Bishop McCort moves on, Chestnut Ridge falls in PIAA Team Wrestling Championships

Yahoo08-02-2025

ALTOONA, Pa. (WTAJ) – There won't be a rematch of last year's semi-finals match in the PIAA Team Wrestling Championships between Chestnut Ridge and Bishop McCort. The Lions lost to Berks Catholic 51-11 in the quarterfinals, while the No. 2 ranked Crushers crushed Montoursville 58-8.
With a match that went deep into overtime, Bishop McCort heavyweight Caleb Rodriguez provided an unlikely spark to the Crushers early in the dual with a 7-4 win over Landon Morehart.
'He did a great job sparking us there,' Bishop McCort junior Bo Bassett said. 'I think that got the momentum rolling and then we were able to kind of take it from there.'

The Crushers were in fact able to take it from there, winning 9 out of the final 10 matches by either technical falls or falls.
Bishop McCort now faces Berks Catholic in the semi-finals on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. before possibly having revenge against No. 1 ranked Faith Christian, who handed the Crushers a loss in the PIAA Team Championship Final last year.
'We know what everybody's looking forward to but (we're treating it like) it's one match at a time. The biggest match for today was Montoursville (and on Saturday) it's going to be Berks Catholic,' Bishop McCort head coach Bill Bassett said. 'After we get through them, we'll worry about Faith Christian.'
'When you're wrestling the toughest state in all the country. You've got to be ready to go every round,' Bo said. 'We're really excited for that one in the finals, but we still have got one to take care of in the finals and then we're all locked in on the national finals.'

Meanwhile, Chestnut Ridge was tied with Berks Catholic at 5 after Jayden Imler won by tech-fall in the second bout of the meet. The two teams split matches at 107 and 114 pounds, but then it was all downhill for the Lions.
NC State commit Dominic Deputy was caught in a cradle and was stuck on his back for close to a minute, leading to a pin for Berks Catholic's Neil Bitting. After bouncing back and winning at 127 lbs., Chestnut Ridge would go on to drop the last six matches either by tech-falls or falls.
The PIAA Team Wrestling Championship Finals are set for 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.

LIV Golf Virginia: Anirban Lahiri charges to lead after stellar 64 in Round 2

GAINESVILLE, Va. — Although the spotlight is typically on Crushers GC captain Bryson DeChambeau, and rightfully so, it was another Crushers GC player that charged to the top of the leaderboard on Super Saturday at LIV Golf Virginia. Anirban Lahiri, who has four runner-up finishes without a win on LIV Golf, shot a brilliant 7-under 64 to seize control of the individual leaderboard. The 37-year-old made seven birdies without a blemish on the scorecard. Lahiri made a 39-foot par putt on the 16th hole to salvage his momentum and converted another miraculous par on the 18th after having to get up-and-down from over 100 yards away in the rough. [MORE: How to watch LIV Golf Virginia 2025: Schedule, start time, TV channels, tee times] A trio of veterans, Graeme McDowell, Bubba Watson and Martin Kaymer, also announced their presence on the leaderboard heading into Sunday's final round. At 9-under par, they find themselves just two shots back of Lahiri. McDowell, who's never finished better than T5 in any LIV Golf event, shot a 5-under par with birdies on Nos. 15, 16 and 17 to catapult himself up the leaderboard. Watson, captain of RangeGoats GC, made birdies on 17 and 18 before finishing with pars on Nos. 1 and 2 to finish his round. Kaymer has played steady golf all week and kept himself in the mix with a 67 after sharing the first-round lead with DeChambeau. McDowell, 47, Watson, 48, and Kaymer, 40, will all have a fantastic opportunity to challenge for their first LIV Golf win. [MORE: 2025 LIV Golf Virginia odds, predictions: Favorites, picks from the field] Smash GC had an excellent day, tying the team lead (-20) with the Lahiri-led Crushers. All four Smash players shot under par with Talor Gooch and Jason Kokrak both shooting 67 to go along with McDowell's 66. Paul Casey played an inspired round for the Crushers, shooting a 5-under-66. LIV Golf's top three in the individual standings: Joaquin Niemann, DeChambeau and Jon Rahm all are within striking distance. The three are tied for fifth at 7 under and just four off the lead. Lahiri, Watson and McDowell will play in Sunday's final group, as tee times have been moved up due to weather.
