Day after review, cable fault snaps power supply for 8 hours in Noida condo

Time of India16-05-2025
Noida: A fault in an underground cable led to outages and
voltage fluctuation
for around eight hours in Sector 53, starting just after midnight on Thursday. The snag comes less than a day after PVVNL MD Isha Duhan held a meeting with FONRWA members as well as representatives of the Noida Entrepreneurs Association (NEA) late Wednesday evening to address power-related issues in the city.
According to residents, delays in identifying the fault that led to the outage prolonged the issue. Voltage fluctuations and frequent tripping further exacerbated the issue. The B block of the sector faced a power-cut around 12.30am on Thursday. Calls were made to the SDO and the lineman of the area and a check of the transformer was conducted not long after, but the problem persisted.
"Around 1.50am, linemen reached the spot and fixed the supply.
However, the relief was brief as a low tension (LT) cable, which goes from the transformer to the corner of B-81, was in bad shape. The linemen said that the cable needed to be replaced immediately as it had deteriorated. Officials assured us this would be done by Thursday," said VS Negi, RWA general secretary of Sector 53.
Residents said that power issues were experienced till around 8am on Thursday, and voltage fluctuations continued on into the afternoon.

Mere hours before the outage, late on Wednesday evening, representatives of 60 RWAs as well as a delegation of NEA met with the PVVNL MD at the FONRWA office. At the meeting, residents informed power officials that transformers, cable lines, feeder junction/panel boxes, meter box, etc in most sectors were in a dilapidated condition. Issues such as pruning of trees and overloaded transformers causing outages were also discussed.
According to FONRWA secretary general KK Jain, work done by the power department in residential sectors was undertaken without consulting the RWAs who can provide better suggestions for the power upkeep. "There's a need for an SDO level meeting with residents monthly which will help resolve small problems timely," Jain added.
In response, Duhan ordered all SDOs and other officials of the power department to hold such meetings henceforth and inform RWAs about the work being done in the sectors.
She also reviewed work done so far in infra upgrade and under the Central govt's RDSS modernisation scheme.
Meanwhile, the NEA raised an objection to the power department converting M/s Montana Impex Pvt Ltd, B-47, Sector 59, from an industry to a commercial unit and imposing penalties of over Rs 4.6 crore on it. They also said that the power department takes about 1-2 months to issue no-objection certificates (NOCs) for new units and demanded a fixed time period for it.
"A time period should be fixed to grant NOCs and other matters so that entrepreneurs do not have to face delays and unnecessary problems," said Harish Joneja, senior vice president, NEA.
Duhan directed officials to resolve the entrepreneurs' problems and also said that basic facilities are being addressed to provide better power supply to the industries.

Mullanpur, Zirakpur residents endure 12-hr power cuts

Mohali: Residents of Mullanpur and Zirakpur faced prolonged power outages this week, with many housing societies going without electricity for up to 12–14 hours. The outages not only caused discomfort but also forced residents in several gated communities to bear steep generator charges ranging from Rs 20 to Rs 28 per unit. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now In Mullanpur, the blackout on Tuesday lasted around 12 hours. Manish, a resident of one of the societies, said, "We had no power for the whole day, and the promoter ran generators which cost us Rs 28 per unit for using air-conditioners." Mullanpur executive engineer Taranjit Singh attributed the outage to a fault in the underground power cable. "We replaced two kilometres of cable, which took nearly 12 hours. The work was also delayed due to rain," he said, adding that the disruption was unrelated to the ongoing power workers' strike. "PSPCL has adequate manpower to address complaints promptly," he asserted. Zirakpur also experienced widespread outages. Many societies, including Jaipuria Greens and Maya Garden on VIP Road, remained without power from Monday into Tuesday for up to 14 hours. In Lohgarh, electricity went off at around 4:30 pm on Wednesday and was restored around 7 pm. Residents complained that such cuts have become routine in the township. "Power interruptions happen regularly here, and there's little long-term solution in sight," one resident remarked. While PSPCL officials maintain that the Mullanpur disruption was purely a technical snag, the recurring outages in both towns have left residents frustrated, especially during peak summer heat.
