Lotus Evija Breaks Records in Autocar Test, Becomes Fastest Car Ever Benchmarked
The Lotus Evija has officially rewritten the performance playbook. In a landmark road test conducted by Autocar, one of the most respected names in automotive journalism, the all-electric hypercar not only lived up to the hype — it surpassed it, shattering multiple long-standing records and becoming the fastest car ever tested in the publication's 96-year history.
Autocar's comprehensive road test program, which dates back to 1928, is known for its rigorous and consistent benchmarks. During testing, the Evija delivered unprecedented results: a 0–200 mph time of just 13.0 seconds and a standing quarter-mile of 9.5 seconds at 171.6 mph. Even more astonishing was the standing kilometer time of 16.2 seconds, where the Evija reached its top-speed limiter of 217.4 mph — a full second quicker than its nearest rival, the Lamborghini Revuelto.
The Evija's domination extended beyond traditional sprints. In mid-range acceleration — often the true test of hypercar power — the Evija left all challengers behind. It completed the 100–150 mph run in just 2.7 seconds, three seconds faster than any previous Autocar-tested vehicle. From 150–200 mph, the Lotus was five seconds faster than the next-best performer.
Only two other street-legal cars — the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport and the McLaren F1 — have ever breached the 200 mph mark in Autocar's evaluations. The Evija joins this elite group while eclipsing their figures in nearly every metric.

Rathi hits back at claims FCA redress plan is unworkable
FCA chief executive Nikhil Rathi has pushed back against claims from the motor finance industry that the regulator's proposed redress scheme for discretionary commissions is too difficult to implement, saying lenders must stop 'haggling' and focus on delivering fair outcomes for consumers. Speaking to the Financial Times, Rathi directly addressed industry complaints that the Financial Conduct Authority's plans to compensate customers for car loans dating back as far as 2007 were 'completely impractical' due to patchy record-keeping. 'Now is not the time to haggle with us, but to help put things right for consumers,' he said. 'We know it is difficult. But you can't say the law has been broken and it is too difficult to even try to put things right.' His comments follow the FCA's announcement of a six-week consultation on an industry-wide compensation scheme, which could result in payouts totalling between £9 billion and £18 billion. The scheme is intended to address cases where customers were unfairly charged higher interest rates due to discretionary commission arrangements (DCAs) — a practice banned by the FCA in 2021 but widely used prior to that. The proposal has prompted concern within the motor finance sector, particularly around how firms will access loan and commission records from as far back as 2007. Stephen Haddrill, director general of the Finance & Leasing Association (FLA), warned earlier in a statement: 'We have concerns about whether it is possible to have a fair redress scheme that goes back to 2007, when firms have not been required to hold such dated information, and the evidence base will be patchy at best.' Legal risk contained, operational risk rises The FCA's move comes on the heels of a Supreme Court judgment on three test cases — Johnson v FirstRand Bank, Wrench v FirstRand Bank, and Hopcraft v Close Brothers. The ruling narrowed the legal basis for many claims by confirming that car dealers did not owe fiduciary duties to customers. However, it upheld findings of unfair treatment in cases where commission payments significantly inflated interest charges and were poorly disclosed. The judgment gave the motor finance sector some legal relief, as it removed the risk of a broader wave of litigation. Shares in lenders such as Lloyds, Close Brothers, and Bank of Ireland rose following the ruling. But the court's backing for the FCA's interpretation of 'unfair relationships' has left the door open to regulatory-led redress, which Rathi is now urging firms to support. 'If industry works with us, then we can get this moving quickly,' Rathi said. 'If, however, people want to continue to litigate this and have cases going through the courts for many, many more years, then of course it is going to take longer.' Redress path unclear and costly The FCA has yet to decide whether the redress scheme will be 'opt-in' — requiring customers to apply for compensation — or 'opt-out,' in which lenders proactively repay customers unless they decline. 'An opt-out scheme might take longer because firms have to go and look for all the addresses and track down customers who may have moved,' Rathi said. 'An opt-in scheme may be quicker, but will be less comprehensive.' The regulator estimates most compensation payouts will be under £950 per agreement, but the overall burden for banks and car finance providers could be significant. Fitch Ratings has estimated that lenders may be on the hook for £5 billion to £11 billion, depending on the final scope of the scheme. The remainder would likely fall to non-bank and captive auto finance firms. These real-world operations have generated a proprietary dataset that fuels PlusAI's technology development. Leveraging this data and advanced generative AI models, PlusAI has built a generalizable "driving intelligence" platform using auto-labeling, model distillation, and highly optimized in-vehicle neural networks. Key Performance Indicators for Commercial Launch The KPIs just announced are Safety Case Readiness (SCR), Autonomous Miles Percentage (AMP), and Remote Assistance Free Trips (RAFT). Remote Assistance Free Trips PlusAI's Remote Assistance Free Trips (RAFT) measure captures the percentage of autonomous trips completed without any intervention from a remote operator or an onboard safety driver on a specified commercial route. A trip is considered RAFT-compliant if SuperDrive maintains full control from departure to arrival—without any human assistance to control the vehicle. PlusAI notes