Rio Ngumoha sends Arne Slot message he can't ignore as Liverpool wonderkid makes Kop impact
Mark is the Sports Features Editor for Mirror Online. Having started out at the Liverpool Echo he began working for the Mirror in London in 2016 following previous stints working for likes of the Premier League, Bleacher Report and several betting companies. After moving back to Liverpool in 2024 he specialises in Merseyside, Manchester and Welsh football, cricket and knowing for too many useless answers to trivia questions.
Anfield was a little more sparse than usual as Liverpool's first friendly of the evening against Athletic Bilbao kicked off due to an earlier evacuation, but even amongst the reduced numbers there would have been those who didn't know who Rio Ngumoha was. If they got in in time, they do now.
Just 81 seconds were on the clock when Ngumoha, who won't turn 17 until the end of this month, picked up the ball inside his own half and drove at the visiting defenders in much the same way he had against Yokohama F Marinos in Japan last week. Only this was at the Kop end.
A touch of nerves for the teen as he bore down on goal then? Not a bit of it. Ngumoha opened his body up and caressed an effort into the far corner that a player twice his age his would be proud of.
It was yet another example of why Arne Slot can't ignore the talents of the former Chelsea youngster when selecting his first-team squads this season. And you're starting to suspect he won't.
Ngumoha's sole taste of first-team action in the last campaign came in an FA Cup third round tie against Accrington Stanley, but after scoring what is already his third goal of this pre-season then there are many calling for Slot to throw him into the meaningful matches soon and more often.
The Reds have sold Luis Diaz after all, and so there is a vacancy on their left wing, and everyone has to start somewhere. Lamine Yamal recently turned 18 and has 106 games for Barcelona under his belt, and... well we should probably stop there shouldn't we.
But while Liverpool are still determined to treat the young Ngumoha with kid gloves, but he is being treated like a first-team player.
He was interviewed by club media in Japan, and notably now sports his first name on the back of his shirt rather than his surname - clearly something he felt emboldened enough to request.
After his goal to get the Anfield crowd on their feet he was soon turning provider when he nodded down for Darwin Nunez to apply a simple finishing touch. In celebration the name Rio was bellowed down from the Kop and not Darwin.
Ngumoha would remain pivotal to how Liverpool attacked, with his stepovers and rolling of the ball under his feet delighting the crowd until his 66th minute replacement to a standing ovation.
The Reds were 4-0 up by that point thanks to further goals from Ben Doak and Harvey Elliott, eventually winning 4-1, but none of those strikes were as special as the opener nor the player who scored it.

Mohamed Salah left with egg on his face after denying Cody Gakpo hat-trick chance
Liverpool rounded off pre-season with a productive evening against Spanish side Athletic Bilbao but it wasn't all positive for forward Mohamed Salah despite finding the net for Arne Slot's side Mohamed Salah robbed Cody Gakpo the chance of a hat-trick with a woeful penalty at Anfield. The Egyptian forward started in Liverpool 's pre-season clash against Athletic Bilbao on Monday. It was the second time that the Reds had taken on the Spanish side at Anfield. They had already secured a 4-1 win earlier in the day - Rio Ngumoha, Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott all finding the net for Arne Slot 's side. Salah then got Liverpool off to the perfect start in their second match after firing home Hugo Ekitike's cross. Oihan Sancet equalised for Bilbao, only for Gakpo to restore Liverpool's lead. The Dutchman remained at the heart of things after scoring an own goal but he scored once again in the right end to rack up a brace. He then had a golden chance to secure an eye-catching pre-season hat-trick as Liverpool were awarded an 80th-minute penalty. But instead of Gakpo, Salah was the man to step up. While he is usually reliable from the spot, the Egyptian blazed the ball high over the crossbar. Salah could afford himself a wry smile after the miss but will certainly hope to re-find his aim as Liverpool return to action next weekend. The Reds take on FA Cup holders Crystal Palace in the Community Shield at Wembley next weekend before their Premier League opener against Bournemouth in just under a fortnight's time. Gakpo in the meantime will be hoping to continue his hot form. Speaking ahead of his latest appearance, he said: "It was my best return so far [last season] but me as a player and as a person I always strive to do better and do more. 'Hopefully this year is going to be a better one. I am just trying to get more goals and more assists. "It was an ankle injury and it was difficult and I tried to come back as quickly as possible because we had some important games but unfortunately I had a setback again in training and then it took longer to get into the rhythm again and get confidence when you are in duels or shooting on target with the ankle and you are maybe not as confident at that time. "So that was not nice for the rhythm where I was before but this is also a part of football and you have to overcome it, so I think the last games of the season went better for my ankle, I didn't feel it as much before. So I think now we just have to start the season fit and move." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Rio Ferdinand fires warning to Eberechi Eze over Arsenal transfer this summer
