Memorial Day travel rush brings delays and crowds at DFW Airport

CBS News25-05-2025
EDITOR'S NOTE: More than 3.7 million Texans are expected to travel over the Memorial Day weekend, a 3% increase from last year and the third consecutive year of record-breaking travel in the state, according to AAA.

On Saturday, hundreds of passengers at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport experienced delays.
Airport officials said storms in some areas contributed to the disruptions.

"It was slightly delayed. It was a plane that arrived a little bit late, so about 30, 40 minutes," passenger Kara Boydston said.
"It was delayed. They said they had mechanical issues," Holly Iglesias said.
As of Saturday evening, FlightAware reported more than 400 delays at DFW.
"With travel, you have to be fluid," Iglesias said. "So you know, is it surprising? You'd hope not, but they do what they can."
Passengers also dealt with heavy crowds.
DFW airport officials said they expect 1.4 million travelers from Thursday through Tuesday.
"Yeah, it's a lot of people, but you know this is a major international hub," Iglesias said.
"I was stunned when I walked into the Phoenix airport this morning. I fly in and out of there several times a year, and the place was jam-packed," traveler Wayne Dobbs said.
American Airlines said it is operating more than 5,000 flights from DFW over the holiday weekend.
"In fact, we are operating nearly 900 flights a day out of DFW airport this weekend," said Jame Moses, senior vice president of DFW operations for American Airlines.
The airline said it is testing new technology to help passengers with connecting flights.
"Through technology, we are able to identify those flights, suggest a slight hold, and allow those customers to connect onto the departure so we get them to their final destination," Moses said.
With Memorial Day weekend marking the start of the summer travel season, American Airlines said it will offer more flights than ever before.
"In fact, 12% more seats than we offered pre-pandemic out of DFW," Moses said.
Between May and September, the airline will operate close to 100,000 flights from DFW.

Hurricane Erin brings strong rip currents and huge waves to Massachusetts beaches

As Hurricane Erin moves up the east coast, the storm is bringing huge waves and strong rip currents to Horseneck Beach in Westport, Massachusetts. "Seeing very rough waves and seeing that, we're not allowed in the water," said beachgoer Debbie Pimento, who was watching the waves at the beach. A double red flag warning has been issued at Horseneck, which means the water is closed for swimming and surfing. Lifeguards are also posted along the beach to keep beachgoers from trying to go in. "A lot of waves," said Pimento. "I'm afraid that there's maybe going to be some surfers that go out there but it doesn't look like they're even allowed. I didn't think there was going to be anybody on the beach today." Liz Hanson is a regular at Horseneck and said she's never seen waves this big. "Yesterday there were folks with boogie boards enjoying the slightly higher surf but they're doing a good job letting us know with the double red flags this isn't a safe condition," said Hanson. Horseneck Beach closed at 6 p.m. Wednesday due to high rip currents and a high surf advisory remains in effect until Saturday morning. The National Weather Service is warning of dangerous conditions and localized beach erosion. Hanson said she and her family could feel the conditions getting more and more powerful over the last few days. "We got our feet wet two days ago," said Hanson, referring to her and her baby. "But even yesterday, he was sort of feeling the pullback and we were saying too much probably, but definitely not this."

