A New Era for Motion Capture Has Arrived: Vicon to Launch its Markerless Motion Capture Technology at GDC

After years of Research & Development and an expansive beta program with some of the biggest names in VFX, Vicon's Markerless solution will empower creative and previsualization teams to bring ideas to life with greater speed and ease than ever before
OXFORD, United Kingdom, March 11, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Motion capture leader, Vicon, today announced it will launch its highly anticipated Markerless Motion Capture solution next week at the Game Developer Conference (GDC) in San Francisco.
The launch follows an immersive exhibition of the Vicon Markerless prototype at SIGGRAPH 2023. The technology was extensively beta-tested via Vicon's Visual Effects (VFX) Pioneer Program, through which the VFX and virtual production communities had the opportunity to discover, understand and define how markerless motion capture could be applied in their industries. Beta participants included Industrial Light & Magic, Gearbox Entertainment, Dimension | DNEG360, Dreamscape Immersive, Framestore Pre-production Services and others. The culmination of those efforts will be the general availability of Vicon Markerless for VFX on March 19.
Maximizing Creative Iteration
Vicon Markerless is built on 40 years of experience building high-fidelity motion capture solutions for industry leaders in media, entertainment, engineering and life sciences. It completely transforms rapid creative iteration by allowing users to instantly visualize ideas for better creativity early on. Vicon's markerless system comprises a new markerless motion-tracking camera ('Vanguard') and new software incorporating advanced computer vision, machine learning and proven algorithms to capture human performance without markers ('Shōgun Markerless' and 'Shōgun Post').
'Vicon's Markerless Motion Capture is like magic – providing Gearbox incredible flexibility and speed in the development and storytelling of our games,' said Randy Pitchford, founder and president of Gearbox Entertainment. 'Anyone of us at Gearbox, including me, can quickly jump into our Vicon Markerless Motion Capture volume – even in our street clothes – to quickly get the data we need as we work to bring exciting potential future projects to life, including Borderlands.'
'Vicon Markerless, developed over several years with meticulous attention to detail, sets a new standard for motion capture across games, film, episodic TV and immersive experiences,' said Vicon CEO Imogen O'Connor. 'It enables VFX teams to rapidly refine early creative ideas and iterations marker-free and offers a seamless transition to optical motion capture as needed. Markerless motion capture opens up a world of possibilities for the VFX industry and delivers greater efficiency in creating innovative entertainment.'
Pre-Visualization and Rapid Prototyping
Without flexible and accessible options for previsualization, real-time discovery, location set-up, blocking, rehearsing and other use cases, studios are forced to rely on manual animation and full motion capture shoots with fewer iterations.
With seamless pipeline and ecosystem integration, Vicon Markerless reduces time to visualization, enabling rapid iteration from prototyping and previsualization to real-time animation – even with props. Creative teams can quickly explore ideas marker-free and transition efficiently to full optical motion capture when required.
'The new markerless system from Vicon has significantly accelerated our creative process, enabling us to reach results faster,' said Ben Kolakovic, Virtual Production Operations Manager at Industrial Light & Magic, a beta participant. 'We now receive mocap data much more quickly than before, which allows our artists to experiment with new ideas in a fraction of the time. This streamlined workflow not only fosters creativity but also enhances our ability to iterate efficiently and fine-tune performances.'
Vicon Markerless integrates seamlessly into existing Vicon optical motion capture pipelines and increases team efficiency with a single ecosystem across calibration, capture and data cleaning pipelines.

