'Liquid gold' ingredients recommended by ITV's Dr Hilary Jones 'boosts immune system'

'Liquid gold' ingredients recommended by ITV's Dr Hilary Jones 'boosts immune system'

Honey has long been celebrated for its health benefits, aiding immune systems and treating various ailments including sore throats. It's a traditional remedy that remains popular even in the era of modern medicine. However, not all honey is created equal.
One type of honey that has been dubbed 'liquid gold' by many over the years is Manuka honey. Sourced from the nectar of New Zealand's native Manuka bush, it boasts a high concentration of methylglyoxal (MGO), known for its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Yet, finding genuine Manuka honey can be challenging.
A brand called Manuka Doctor offers several authentic Manuka honey products on its website. Currently, there's a 100MGO dual pack available for £8.50, was £54, marking an 84% discount, and a three-pack offer priced at £12.50, down from £81, reports the Mirror. Television GP Dr Hilary has endorsed the benefits of Manuka honey.
He said: "Manuka honey contains special ingredients including methylglyoxal, or MGO for short. This value indicates the strength of Manuka honey's health benefits. The higher the MGO content, the more valuable it is for us and the higher the price."
As the largest independent Manuka company from New Zealand, Manuka Doctor is supported by numerous medical professionals and nutritionists, including ITV's Dr Hilary Jones. The honey is harvested and packed in New Zealand and undergoes independent lab testing, ensuring customers receive authentic products. The honey also complies with the stringent export laws of the New Zealand Government, and customers can trace a specific batch of honey right back to the beehives where it was produced.
Depending on what customers purchase from the brand, they can acquire jars of Manuka Honey ranging from 30 MGO to a limited edition 1300 MGO. Taking a spoonful of this honey has several benefits, including aiding with colds and coughs, supporting digestion, and providing a natural energy boost.
Whilst some brands may not always sell genuine Manuka honey, there are trusted alternatives. LookFantastic, for instance, offers Manuka Health MGO 400+ Pure Monofloral Manuka Honey at £63.99. It has a rich and robust blend with no less than 400mg/kg of methylglyoxal, sourced directly from New Zealand. Alternatively, Nisbets features the Rowse Manuka Honey 100+ MGO 225g for £11.99, known for its uniquely sweet, full-bodied and herbal flavour.
On the honey's benefits Dr Hilary Jones continued: "Consuming at least ten grams of honey daily is extremely beneficial from a nutritional and medical perspective and is therefore recommended. Twenty grams daily can also be helpful for boosting the immune system. Long-term daily consumption of high-quality Manuka honey is essential."
Over time, it has become clear that honey - particularly Manuka honey - is one of the most frequently counterfeited foods globally. Instead of genuine honey, it appears that people are being sold fake honey heavily diluted with cheap sugar syrup, as revealed by an EU inspection report in 2023 (titled From The Hives) which found that nearly half of the tested honey was not pure. The report discovered that out of the 320 samples tested, 46 percent were not pure honey.
Moreover, DNA analysis commissioned by the Beekeepers' Association at the end of 2024 showed that 24 out of 25 jars of honey from major UK retailers were suspicious, falling short of the bees knees. Conversely, customers have been raving about their experiences with Doctor Manuka. One customer named Bruce, who had been duped by counterfeit products in the past, detailed his experience.
He said: "The honeys are certified, so you can be sure they're genuine. The difference compared to the other products was very significant: After just a few days, I felt much more energetic, focused, and positive."
Similarly, another commented on Manuka Doctor's 70 MGO Manuka Honey, saying: "I am a New Zealander who grew up with Manuka honey before it was marketed for its well being qualities. As such I am very taste sensitive when it comes to honey. . . and this is a good one! I was shopping around to see if I could find a cheaper and equally good alternative to my normal brand and happily came across Manuka Doctor. I am super impressed by the quality, taste and sale prices which have made this honey really great value. Tried the 40 55 and 70 - all really great value."
However, opinions were divided, with one customer commenting: "It was too strong for me."
Another shopper said: "Lovely honey, very soothing on the stomach. Bought in sale so the price was a bargain. More balanced than sugar, very nice added to hot water and fresh lemon juice. Help with recovery of my sore throat."

