But the former England star, who is married with two kids, was taunted by team-mates and fans over false claims that he was gay.
Opening up on life inside the dressing room, Le Saux told The Telegraph: "I can comfortably say that the environment I went into at Chelsea was incredibly tough and very debilitating in many ways.
"I always had that sporting anger and I was very competitive. That was in me.
"Stepping into Chelsea 's then training ground there was no duty of care. It was all about banter in the worst possible way.
"They talked about 'resilience' which was an excuse to abuse people.
"They said: 'Oh, we are toughening you up'."
Le Saux's mum Daphne sadly died when he was just 13 while he was playing in a football tournament in France.
He admitted: "If I hadn't been through what I went through as a youngster and my mum dying, I may not have been able to survive."
Le Saux previously said he felt targeted due to his unconventional lifestyle that saw him go to university and read The Guardian newspaper in the dressing room.
Abuse once came from Robbie Fowler on the pitch in 1999, who repeatedly bent over and pointed to his backside in the left-back's direction.
The Liverpool striker later apologised in an interview in 2014 and Le Saux has forgiven him.
After hanging up his boots 20 years ago, Le Saux went on to hold positions at Real Mallorca and the FA.
He now works as a pundit for NBC Sports in the US and he runs an AI company that analyses football teams and players.

Anthony Joshua teases surprise move into another sport amid Jake Paul showdown talks

Anthony Joshua has taken to social media to make a plea to Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn over a business venture in a different sport. Since turning professional in 2013 Joshua has been attached to the Matchroom banner, a partnership that led to two-time world champion status for the 2012 Olympic gold medallist. Currently sidelined as he recovers from elbow surgery he underwent earlier this year, Joshua appears to be brainstorming ideas for life after boxing, suggesting to Hearn that they tackle football agency together. He posted on his Instagram story: 'Eddie Hearn, the family has conquered darts, snooker, pool, boxing, fishing, golf, owning a football club & you've had a presence in basketball, netball & gymnastics. 'I believe 'we' could look at the football agency industry and have a strong presence. 'Imagine we help manager the player who helped England win the World Cup. 'Call me tomorrow mate.' Eddie Hearn's father, founder of Matchroom Barry Hearn, owned English Football League club Leyton Orient for the best part of two decades, but that is the limit of the family's direct involvement in the sport. However, Matchroom's success across a variety of sports would give them instant authority in the world of football. There has been some overlap with football agencies and promotions in the past, with one of the biggest companies in soccer, Wasserman, buying Team Sauerland and creating Wasserman Boxing in 2021. In May, Joshua confirmed that he was exploring the possibility of buying shares in hometown football club Watford. The Hornets have bounced between the Premier League and Championship over the past 20 years, but whilst Joshua is fond of the club, it appeared to be more of a financial decision. He told Seconds Out: "We wanted to move into private equity, venture capital funds. As you earn, naturally, you want to save. "So rather than me spending recklessly I'm trying to invest money into certain asset classes and that was an opportunity that presented itself. 'Nothing's come of it yet. It's a serious investment. If it comes off it's one that should do well. 'If they went back to the Premier League, then I'd need to get a shop on Market Street because the traffic that would be coming through Watford would be phenomenal. 'If we don't do it then good luck to them anyway because they're a great team." Speculation has surrounded Joshua in recent days, with rumours about his next opponent. Latest Queensberry recruit Tony Yoka is one mooted option, but Jake Paul's camp have claimed that talks with Matchroom have started regarding a potential bout between their fighter and Joshua. The burning Celtic and Rangers questions answered as the Saturday Jury looks at the seismic issues

The Ibrox side have taken a step closer to the big time but the Hoops are still on the lookout for reinforcements to boost chances Will Rangers go all the way to the Champions League group stage? SCOTT BURNS: The reality is Rangers should be beating Viktoria Plzen. Hearts shouldn't have lost to them last year. I would expect Rangers to get to the play-off round and then it comes to the luck of the draw. ‌ SCOTT MCDERMOTT: They've given themselves a real chance with victory over Panathinaikos. I expect them to see off Plzen and set up a mouth-watering play-off. If they can avoid Benfica or Club Brugge in that they can defy the odds and make it. ‌ MICHAEL GANNON: The Champions League dream is on. Plzen shouldn't be underestimated but Rangers can see them off and have a right good go at it. There's nothing lose as the Europe League is in the bag and anything from here is a major bonus. ‌ Would Rangers be better developing their own players than signing young Premier League talent on loan? SCOTT BURNS: Ideally that is where they want to get to. Russell Martin had it got a bottom-less pit and so if a loan can fill a gap then by not do it? SCOTT MCDERMOTT: That depends on how good the Premier League prospect is. In the case of Mikey Moore, Rangers have no-one in their academy who's even close to his level so if the opportunity is there to get someone of his ability, they have to take it. MICHAEL GANNON: Rangers need to build for the future but they also need to sort out the here and now. Young players at the club – and at any club – should use these kids of moves as motivation. If they are good enough they'd be in the team. It's up to them to break through. Has Celtic's slow window put their Champions League hopes in danger? SCOTT BURNS: It all depends on the draw. They might still have enough to get through. I just don't get why Celtic always leave a lot of their business to closer to the end of the window. SCOTT MCDERMOTT: It certainly won't help. We seem to say it every year with the Old Firm, in terms of them not being ready for these crucial Euro qualifiers. ‌ Brendan Rodgers clearly isn't happy with his squad – for that to be the case so soon before the Champions League tie isn't ideal. MICHAEL GANNON: They've taken a major gamble. They've had two windows to prepare for this clash so to go in with a squad in weaker shape while having money in the bank is such an unnecessary risk. Who will be the Premiership surprise packages this season? SCOTT BURNS: What is a surprise package? I would expect all the big city clubs to make up the top five and Dundee United or St Mirren to complete the top six. SCOTT MCDERMOTT: I'll go with Falkirk. Expect John McGlynn's team to excite and bring something different to the league. There might just be a single top six spot up for grabs beneath the big five and the Bairns can compete for it along with the likes of Dundee United and St Mirren. MICHAEL GANNON: David Martindale's Livingston are going to be a major nuisance to teams again this season. The Lions have a good blent of muscle and ability – with a top boss to boot – and no one is going to enjoy going to Almondvale
