Cubs ace Shota Imanaga progressing from hamstring strain
CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Cubs ace left-hander Shota Imanaga has taken a step toward returning from a left hamstring strain that has sidelined him since May 4, manager Craig Counsell said on Wednesday.
Before the Cubs series finale again Colorado, Imanaga threw a 28-pitch bullpen session, ran and took fielding practice.
'So all in all, a very good workday,' Counsell said. 'Kind of repeat that this weekend, assuming everything turns up well tomorrow, and then go from there.'
Imanaga would next progress to the Cubs training facility in Mesa, Arizona. That could happen when the Cubs start a nine-game road trip Tuesday, Counsell said.
Imanaga was an All-Star last season, his first in the majors after coming from Japan, going 15-3 with a 2.91 ERA in 29 starts. He signed a $53 million, four-year contract with Chicago in January 2024, then finished fourth in balloting for the NL Rookie of the Year.
The 31-year-old started this season at 3-2 and 2.82 ERA in eight starts before getting hurt in Milwaukee as when he went to cover first base on a potential double play in the sixth inning of a 4-0 loss.

Around 1,000 motorcyclists took to Chicago roads Sunday to remember police officers who went above and beyond the call of duty for Chicago. The 21st Annual Chicago Police Memorial Foundation's Area Four Ride to Remember took off from the United Center Sunday morning. The ride honored officers who were killed or catastrophically injured on the job. It ended at the Gold Star Families Memorial in Burnham Park, east of Soldier Field. There were ceremonies and tributes to the fallen and the loved ones they left behind. Chicago Police Supt. Larry Snelling spoke at the event at the memorial, as did Chicago Police Memorial Foundation Executive Director Phil Cline — himself a former police superintendent. All proceeds from the Ride to Remember are donated to the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation.

Richard King Mellon Foundation gifts $10 million grant to Pittsburgh Cultural Trust
The Richard King Mellon Foundation has gifted the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust with a new $10 million grant to help the nonprofit cover the remaining construction costs to fund Arts Landing. The grant is "among the largest philanthropic gifts to the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust in its four-decade history," per a press release from the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. The grant will also support other functions of the space, which is scheduled to open to the public in 2026. "The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust is profoundly grateful to the Richard King Mellon Foundation for this capstone contribution that helps ensure our shared vision for Arts Landing becomes a reality for our community," said Kendra Whitlock Ingram, President & CEO of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. "This is a defining moment for the Cultural District and Downtown Revitalization Vision—made possible by immense generosity and leadership from philanthropic and civic partners." "Pittsburgh's first Renaissance officially began 75 years ago, in May 1950. Then, and ever since, the Richard King Mellon Foundation has helped to lead Pittsburgh's ongoing strategies to achieve greater prosperity for the people of our beloved city," said Sam Reiman, Director of the Richard King Mellon Foundation. "Our Trustees wanted to demonstrate that leadership again for Arts Landing. This $10 million grant will provide the capital necessary to complete construction. And, just as importantly, it will help to ensure the Cultural Trust has the means to maintain and operate Arts Landing as a safe and desirable destination for many years to come." Arts Landing has been described as "a creatively designed, community-focused, and sustainably operated civic space that will host festivals and performances, exhibit public art, and provide opportunities for everyday recreation" to further revitalize Downtown Pittsburgh.
