Venezuela boost qualification hopes as Colombia falter
A calamitous fifth-minute own goal from Hector Cuellar and a 30th-minute strike from veteran forward Salomon Rondon ensured the three points for the Vinotinto in Maturin.
The victory, which came after a frustrating night for Colombia, left Venezuela in seventh place on 18 points — three points behind Colombia and Uruguay.
Venezuela travel to Uruguay on Tuesday knowing a win would put them in real contention for a top six spot and an automatic place in next year's tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
The final two games for Uruguay come in September when they are away to already qualified Argentina before a potentially crucial last match at home to Colombia on September 6.
The top six teams in South America qualify directly for the World Cup with the seventh placed country entering the inter-confederation playoffs.
Bolivia gifted the home side the lead when Cuellar played a gentle back pass towards his goalkeeper Guillermo Viscarra who somehow failed to control the ball which passed through his legs and into the net.
The much-travelled Rondon, Venezuela's all-time top scorer, doubled the lead on the half hour when he brought down a cross from the right and under pressure buried the ball in the corner with his left foot.
Jon Aramburu should have made it 3-0 in the 68th minute when he was set up by Rondon but side-footed wide.
Eighth-placed Bolivia, who now fall four points behind Venezuela, went close to pulling a goal back in the 75th minute when Lucas Chavez's effort grazed the outside of the post.
Colombia, runners-up in the Copa America last year, are making life difficult for themselves after being held by second to last Peru in Barranquilla, extending their winless run in the CONMEBOL qualifiers to five games.
Missing the suspended Liverpool winger Luis Diaz, Colombia lacked creativity in attack against a resilient Peru back line and they were booed off the field at the final whistle.
"Two fundamental things were missing to win the game, which was intensity....in the final third and precision. And I think Peru defended very well. They made it difficult for us in that sense," said Colombia's Argentine coach Nestor Lorenzo.
Colombia face Argentina in Buenos Aires on Tuesday. Argentina, who are on 34 points, are assured of top spot in the group while Ecuador and Paraguay are on 24 points ahead of Brazil on 22. Just six points separate second-placed Ecuador from seventh-placed Venezuela with three rounds of games remaining. — AFP

Lahore, Pakistan: Pakistan left out Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan from the T20 squad named Sunday for the Asia Cup and a warm-up tri-series beginning this month against Afghanistan and the United Arab Emirates. Clutch Maxwell leads Australia to T20 series win over South Africa
Cairns, Australia: Glenn Maxwell took a brilliant catch before smashing a half-century under pressure to help Australia overcome a dogged South Africa by two wickets and seal the three-match Twenty20 series in Cairns on Saturday. In response to South Africa's 172-7, Australia were in trouble at 122-6 in the 14th over before Maxwell stepped up with an unbeaten 62 off 36 balls. There was a late twist when South Africa quick Corbin Bosch dismissed Ben Dwarshuis and Nathan Ellis with consecutive deliveries. But Maxwell crunched a boundary on the penultimate ball of the match before celebrating with gusto. Hot favourites Australia won the first match but were stunned by a 52-run defeat in game two before moving to Cairns in northern Queensland, which hosted its first T20 international. "It was a little nerve-racking", Maxwell said. "I tried to stay on strike as much as I could and cash in on anything loose". Australia captain Mitchell Marsh elected to field in helpful conditions for seam bowlers, a contrast to the batting-friendly surfaces used in the opening two games in Darwin. Liverpool edge Bournemouth in thrilling opener
LIVERPOOL: Liverpool kicked off the defence of their Premier League title in an entertaining 4-2 victory over Bournemouth on Friday, with manager Arne Slot bowled over by the atmosphere on an emotional Anfield evening as two late goals stole the show. "Do you have half an hour?" the Dutchman said laughing when asked to sum up a night that started with a tribute to their Portugal forward Diogo Jota, who died in a car crash last month. Bournemouth and us playing full gas for 96 minutes, or even longer, 99 I think and the referee (Anthony Taylor) who just kept the game going, didn't blow his whistle every single time for every small thing. "It was a great game to watch. In the end, we won it. So that helps for my emotions". However, the overriding emotion on the night, Slot said, was how "impressive and powerful the tribute for Jota was". TOUCHING MOMENTS There were numerous touching moments at Anfield in honour of the Liverpool forward and his brother Andre Silva, who also died in the incident in northern Spain in July. "They sang for him (Jota) before the game, in the first minute, after 20 minutes and again at the end. It was so impressive, so powerful", Slot said. "His wife is here, his children are here and for them it might be special to hear how much he's loved over here". Scoring hero Chiesa, whose future at the club has been the subject of speculation, delivered a performance that felt like a gift to the fans who have sung his name since last season. "He gave them something in return", Slot said. The one negative for Liverpool was their defensive frailty, with Semenyo twice capitalising on the Reds' loose back line. "Normally, you can complain about our players not sprinting back hard enough, but they did", Slot said. "The only thing we need to do better, but that's in an ideal world, is where do you lose a ball? The best way is not to lose a ball. And if you do... lose it with a shot, or it ends up in a corner kick or a goal kick, but don't lose it at your own 18-yard line. But I always judge, how hard do they sprint back?
