‘Winning was one of the best days of my life'
Even 40 years on, Terry Berry can recall 'every minute and every shot' from the time he became this prestigious event's first-ever champion.
'It was one of the best days of my life,' says Berry, pictured left, who prevailed by one shot in 1985 in the inaugural year of the competition, now billed as the 'junior major'.
Berry had qualified as one of the top 15 finalists after winning the Liphook Junior Open with a 72. He was invited to an 18-hole competition final which took place at The Belfry, one month after Europe's historic Ryder Cup victory on the same course.

Aged 15, Berry was also the youngest competitor in the field of 14 boys and one girl, which included boys' amateur champion James Cook.
Berry remembers going to the range at 10pm the night before the finals and 'striking the ball well'. The next day he holed a 35ft putt for par on the first and 'everything fell into place after that'.
On the 18th, he drove into the bunker and was urged by his father, his caddie on the day, to lay up. 'The flag was on the top tier so we chose a five iron. It finished 6ft past and I knocked it in for a four,' he says. 'I shot a five over par 78, which sounds like a lot but it was a foggy and miserable day, and I won by one shot.'
In the Telegraph offices on Fleet Street, four lifesize pictures of Berry were put on display in the windows for weeks afterwards.
'Everyone in the golfing world knew what a big deal this was,' says Berry. 'It showed great vision from The Telegraph to start the competition. Golf was on the up in the mid-1980s and for the newspaper to put on an event for youngsters enhanced junior golf and gave it a real boost.'

Berry forged a fine amateur career, which included winning the Waterford Trophy, before turning professional in 1989 and playing for 11 years on the European Challenge Tour. He now owns his own property management firm and is a passionate military historian, taking tours to the Somme.
Berry plays off plus four today and remains a staunch advocate of the junior game, saying that Justin Rose's title sponsorship of the event is 'magnificent for the sport'.
'There's a great junior golfer in every club,' Berry says. 'You have to give yourself the best opportunity, work hard, stay focused, have a decent goal to aim for and have the encouragement of the club where you play.'

Sports icon Andy Murray was just a few years into his career as a professional tennis player when he decided to splash out on a luxury vehicle, but he soon came to regret it Andy Murray's brief fling with his Ferrari ended swiftly as the tennis star sold the luxury car only a few months after purchasing it. The Glasgow-born superstar, who turned professional in 2005, quickly made a name for himself on the ATP Tour and secured eight tournament victories in his first three years. However, 2009 marked a turning point for Murray, who clinched six tournament wins that year, including two ATP Masters 1000 events. With his prize money mounting and an additional two victories in 2010, upgrading his vehicle was on his agenda, particularly after passing his driving test that year. While he learnt to drive in a Volkswagen Polo, Murray felt a flashier car would fit given his burgeoning success on the tour, leading him to splurge a hefty £177,000 on a red Ferrari F430. Despite the allure of the vehicle, he didn't keep it for long and chose to sell it just a few months later. In addition to the eye-watering price he paid for it, he also had to fork out £100,000 for the car's insurance. He was labelled 'high risk' by insurers due to being under 25, male and a new driver at the time. In a 2016 interview with The Telegraph, he revealed the attention he garnered from driving the car played a significant role in his decision to part ways with it. And it led to him changing the vehicle out for a more understated model. "When I started to do quite well on the tour I thought I'd treat myself to a bright red Ferrari," said Murray. "I had always had a soft spot for them as a car brand and, when I was in the position to afford one, I decided to go for it. "However, I had to pay an incredible amount to get insured on it and, after a couple of weeks of driving it around, I realised it wasn't quite my style." He further explained that the compact size of the car posed challenges when he wanted to drive friends around. And it proved to not fit his means considering it wouldn't even accommodate his tennis gear. The Glaswegian was a no-frills kind of player throughout his career, and it's clear that attitude extends to his personal life too. And aside from the practicality, or lack thereof, Murray was clear the Italian stallion simply didn't suit him. "I'm not flash by any means, but a bright red Ferrari is a definite head-turner and I hated that," he continued. "It was also incredibly impractical, particularly when it came to finding space for a friend or for my tennis bag, so I decided to sell it after a few months." It was a full circle moment for Murray, who initially splashed out £200,000 on an Aston Martin before reverting back to the Polo he learnt to drive in. And that everyday run-around remains part of his car collection more than 15 years later. It's a testament to Murray's down-to-earth nature that he still has that car despite boasting a reported net worth of around £110million. That's according to his position in this year's Sunday Times Rich List. Among the other cars in his collection is a Mercedes AMG GTS, which reportedly came fitted with a tennis ball paint job. And he also owns a Tesla Model X, a BMW i8 and a Jaguar I-Pace.

Spurs dressing room's instant reaction to Postecoglou sacking speaks volumes
Tottenham made the bombshell decision to sack Ange Postecoglou on Friday after two years in charge and it appears that call has not gone down well with some members of the squad Tottenham stars have been left 'angry' by the decision to sack Ange Postecoglou, with some even planning to quit the club. Some stars believe that his eventual successor has a huge task of repairing the dressing room damage currently on show at the club. A number of Spurs stars have already spoken out on Postecoglou's departure on social media. Pedro Porro was the first to respond as he wrote: "Thank you for everything, boss. "I'll always be grateful for the way you led us, defended us, and kept us going through all the highs and lows. Teammate Richarlison also had a heart-warming message for his outgoing boss. Former Masters champion delighted to sign up to new NI Legends event at Galgorm
The Welsh wizard, who was also World No.1 during a remarkable career, will headline a field of former Major champions and Ryder Cup players for the Legends Tour event held at Galgorm on August 29-31. It will be the 20th professional event hosted by Galgorm, which previously was the location for the ISPS HANDA World Invitational on the DP World Tour and LPGA Tour, as well as the NI Open which was held on various tours. And Woosnam, who captained Europe to Ryder Cup success in Ireland at The K Club in 2006, is thrilled to get the chance to come and play at the event in two month's time. 'I am delighted to be heading back to Ireland to compete in this new Legends Tour event. Golf in Northern Ireland is thriving, especially with Rory McIlroy completing golf's Grand Slam recently and The Open returning to Royal Portrush next month,' said the World Golf Hall of Famer. 'Galgorm enjoys a great reputation as one of the country's best tournament venues and I am looking forward to competing here in August.
