Middle-aged city couple clears SSC, 21-year-old son overjoyed
Mumbai: After nearly three decades of wait, Vinod More (51) and wife Sadhna Dhotre (43) cleared their SSC board exams, scoring 41% and 55.4%, respectively —a dream they once thought was out of had dropped out after Class 7. Sadhna lost her parents young and moved from Raigad to Vikhroli, where she struggled with a new school system and eventually left education behind. Vinod, born and raised in Mumbai, left school to pursue his passion for painting. The couple married, raised a family, and worked tirelessly—Sadhna as a domestic worker and Vinod as a driver. Sadhna also cared for her late brother's 2 children along with her own son (now 21), who is working while studying for TYBCom. During the Covid-19 pandemic, a friend told Sadhna about a nearby night school. Encouraged, the couple enrolled and, over three years, completed Class 8, 9 and 10—all while working full time. Vinod continued studying even through spinal issues. Their son was overjoyed. "We've always dreamed of opening a hotel. I think that will be our next step," said Sadhna. — Aaliyah Berchman