that, while remote assistance will always be available if needed, this metric highlights SuperDrive's operational independence, technical maturity, and readiness for scaled deployment. Looking at the set of charts, in the first half of 2025, PlusAI achieved significant advancements in autonomous performance metrics, reaching 86% Safety Case Readiness (SCR), 98% Autonomous Miles Percentage (AMP), and 76% Remote Assistance Free Trips (RAFT), up from 75%, 97%, and 69% respectively in the second half of 2024. Commercial Launch Threshold For commercial launch, PlusAI is targeting 100% Safety Case Readiness, and more than 90% Remote Assistance-Free Trips. The company says that achieving these milestones will demonstrate that SuperDrive has the safety, performance, and operational efficiency required for real-world commercial deployment, enabling trucking fleet operators to complete entire routes without human intervention. PlusAI is currently conducting public road testing in Texas and Sweden with customer fleet trials scheduled for fall of 2025. Per the press release, PlusAI is demonstrating steady progress toward commercial launch of factory-built autonomous trucks in 2027. Initial launch is expected to be in the Texas Triangle, later expanding to other freight corridors in the U.S. and Europe. Last week, Aurora Innovation announced they have expanded their operational design domain to include nighttime operations. Aurora is running driverless trucks in Arizona and Texas. The company said they are close to also accommodating operations in heavy rain. For scaling up, Aurora has go-to-market partnerships with PACCAR and Volvo Group. Another autonomous truck developer, Kodiak Robotics plans to go public via a SPAC sometime during the second half of 2025. The company provides commercial driverless trucking in an off-road setting. Autonomous truck developers Bot Auto and Waabi have announced plans to begin commercial driverless operations later this year. While autonomous trucks are generally allowed in the U.S. due to the lack of any specific vehicle regulations, the full rollout will be accelerated by effective federal regulations. The Autonomous Vehicles Industry Association (AVIA) has been advocating this for some time. Now the political winds are blowing favorably. Last month, California Congressman Vince Fong introduced the AMERICA DRIVES Act, an acronym for 'Autonomous Mobility Ensuring Regulation, Innovation, Commerce, and Advancement Driving Reliability in Vehicle Efficiency and Safety' Act. Industry appears to be in support of the provisions in the Act. Legacy truck OEMs own the supply chain, the factories, the support network, and the customer relationships. Thus, OEMs are critical to commercialization when it comes to scaling truck autonomy. For AV truck players who don't have such a partnership, the road ahead is challenging. All in all, the tech is working 'in the wild' and steadily getting better. In the wilds of Congress, we're seeing the most momentum yet in setting a Federal Safety Framework for truck autonomy. Driverless trucking is showing promise. Across multiple players, the truck autonomy space is moving steadily into the commercialization phase. Max Verstappen Says FWD Is 'The Worst Thing Ever,' 'Like Anti-Driving'
The latest car news, reviews, and features. Ford Performance published an absolute banger of a video the other day. It's almost 40 minutes of Chris Harris (one of the best car-video hosts working) buzzing around with Max Verstappen (one of the best drivers racing) in some legendary vehicles, nerding out about setups and driving styles. As an aside, Harris asks the Dutch F1 champ how he feels about front-wheel drive, and Verstappen offered a comically candid response. While cruising around the countryside in an RS200, Harris brought up Verstappen's spectacular save at the 2016 Brazilian Grand Prix, where the Dutchman heroically managed to pull his race car out of a spin in wet conditions. If you haven't seen that, it's an unbelievable illustration of calm under pressure: 'Honestly, that one was like 50/50, 50 luck and 50 skills,' Verstappen recalled, then went on to explain his maneuver. '…as soon as I felt it [traction] was coming back, I knew that just before the barrier, if you release the brakes, then you get the rolling speed of the tire, and you have a bit more—' 'It almost drags you forwards, like front-wheel drive,' Harris said, completing the thought. Then, seeing an opportunity for a fun question, Harris quickly asked: 'Do you like front-wheel drive?' Verstappen wasted no seconds answering: 'No.' 'No, I think it's really boring,' he elaborated, which is kind of funny since it wasn't that long ago when he was showing off the Honda Civic Type R. Harris egged him on a little, saying: 'We call it wrong-wheel drive.' Verstappen went on to say, 'For me, it's just like, anti-driving, you know? … I drove it sometimes on the simulator as well. For me, it's like the worst thing ever.' Harris snuck in a little more context for us viewers to close the loop: 'Also, what you're asking of the tire, seems a huge burden. It has to steer, and, put the power down.' That led into an even more interesting discussion of racing style, with Verstappen saying FWD cars need to be driven 'V-style,' which, in simple terms, partially means you need your car to be as straight as possible when you exit a corner. This exchange takes place around the 14:30 mark of this Ford Performance video, but I strongly recommend you bookmark it and come back when you have time to watch the whole thing. The front-wheel-drive comment made a funny hook for this blog, but I will admit it's an undersell of what this whole video is: Two driving legends given free rein to nerd out on what they love about going fast and using cars. Don't get too discouraged by the Flying Dutchman's comments if you're a front-drive fan. Most of us could probably do 1,000 laps around the Nürburgring in a Civic Type R and never get close to the level Verstappen's pushing—just because something doesn't work for his driving style doesn't make it 'wrong.'