'Michael Mosley's death changed my life - I'm free from pain explosions'

The shock death of Michael Mosley, whose legacy lives on through his transformative healthy eating advice, was the push Lorraine Kerr needed to finally change her bad habits The tragic news of Michael Mosley 's death this time last year forced Lorraine Kerr to put change into action. She had always been a fan of the TV doctor and heard about his popular diet plan two years ago, but was stuck in a rut of emotional eating. It was in June 2024 when the 55-year-old returned home from Greek-island hopping that sparked the start of a new journey of health and fitness. She too had been holidaying in Symi, the very same picturesque island where Dr Mosley had been staying and subsequently died. The health guru, known for popularising the 5:2 diet, was found dead in a rocky area of Agia Marina on June 5. He had said goodbye to his wife, Clare Bailey, at the beach before going alone on a two-mile walk, having left his phone at the hotel. Michael, 67, had taken a wrong turn and became lost. Police said he died of natural causes, and an inquest last December concluded his death was "most likely attributable either to heat stroke (accidental) or non-identified pathological cause". The shock news made Lorraine, who weighed 14-and-a-half stone and is now more than six stone lighter, want to honour the medic's lasting legacy. "I first heard about The Fast 800 by listening to Dr Michael Mosley 's podcast about two years ago," she told the Mirror. "I'd already put on a lot of weight and thought the plan would be a sustainable option for me, but at that point I wasn't ready to do anything. I've always been an emotional eater, and after losing both my mother and sister in a very short space of time, I found myself turning to sugary foods. It took a toll on my health and my GP said it had put me on the path to pre-diabetes." She added: "When the news broke about what had happened to him, it kind of galvanised me to stop dithering…and in a way I felt like I wanted to honour him and all the work he and his team had done." She began with The Very Fast 800 – the programme's most rapid weight loss approach, which involves up to 12 weeks of eating two to three Mediterranean-style meals each day, totalling approximately 800 - 900 calories per day. In those first 12 weeks, she dropped to 12 stone 5lbs. Today, she is just 6lbs away from her goal weight of 8 stone 4lbs. Much of that weight loss, says Lorraine, is the result of a complete change in her eating habits. A typical day of eating might have been an extra-large Danish pastry from a bakery at the end of her road, lots of coffee with cream and artificial sweeteners, a steak pie and a packet of crisps for lunch, plus several chocolate bar snacks or biscuits throughout the day and more coffee. Dinner was likely to be pizza or spaghetti bolognese – albeit homemade, as both Lorraine and her husband Nick enjoy cooking. However the new diet inspired Lorraine to embrace a lot more vegetables, particularly greens that she doesn't particularly enjoy. 'I found the first 12 weeks difficult at first," she said. "I was very hungry but absolutely determined and I knew there was an end to the very low calorie restriction. The galvanisation really helped me to get through it. 'I always loved the kale recipes, in particular the Harissa Greens and Halloumi, which featured largely during my 12 weeks and since. I didn't think I'd enjoy it, but I absolutely love it." Typical meals for Lorraine now that she has moved onto The Fast 800's maintenance approach - The Way of Life - include baked oats, pears and walnuts for breakfast, plenty of Greek yogurt, different kinds of salad for lunch, and healthier evening meals that might include oily fish, meatballs or even vegetarian selections. If she's on the go, she'll make use of pre-prepared meals such as The Fast 800 Dark Chocolate and Raspberry Protein Bars. Perhaps the biggest motivation for embracing her new lifestyle permanently is the huge improvement in IBS symptoms. 'The amazing thing was that within three days of starting the programme, my irritable bowel syndrome, which I'd suffered from for a couple of years, had vanished, and it's never returned.' Lorraine now believes her problems were as a result of consuming too many artificial sweeteners. 'This isn't scientific, but as a test I reintroduced some artificial sweeteners and within two to three days the symptoms came back and were quite severe. "When I stopped eating the sweeteners, the symptoms vanished again. I tried the same thing one more time to check and the symptoms returned straightaway and disappeared again as soon as I stopped…I've not had one day of IBS since I stopped eating artificial sweeteners after reintroducing them briefly." Lorraine, who takes the Pre + Probiotic supplement, has also seen other health improvements. Her fibromyalgia - long-term condition that involves widespread body pain - symptoms have improved along with back problems caused by Coccydynia – permanent inflammation of the coccyx. 'I used to get explosions of pain; sometimes so horrific I needed morphine. I haven't had one since around the six month mark, so my weight loss has really helped with that too.' Alongside her healthier eating, Lorraine also began regular exercise. She started slowly, five days a week with resistance training, HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training, which comprises fast-paced exercise in short bursts) and Pilates. 'My fitness was very poor and I was struggling to walk anywhere because of my weight. "I'm only 5ft and 1.5 inches with a very slight frame, so that was a lot of weight to be carrying around on a small person. It was really hard going just to do the basic level, but I lost quite a bit of weight in those first two weeks, which gave me the psychological push and my sleep improved too.' She now swims in the sea regularly and finds the 15 minute walk to and from the beach – including a steep hill on the way home, easy. 'I'm walking really quickly now. My body feels clearer and brighter. There are so many benefits,' she says. Lorraine is now adamant that the dramatic changes both to her body shape and health are not something she wants to reverse. 'It's had a massive impact on my wellbeing and health, so I'm really looking to make this a way of life because the changes have been so good. That's the whole point, isn't it?!' "I will be sailing past Symi at the end of next week so will give a silent nod to Dr Mosley and his lovely family - I can say I did it, I feel great, thank you."