ZeniMax QA workers win tentative union contract with Microsoft

After two years of negotiating, ZeniMax Workers United-CWA, the union representing quality assurance workers at ZeniMax Media, has reached a tentative union contract with Microsoft, according to the Communication Workers of America. The union originally formed in 2023 and was immediately recognized by Microsoft, which made its commitment to stay neutral towards union organizing at ZeniMax official in 2024. The new contract will cover over 300 ZeniMax employees and includes "substantial across-the-board wage increases as well as new minimum salaries for workers," the CWA says. The contract also includes language protecting workers from the impacts of AI and "a crediting policy that clearly acknowledges the QA workers' contributions to the video games they help create." "Video games have been the revenue titan of the entire entertainment industry for years, and the workers who develop these games are too often exploited for their passion and creativity," Jessee Leese, a QA tester and ZeniMax Workers United-CWA bargaining committee member shared in the CWA announcement. "Our first contract is an invitation for video game professionals everywhere to take action. We're the ones who make these games, and we'll be the ones to set new standards for fair treatment." The new contract is considered "tentative" until union members ratify it, but because existing contracts often act as a reference in ongoing negotiations, the agreements ZeniMax workers secured will likely serve as a standard for other unions going forward. ZeniMax QA testers aren't the only video game union at Microsoft — QA workers at Raven Software, QA workers at Activision, workers at ZeniMax Online Studios and the development team behind Overwatch are all still in active negotiations with the company. Outside of Microsoft, the CWA also announced the United Game Workers-CWA union at this year's GDC, as a another option for representation. United Game Workers-CWA is a direct-join union, a labor organization that all workers in an industry can participate in without needing legal recognition from an employer. The idea is that currently employed workers, anyone who's been laid off and freelancers can all still wield power together, even without a potential contract hanging in the balance.

Gearbox's Randy Pitchford Responds To ‘Borderlands 4' Price Debacle

Borderlands 4 Gearbox Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford went extremely viral yesterday after a week-old tweet was passed around responding to a fan comment about a potential $80 price for Borderlands 4: 'A) Not my call. B) If you're a real fan, you'll find a way to make it happen. My local game store had Starflight for Sega Genesis for $80 in 1991 when I was just out of high school working minimum wage at an ice cream parlor in Pismo Beach and I found a way to make it happen.' The tweet inspired hundreds if not thousands of takes about its tone-deafness, plus gaming outlet coverage far and wide. It comes at a time when consumer spending power is dropping and prices are going up, and telling people if they're a 'real fan' they can make an $80 price work did not go over well, to say the least. Many fans said the tweet had derailed promotion for the game out in four months, others said they wouldn't play at all now. I find this at least…somewhat dramatic, and I have my doubts a tweet is going to significantly affect Bordlerands 4 sales this fall. But that price might. Today, Pitchford addressed the tweet by posting an older clip where he was asked about a potential price. It's a much more nuanced take on the issue, though it certainly seems to indicate that $80 is in the cards. Though this time, he says things like how he wants to create a value that fans will be happy with at any price, and addresses the plain fact that the production cost of Borderlands 4 is double that of Borderlands 3. I am no stranger to off-putting tweets from Pitchford as I've had some dust-ups myself. But a poorly-put tweet does in fact represent a larger reality (as explained in this video) about ballooning video game costs, which is true. I remember when it was revealed that Insomniac's Spider-Man 2 had triple the budget of the first game despite using a barely larger version of the same city and a second hero that had already been created for a spin-off. This is certainly not to say that $80 is the right call. Consumer only just got used to the $70 increase from $60 a few years ago, and now this leap to $80, spearheaded by Nintendo and its Mario Kart World pricing, is irritating and exhausting when 4-5 games will now be the cost of an entire console by themselves. This is what's going to happen, however. The dam has broken. In a year and a half at most, you are going to see practically all AAA games priced at $80. There is fan theorizing about Borderlands 4 publisher Take Two trying to push that even further for the release of GTA 6, the biggest game of all time, seeing if they could get to $100 or more. However, this leaves room for smaller games and smaller studios to shine. The highest rated games of the year are $50 or under, including GOTY frontrunner Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 along with Blue Prince and Split/Fiction. So that's an opportunity there. It's a bad tweet. It also reflects an unfortunate reality that's coming no matter what. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram.