American Airlines Called Out After Embarrassing Mistake

It's not uncommon for an airline to promote international flights with photos or iconic imagery from the destination, like the Eiffel Tower for a flight to Paris, the Colosseum for a flight to Rome. However, some basic fact-checking should probably be done first. This week, American Airlines used some beautiful imagery of a castle to promote its new flight to Prague in the Czech Republic. The only problem is that the castle the airline used in its advertising is actually located nowhere near Prague. American Airlines Launches New Flight to Prague Earlier this month, American Airlines officially announced a new flight from Philadelphia to Prague, along with a new flight to Budapest, Hungary. 'Customers continue to tell us that Europe is where they want to go each summer and these new routes make it even easier to cross the Atlantic in 2026," American's Senior Vice President of Network and Schedule Planning said in a statement earlier this month. 'We are excited to grow our network to new destinations like Prague and Budapest and offer even more premium travel experiences on our flights to Tokyo.' The new flight will begin in May of 2026, but the airline has already begun advertising the new flight. American Airlines Begins Advertising Prague Flights After American Airlines announced the new flight to Prague, it immediately began advertising the route across multiple channels, including a full database e-mail blast, which was captured in a screenshot by Gary Leff of View From the Wing. "Vacation in Prague: Wander through Prague's timeless beauty with castles, cafés and cobblestone streets," the advertisement reads. Those words accompanied a photograph of Český Krumlov Castle, which is undeniably beautiful. However, it isn't in Prague, as the language suggests. In fact, it isn't even particularly close to Prague. An Embarrassing Mistake As Leff pointed out, the castle is actually located in the South Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. "American's marketing of 'Prague's timeless beauty' and Prague's 'castles and cobblestone streets' do not show either. Instead, that's Český Krumlov Castle complex overlooking the Vltava River, with the town's historic center and signature red-tiled rooftops," Leff wrote for View From the Wing. Further, Leff pointed out that the ad makes even less sense, considering Prague isn't even the closest or most convenient airport to the castle, and American already operated a flight to a city that is just as close to the castle as Prague. "Prague isn't even the closest airport to Český Krumlov, since Linz (with good air connections via Frankfurt, train from Vienna, and plenty of low cost carrier service especially seasonally) is much closer. (Salzburg is just as straightforward a journey though it's a few kilometers farther away. Munich is about half an hour farther away – American already offered equally convenient service to Český Krumlov!)," Leff wrote. More than that, there is a castle in Prague that would have made much more sense for American Airlines to use in its marketing. "If American wanted an image of a castle for their Prague service, then maybe use… Prague Castle? That's the most the most significant Czech monument. It's one of the city's main landmarks, visible from much of central Prague, and the office of the President of the Czech Republic. And it's actually in Prague!" Leff wrote. Clearly, Southwest should have verified the location of the castle in the marketing before rolling it out. This Stunning Beach Was Named No. 1 in the U.S. for 2025—and It Has Massive Dunes and White Quartz Sand

Coopers Beach in Southampton takes the top spot in Dr. Beach's 2025 rankings, praised for its soft sand, sweeping dunes, and luxe appeal. When it comes to beaches, Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman is a certified expert. The scientist, author, professor, and director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University also goes by the nickname Dr. Beach. For more than 30 years, he's been using his expertise in all things beaches to evaluate and rate coastal areas around the world—and each year, he releases his ranking of America's Best Beaches. Using his 50-criterion system—which takes into account things like sand softness, number of sunny days, rip currents, and water color—Dr. Beach determined that Coopers Beach in Southampton, New York, earned the top spot. Just a 2.5-hour drive from Manhattan, depending on traffic, the Long Island destination surpassed its previous No. 2 position, which it took in 2024. In his explanation for why Coopers Beach ranked so highly this year, Dr. Beach credited its location, white sand, towering dunes, and access via public transportation. 'Coopers Beach is… shielded from the cold Labrador currents in the beautiful village of Southampton. Coopers Beach is hundreds of yards wide, made of grainy white quartz sand,' he stated. 'The beach is backed by large sand dunes covered by American beach grass interspersed with extravagant mansions.' He also added that while 'parking is expensive,' visitors have the option to ride free with Circuit. The electric public cart transports between six and eight people at a time from Southampton to Coopers Beach. Of course, summer is primetime on Coopers Beach, but early fall is equally appealing, especially if you prefer a beach without crowds. 'The best time of the year to visit is in September when the summer tourists are gone, and the ocean water is still warm,' Dr. Beach shared. To really up the ante on a relaxing getaway to Coopers Beach and Southampton, book a room at Shou Sugi Ban House in nearby Water Mill—just give yourself plenty of time to enjoy both the wellness retreat and the beach. Before you head to the beach, pop into Southampton for some good old-fashioned Hamptons shopping, dining, and celebrity spotting. Grabbing coffee at The Golden Pear is a must, and it doesn't hurt to stock up on sweets from The Fudge Company and to-go sandwiches from Cheese Shoppe. If you're feeling extra festive, the Southampton outpost of Sant Ambroeus should hit the mark with its pastries and gelato. During your Hamptons vacation, you may also want to stop by another Dr. Beach-favorite. Main Beach in East Hampton came in at No. 5 in his ratings, thanks to its 'beautiful, clean, and clear blue water.' Read the original article on Travel & Leisure Solve the daily Crossword
