Patna: Five constituent colleges of Patna University (PU) — Magadh Mahila College, Patna College, Patna Science College, Vanijya Mahavidyalay and Patna Law College — are likely to get new principals, to be appointed on the recommendation of Bihar State University Service Commission after a gap of about 15 years. The necessary formalities of their posting will be completed within a week, said PU sources. All five candidates — Suheli Mehta, Alka, Nagendra Prasad Verma, Anil Kumar and Yogendra Kumar Verma — whose names have been forwarded to the PU by the director of higher education, have been directed to report at the university office on June 9 for verification of their documents relating to their qualifications and experience. The statutes for the appointment of principals of constituent colleges assented to by the governor on May 3, 2024, state that the incumbent having experience as a professor will be preferably posted in the college offering postgraduate education, whereas those having experience as professors/associate professors will be posted in the institutes offering undergraduate courses. These postings will be made by the vice-chancellor in consultation with the chancellor's representative. Dean of students' welfare-cum-media in charge Anil Kumar said the posting of principals will be finalised by a three-member committee, headed by the vice-chancellor and consisting of the registrar and chancellor's representative. Magadh University English department teacher Rahmat Jahan has been nominated as the representative of the chancellor in PU. According to a notification issued by PU registrar Shalini, appointment letters will be issued to the new principals after ascertaining the genuineness of their academic qualifications and other documents required as per the guidelines of the chancellor's secretariat. Francisco Luis Gomes' ancestral house to be restored soon: Min
Margao: Minister for archives and archaeology, Subhash Phal Dessai, on Saturday said that his department would soon take steps towards the restoration of the ancient house of the Goan freedom fighter Francisco Luis Gomes, which now lies in a ramshackle condition. He also mentioned that he would personally inspect the house located at Colmorod, Navelim. 'I will ensure that the house is not only restored to its original glory but also becomes a symbol of inspiration for the younger generation to imbibe the values the great leader stood for and learn about all that he did for his motherland,' Phal Dessai said. He made these statements while addressing the gathering at a function held to commemorate Gomes's birth anniversary. Known as the 'prince of intellectuals', Gomes, who represented Goa in the Portuguese parliament, was also a historian, an economist, a doctor, and a writer. He died in 1869. Withstanding the ravages of time and vagaries of nature, Gomes's ancestral house, which is perhaps the last remaining vestige of his legacy, has served as a testimony to his life and works. After TOI first highlighted the condition of this dilapidated house in a report on May 31, 2009, the Margao Municipal Council (MMC), in its council meeting held on Nov 5, 2009, passed a resolution to 'acquire the old house…and conserve the same for future generations.' While the resolution has been gathering dust ever since, the house has so far survived the eyes of the land sharks. Further, Phal Dessai said, 'Prior to Goa's liberation movement, it was Dr Francisco Luis Gomes who raised his voice in the Portuguese parliament for the liberation of Goa. He used to argue passionately for civil liberties, educational reforms, economic development, and justice. He was one of the earliest Indian leaders to talk about the rights of colonised people, not just in Goa but across India.' Former Navelim MLA Luizinho Faleiro, South Goa collector Egna Cleetus, and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

"Historic day as scientists step out of labs to share research directly with farmers", says Agriculture Minister Chouhan
Puri (Odisha) [India], May 29 (ANI): Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Thursday hailed scientists stepping out of labs to share new agricultural research directly with farmers, emphasising practical implementation. The government has also extended the Modified Interest Subvention Scheme to provide financial support to farmers, marking a significant step toward boosting agricultural productivity and farmer welfare. Speaking to media persons, Chouhan said, 'It is a historic day for the country as the scientists leaving their labs are going to farmers to inform them about new research and agricultural developments. Knowledge will not remain in labs but will be implemented on the ground.' 'Farmers, the Central Agriculture Ministry, the state department, and agricultural universities work together to ensure production the Centre and the Cabinet extended the Modified Interest Subvention Scheme in the interest of farmers,' he told reporters. Earlier, on Wednesday, the Union Cabinet approved the continuation of the interest subvention component under the Modified Interest Subvention Scheme (MISS) for farmers for the financial year 2025-26 and approved the required fund arrangements. It is a Central Sector Scheme that ensures the availability of short-term credit to farmers at an affordable interest rate through the Kisan Credit Card (KCC). Under the Scheme, farmers received short-term loans of up to Rs 3 lakh through Kisan Credit Cards (KCC) at a subsidised interest rate of 7 per cent, with a 1.5 per cent interest subvention provided to eligible lending institutions. Additionally, farmers repaying loans promptly are eligible for an incentive of up to 3 per cent as a Prompt Repayment Incentive (PRI), effectively reducing their interest rate on KCC loans to 4 per cent. Overall agricultural credit flow also rose from Rs 7.3 lakh crore in 2013-14 to Rs 25.49 lakh crore in 2023-24. 'The Cabinet's decision reinforces the Government's unwavering commitment to doubling farmers' income, strengthening the rural credit ecosystem, and boosting agricultural growth through timely and affordable credit access,' the statement added.
