Washington Sundar to replace Sai Sudharsan, Karun Nair to be No.3 for India vs England Edgbaston Test

Indian Express18 hours ago
India are expected to replace their new No. 3 Sai Sudharsan with an all-rounder, Washington Sundar, who is expected to bat late down the order. The two other changes that India are looking at are – Nitish Reddy for Shardul Thakur and Akash Deep in place of Jasprit Bumrah, the pacer rested due to workload management.
The inclusion of Washington and Reddy means India, desperate to draw level in the series they are trailing 0-1, will take the field with three all-rounders. The team's most experienced player, Ravindra Jadeja, is the third one. This specialist for all-rounder swap shakes up the Indian top-order in a matter of weeks. With Sai out, the last Test's No.6 Karun Nair jumps to No.3 and Jadeja moves up a place in the ladder.
At Headingley, Sai had started his Test career with a duck, edging an innocuous down-the-leg-side ball into the hands of the wicket-keeper. In the second innings, he got 30 from 48 balls. Though there were reports of Sai nursing a shoulder injury, evident from his weak throw from the outfield, he had sweated it at nets for the last two days. He did the fielding drills, stood with the slip cordon when taking catches and had an extended batting session too.
The decision to leave Sai out is not a verdict on his performance. It has more to do with the team balance, a strategic call by a team that wants an extra spinner but doesn't want to compromise on their batsmen count. But the change does disrupt the Indian batting order. Akash Deep for Bumrah certainly makes India's pace bowling weak, and Sai sitting out for Washington sets off a round of musical chairs in the batting unit.
About the addition of the third all-rounder in the side, skipper Shubman had said, 'If fast bowlers are not creating enough chances) then we feel that maybe a second spinner on these kinds of wickets will at least create a run until the second new ball comes,' he said. 'Looking at the last match, if a similar wicket is going to be here like it was in the last match,) then a second spinner won't be a bad option.'

IND vs ENG: Yashasvi Jaiswal misses out on breaking star Indian cricketer's 26-year-old record by...

Yashasvi Jaiswal. (PIC - X) New Delhi: Indian team's young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has missed out on a big achievement in his Test career. This left-handed batsman had a chance to complete the fastest 2000 Test runs for India in the first innings of the second Test being played against England at Edgbaston. But Yashasvi could not do so by just 10 runs. Whose record could have been broken by Yashasvi Jaiswal? Yashasvi got out after scoring 87 runs. So now he has 1990 runs in 39 innings of Tests. If he had scored 10 more runs, he would have become the fastest Indian to score 2000 runs. By doing this, Yashasvi would have also broken the record of Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag. Sehwag-Dravid had achieved this feat in 40 innings. Now if Yashasvi has done it in 39 innings only. Who are the two players and when did they achieve their record? Rahul Dravid did this feat against New Zealand in Hamilton in 1999 and Virender Sehwag did this feat against Australia in Chennai in 2004. Yashasvi made his Test debut against West Indies in July 2023 at Roseau and has scored 1990 runs in 39 innings so far. His average is 52.86. Who are the fastest Indian batters to score 2000 Test runs? Rahul Dravid – 40 innings (New Zealand, Hamilton, 1999) Virender Sehwag 40 innings (Australia, Chennai, 2001) Vijay Hazare – 43 innings (West Indies, Port of Spain, 1953) Gautam Gambhir – 43 innings (New Zealand, Napier, 2009) Sunil Gavaskar – 44 innings (West Indies, Port of Spain, 1976) How was Yashasvi Jaiswal's performance? Yashasvi had performed brilliantly in the first Test as well and scored 101 runs (159 balls, 16 fours and 1 six) in the first innings. However, in the second innings, he could score only 4 runs and was dismissed by Brydon Curse. However, after contributing in batting, Jaiswal will also have to focus on his fielding. In the Leeds Test, he dropped four easy catches which affected the result of the match.

Shubman Gill's century lights up Edgbaston as India take control on Day 1

Shubman Gill and Ravindra Jadeja. (PIC - X) New Delhi: Shubman Gill smashed his second consecutive century as captain in England, with which India has scored 310 runs for five wickets till stumps against England on the first day of the second Test on Wednesday. Shubman Gill (scoring 114 runs off 216 balls) and Ravindra Jadeja (scoring 41 runs off 67 balls) are present at the crease till the end of the game. There has been an unbeaten partnership of 99 runs between the two batsmen. Without Kuldeep Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah, the Indian team, which came out with three all-rounders in the final eleven, performed balanced in batting, like Leeds, the pitch of Edgbaston is also helpful for the batsmen and in the absence of Bumrah, India will have to score at least 500 runs. Rishabh Pant, who scored a century in both innings in the first Test, scored 25 runs in 42 balls while Nitish Kumar Reddy, who was selected in place of Shardul Thakur, could score only one run. Both these batsmen were out in the last session. Pant was caught by Jack Crowley at long on off Bashir, while Reddy was bowled by Chris Woakes. Who missed the century on day 1? Earlier, Yashasvi Jaiswal missed out on a century. In the second session, Stokes got Jaiswal caught by Jamie Smith behind the wicket on a short and wide ball, Jaiswal scored 87 runs in 107 balls with the help of 13 fours. India scored 84 runs in the second session after losing the wicket of Jaiswal in 28 overs. Gill narrowly escaped a strong appeal for LBW on the ball of Brydon Carse in the 34th over, he hit a four on extra cover to England's only spinner Bashir while Pant hit him for a six over mid-on. What made Team India sad? In the first hour of the morning, KL Rahul (2 runs in 26 balls) was dismissed cheaply by Chris Woakes. Just before lunch, Kars gave India the second blow by getting Karun Nair (31 runs) caught by Harry Brook at second slip. In the first hour, the ball did not swing much but got a lot of seam, Kars tried to bowl the ball on the chest of Jaiswal but this young batsman faced it well. He started by hitting some good cover drives to Kars, he also played great pool shots to Stokes, Nair, who was sent up in the batting order, was also bowled many full length balls by England's fast bowlers but he gave a befitting reply by hitting fours in cover and straight. What changes did Team India make? India has rested Jasprit Bumrah in this match. Washington Sundar is playing in place of Sai Sudarshan and Nitish Kumar Reddy is playing in place of Shardul Thakur. Fast bowler Akash Deep has also got a place while wrist spinner Kuldeep is out again. After failing to take 20 wickets in the first match, questions are being raised on the decision to keep Kuldeep out of the team.