Rio Ferdinand has warned Eberechi Eze he may struggle for game time if he joins Arsenal from Crystal Palace in the summer transfer window. Eze has been strongly linked to Arsenal ahead of the new Premier League season and the player is thought to be keen on a switch to north London. Arsenal are reluctant to pay Eze's £68m price tag – but believe they can negotiate a lower fee before the summer window closes on September 1. Eze has established himself as one of the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League, helping Palace land a historic FA Cup trophy last term. The 27-year-old has played a total of 167 games for Palace to date, registering 40 goals and 28 assists for the south London club. In The Mixer: Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every week – click here and sign up before Friday to make sure you don't miss the first edition. While agreeing personal terms with Arsenal is unlikely to be a significant issue, former Manchester United defender Ferdinand, who works as a football pundit, has told the Englishman to think twice about a transfer. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ferdinand said: 'I don't think [Arsenal] need Eze. Why do [Arsenal] need Eze? Where is he going to play? 'You've got Martin Zubimendi as a holding midfielder, Declan Rice on the left-hand side of the No.8, Martin Odegaard on the right-hand side. 'Then you've got a winger – out of Noni Madueke or Gabriel Martinelli… He'd play where Declan Rice plays.' Analysis from Sports Editor James Goldman… It was almost impressive that after spending nearly £200m on new blood that the Gunners looked so distinctly recognisable in their 1-0 pre-season defeat to Tottenham. A lack of invention and reliance on Bukayo Saka, allied to the traditional Gabriel Martinelli off, Leandro Trossard on substitution had fans despairing. It's obvious why Arsenal supporters are crying out for Eberechi Eze. Quizzed if the move made sense for Arsenal, Ferdinand agreed, arguing that Eze's potential arrival would give the Gunners more depth. He also said that Eze could fit in the Arsenal XI if Rice was deployed as the defensive midfielder instead of new signing Martin Zubimendi. 'If Declan Rice played as a holding midfielder, I'd take Eze in a heartbeat,' Ferdinand added. More Trending 'Yeah, he would give [Arsenal] depth. You could move it about. If Declan Rice gets injured, who have you got? Max Dowman.' Arsenal feel Eze's best position is when he operates as a No.10 but also view him as a versatile attacking player who can be deployed on the left. It's also reported that Arsenal are looking to sell a forward before making a formal move for Eze. Meanwhile, it should be noted that Palace chairman Steve Parish has currently shown no indication he would be open to negotiating a lower price for Eze. Will Wright, 17, almost caps dream Liverpool debut with an Anfield goal - just after Reds beat Arsenal to sign the forward from Salford City
New Liverpool signing Will Wright came close to making an instant impression on fans just days after signing for the club. The Premier League champions had officially announced Wright's signing from League Two side Salford City earlier on Tuesday. The Reds had confirmed the forward had already linked up with their U21s squad last week and made his debut for the team on the weekend. Wright was given a 16-minute cameo in the second of Liverpool's pre-season double header against Athletic Club on Monday, with the teenager coming on for Florian Wirtz. The forward nearly marked his first Anfield appearance with a goal just 10 minutes later. Wright skipped past a challenge inside Liverpool's half, before feeding the ball to Federico Chiesa. After sprinting forward to offer Chiesa and option to his left, Wright received the Italian's pass and attempted to bend the ball into the net. The forward was ultimately denied by the Athletic Club goalkeeper's foot, with the ball rebounding to safety. Liverpool had beaten Premier League rivals to the signing of Wright, who made four senior appearances for Salford City last season. Arsenal had agreed a £200,000 fee with Salford two weeks ago with a further £50,000 to follow across the season in achievable add-ons. Talks had been progressing well with his representatives but Liverpool, who had led the initial race for the 17-year-old, came back in at the weekend and matched Arsenal's offer. Leeds United and Rangers also made late enquiries, as did Nottingham Forest, while City, though big admirers, have already committed sizeable funds to other youth signings. Wright ultimately agreed terms on a three-year contract with Liverpool. FA Cup defeat by Manchester City in January.