Major health update on tourist, 22, whose legs were torn off by boat propeller

Hannah Smith, 22, remains in hospital with her devastated family by her side as she continues to recover from a tragic accident in the Bahamas which saw her lose both her legs A university graduate who was sucked into a boat 's propeller and had both her legs torn off has undergone more than a dozen surgeries, her heartbroken sister has revealed. Hannah Smith, 22, was on a dream trip to the Bahamas last month as she celebrated graduating with top honours for her arts degree at Miles College, Alabama when tragedy struck. According to the young woman's family, Hannah fell from the side of a pontoon boat as it was docking and was suddenly dragged beneath the water by its propeller, leaving her with catastrophic injuries and partially severed legs. ‌ Two female passengers managed to grab her arm and pull her back on board and she was airlifted to the US for surgery. The family set up a GoFundMe page to cover the mounting medical bills and in the latest update, Rachel Smith revealed her sister is still "fighting". ‌ "Your continued prayers and support are very much needed and appreciated," the update reads. "Hannah has undergone her 13th surgery with more to come. This journey is taking a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual toll. Please keep her lifted in your thoughts and prayers. She is fighting!!! Thank you for all the love and support." Hannah's parents Tracy and Marvin Smith, as well as sister Rachel, have travelled from their home in Tennessee to be by her bedside in a Miami hospital. In another update, Rachel said her sister is "progressing slowly". "Hannah underwent her sixth surgery Monday May 20, 2025. This was one of her less extensive procedures," it read. "Doctors more so used this time for debridement, examination, and determining a plan of action. She is progressing slowly but surely day by day. Her strength and ability to overcome every obstacle in her journey is beautiful!" Another update, posted on May 17, reads: "Hannah suffered a few setbacks. She had to undergo additional transfusions of blood, platelets, and dialysis. Before she was taken into her scheduled surgery, she momentarily came out of her sedation. She was able to acknowledge our presence and encouraging words with head nods and squeezing our hands. She has underwent her fifth surgery. Please continue to keep her in your thoughts and prayers." Just a week after the tragedy, Hannah's devastated parents told the Mirror their daughter was a Crossfit-loving athlete who was a keen cheerleader, footballer and track runner. "She's still in intensive care, but she's conscious when she's not in surgery," Marvin told the Mirror. "She definitely knows we're there supporting her. It means the world to her, she was so happy when she regained consciousness that we were all here." "We're trying to keep her spirits up," added emotional mum Tracy. "She's in a lot of pain. We're trying to practise techniques to distract her from it. Encourage her and just try to keep her pushing forward." The Royal Bahamas Police said an investigation into the freak accident was ongoing, adding in a statement: "The victim is alleged to have entered the water from a vessel she was a passenger on while it was attempting to dock. She sustained serious injuries to her lower body, caused by the vessel's propeller."
