Young horse dies during Royal Ascot as TV presenter reveals heartbreaking news during live coverage
Harry's Girl opened her lungs on her debut at Newmarket in April, before finishing fifth at York in May, but sadly could not make it round the bend in the Queen Mary Stakes
The second day of Royal Ascot began on a sombre note with the untimely passing of Harry's Girl.
This was only the third outing for the filly, who had secured a victory at her first race in Newmarket during April, followed by a run at York in May.
Tragically, under the care of trainer Richard Hannon and jockey Sean Levey, she sustained an injury early into the five-furlong contest.
Ascot Racecourse released a statement lamenting the loss: "Unfortunately, Harry's Girl suffered a fatal injury during The Queen Mary Stakes," they said. "Our thoughts go out to all connections at this time."
During ITV Racing's live coverage of the event, presenter Ed Chamberlain conveyed the heartbreaking update, acknowledging that the incident 'cast a shadow' over True Love's win.
He announced: "We've just had this confirmed by Ascot - Harry's Girl did suffer a fatal injury. Our thoughts go out to connections. It's desperately sad for the Hannon team after their celebration with yesterday's winner Haatem."
The sorrowful news follows the recent demise of another of Hannon's horses, Norman's Cay, at the Epsom Derby meet only a few weeks prior.
Meanwhile, True Love, trained by Aidan O'Brien and ridden by jockey Ryan Moore, triumphantly claimed her first win. Coming off the back of a second-place finish behind Gstaad in Tuesday's Coventry Stakes, True Love entered the race as the 9-4 favourite and lived up to expectations.
She took a while to find her rhythm in the race as Zelaina set a blistering early pace, but she rallied impressively in the final furlong to outpace 100-1 outsider Flowerhead, with Patrick Biancone's American contender Lennilu coming in third. This victory marks O'Brien's inaugural win in the Queen Mary.

John Gosden said: 'The ground was too quick for her, it dried out too much for her and she wants stepping up to a mile and a quarter. 'She's actually run well for a filly who wasn't in love with the ground, so we will just now go a mile and a quarter with a bit of ease in the ground and hopefully win a Listed race with her.' At the business end of proceedings it was Andrew Balding's Miss Information (11-1) and the Gavin Cromwell-trained Snellen who came to the fore, with the former coming out on top by a length in the hands of Oisin Murphy. Balding said: 'She's been a star, this filly. She had no luck last time at Epsom, she got shuffled back and just didn't seem to enjoy herself. 'Fast ground is what she wants, she just about got the mile. 'It's so nice for her owner, they really get a lot of enjoyment out of it and I'm so pleased for them. 'She's in the Bunbury Cup, we will try to get some black type at some stage and she'll make a lovely broodmare.' It comes just a day after the King's horse Reaching High was well-beaten on the opening day as Ascending won the Ascot Stakes by a head. The horse, ridden by Ryan Moore, was the hot favourite before the runners set off at the historic Flat race meeting, at 11/4 to claim the £57,000 first-place prize ahead of going to post. Trained by National Hunt superstar trainer Willie Mullins, Reaching High was bred by the late Queen Elizabeth II out of Estimate, who won the Ascot Gold Cup in 2013.

I played for Rangers and PSG under one infamous Ibrox boss and now I am managing a team in France's seventh tier
Jeremy Clement spent a season with Gers in 2006/07 after arriving from Lyon in a £1million deal Paul Le Guen's ill-fated six month stint as manager of Rangers is one that fans of an Ibrox persuasion have tried hard to erase from their memory over the years. And as it turned out, one of the players that the Frenchman brought with him from Ligue 1 didn't last much longer. After taking up the reins in Govan from Alex McLeish in the summer of 2006, the infamous boss moved quickly to sign Jeremy Clement in a £1milion deal. The midfielder was a part of Le Guen's Lyon side that romped to the league title in 2005, the fourth of seven consecutive Ligue 1 crowns won by the club before rivals Marseille and now Pars-Saint-Germain established themselves as the most dominant force in France. However, much like his manager, Clement's spell in Glasgow was far from successful. The playmaker started the majority of his 23 appearances for the Light Blues but was sent packing back to France for £1.8m in the following January, linking up with Le Guen for a third time at PSG just weeks after he had been given the boot at Ibrox. Clement went on to win more silverware in the French capital, helping the club capture the now-defunct Coupe de la Ligue in 2008. After spells with Saint Etienne, AS Nancy Lorraine and minnows FC Bourgoin-Jallieu, the 40-year-old hung up his boots in 2020 to pursue a career as a manager with the latter. Clement held the role for two years before it was mutually decided not to renew his contract at the end of the 2021/22 season. But nearly three years on, the Gers flop is back in coaching after landing the job at amateur club FC Allobroges-Asafia in France's SEVENTH tier. Clement's experiences in the dugout next season will be a world away from some of the big nights he had during his playing career at Ibrox, the Parc des Princes and Parc Olympique Lyonnais. Speaking about his brief Rangers tenure back in 2020, the ex midfielder said: "I wanted to progress as a player so I decided to leave Lyon. "I had opportunities to sign for clubs in France, but I wanted to sign for a manager who knew what I could do, like Paul Le Guen, so I chose Rangers. "Rangers was a great adventure for me. It was my first experience abroad and a big change for me. "The country was beautiful, I met my future wife and Rangers are a legendary club, so I regard it as a great time for me. "I returned to France and went on to play for PSG, St Etienne and Nancy. I've had a great career. "Now I will take my coaching badges at Bourgoin-Jallieu and hope to become a manager one day when football returns to normal."
