Claudio Ranieri closing in on Italy head coach job

Yahoo6 hours ago

Legendary manager Claudio Ranieri is inching closer towards succeeding Luciano Spalletti as Italy's head coach, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The Azzurri have sacked Spalletti following the heavy defeat against Norway in a World Cup qualifier. He will step down after tonight's clash against Moldova.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has been in talks to convince Ranieri to take over the national team, and he is ready to give his go-ahead.
Rainieri has moved to a directorial role at AS Roma after serving as the club's interim head coach for the second half of the 2024/25 season.
The former Leicester City gaffer managed to navigate the troubled waters at the Italian capital club, helping them to a fifth-place finish in Serie A, meaning they will play in the Europa League next season.
Ranieri is expected to continue his dual role as Roma's advisor even if he accepts the national team job.
The 73-year-old has played a key role in recruiting Gian Piero Gasperini as Giallorossi's new manager.

In a career spanning four decades, Ranieri hasn't managed any national team, except for his short stint with Greece in 2014.
Since the Euro 2020 triumph, Italy's form has plummeted. They failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and also had a lacklustre campaign in the European Championship last year, falling short in the round of 16 against Switzerland.
The Azzurri have remained underachievers over the years despite having a diverse talent pool.
The defeat against Norway has put a dent in their chances of securing an automatic qualification for next year's World Cup.
Sitting fourth in their group, Italy need to at least aim for a second-placed finish to qualify for the play-offs.

FC Barcelona Announces Contract Termination And Saves $36.5 Million

FC Barcelona announced the contract termination of a now former first team player through a statement sent to members of the press on Monday afternoon in Catalonia. According to Mundo Deportivo, this move will help save Barca a much needed $36.5 million (€32 million) considering the pay that Frenchman was owed for the last two years of his contract. 'FC Barcelona and first team player Clement Lenglet have reached an agreement for the termination of his contract with the Club,' a statement from the Blaugrana began, before thanking the central defender for his 'gratitude' and wishing him 'luck and success in the future'. Lenglet arrived at Barca in 2018 from Sevilla after then-president Josep Bartomeu agreed to pay $40 million (€35 million) for his services. In 2022, however, the 29-year-old became surplus to requirements for head coach Xavi Hernandez at Camp Nou and went to Tottenham Hotspur on loan. The reigning Europa League champions decided not to make his temporary assignment permanent, and nor did Aston Villa after taking him on for the 2023/2024. At Atletico Madrid, however, Lenglet has found his feet and impressed across a campaign where he enjoyed 32 of 34 appearances as a starter. Rescinding his contract is key to Lenglet staying on in the Spanish capital. It of course means that Barca will not receive a penny from Atleti for a player that was still on its books. Yet perhaps most important for Barca, it will not have to pay Lenglet €16 million per season for the last two years of his contract, which could prove important in staying on the right side of Financial Fair Play (FFP) limits when it wants to bring in new players itself. Barca is expected to sign Joan Garcia from Espanyol this week, and will need to activate his €25 million release clause in order for the goalkeeper to cross town to the Pericos' bitter rival. As a consequence, Marc-Andre ter Stegen could be on his way out of the club but SPORT says he is ready to make things difficult and 'go to war' with the La Liga champions. With the likes of Pau Cubarsi, Inigo Martinez and Ronald Araujo all to choose from lest me mention substitutes such as Eric Garcia and Andreas Christensen, FC Barcelona coach doesn't need Lenglet. Atletico clearly likes him, however, and he's expected to sign a fresh deal until June 30, 20228 at the Metropolitano.

Spain tries to stay upbeat after shootout loss to Portugal in Nations League final

MADRID (AP) — As Cristiano Ronaldo lifted the Nations League trophy and his Portugal teammates celebrated behind him, Spain's players watched in clear disappointment. There was no major letdown after the penalty shootout defeat in Sunday's final in Munich, though. There were no calls for a coaching change. There was no blaming of players who underperformed. The feeling was that Spain is still on the right track. Before leaving the field, coach Luis de la Fuente gathered his players and made sure they remained upbeat and ready to start focusing on next year's World Cup. 'It was time to remind them that we have to be proud of this team, of what we have been doing,' De la Fuente said. 'I reminded the players that I'm proud to have them in the team. Now we have to start focusing on the World Cup. I'm still counting on every one of them, on those who were here and those who couldn't come this time.' Spain is the European champion and as a nation has been enjoying one of its best runs in international soccer. The women's team is the World Cup and Nations League champion. La Roja also won the men's Olympic tournament in France last year, as well as the 2023 Nations League. 'You can't question what this team has been achieving,' De la Fuente said. 'It has been defining an era, a style, and it will continue to do so, not because of me, but because of the players that we have.' After beating France 5-4 in the Nations League semifinals last week, Spain lost the final 5-3 on penalties after a 2-2 draw following extra time. Striker Álvaro Morata was the only player to miss his spot kick. 'Morata is a champion and a reference for us,' De la Fuente said. 'I'm responsible for his missed kick because I'm the one who asked him to take the shot.' Martín Zubimendi (21 minutes) and Mikel Oyazarbal (45) twice gave Spain the lead but Portugal rallied with goals by Nuno Mendes in the 26th and Ronaldo in the 61st. 'We have to overcome this defeat as best we can and value the positive momentum we have had in recent years,' Zubimendi said. 'This time we let the title slip away because of details. We have to keep our feet on the ground. We have been used to winning. Since I joined the national team I've only experienced positive things.' De la Fuente took over from Luis Enrique following defeat to Morocco in the round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He recently had his contract renewed by the Spanish soccer federation until 2028 and the next Euros. He is leading a team with a bright future thanks to young stars such as 17-year-old Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, Pedri, Gavi, Dean Huijsen and Pau Cubarsí. Spain's next match is in Bulgaria on Sept. 4 in the World Cup qualifiers. ___ AP soccer:
