Proteas wicketkeeper Sinalo Jafta is widely heralded as one of the best cricketers in the world, but she is also a great advocate for overcoming addiction and the stigma surrounding the issue.
In late 2022, Jafta was voluntarily admitted to an alcohol rehabilitation facility in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.
Back then, the 27-year-old could have been forgiven for thinking her cricketing career may already be over.
Now Jafta is coming up to three years sober, and is one of the fixtures of the South African team.
Since her debut for South Africa in 2016, Jafta has made 95 appearances across all three formats, solidifying her place in the Proteas side.

One Day at a Time for Jafta
When asked how she turned her life around, Jafta revealed how she instead saw it as starting a new chapter in her life.
'I don't see it as success. For me, it's literally just the 24 hours that is very important to me. And I think when I went into treatment, that was the one thing that I wasn't focused on. I was more focused on what I am doing outside of the game," Jafta told SportsBoom.co.za in an exclusive interview.
'But then as soon as I got there, they literally said focus on 24 [hours] and how you see cricket and how you play cricket. You literally focus on that day because that's the most important.'
As any Narcotics Anonymous (NA) or Alcoholic Anonymous (AA) teachings will preach, it's about living one day at a time. This is a philosophy that the 30-year-old sticks to religiously.
'If I think too far ahead, I don't know whether relapse is coming tomorrow. But if I know that I'm sorting out what I'm meant to do today, I won't relapse tomorrow. It's more like a domino effect. And I think anyone that's going through anything with addiction or with sobriety in general, it's okay."
'I think if someone told me that it was okay and [if I had] asked for help, I think that's the biggest thing. There's nothing to be ashamed of because your story is not done yet."
'And I always think of life as chapters. It was just another chapter of my life. So now I'm looking forward to the rest.'

Picture: Henk Kruger Independent Media A TACTICAL masterclass is what South African Comrades Marathon runner Gerda Steyn produced in landing her fourth title on Sunday. Even when Elizabeth Mukoloma pulled away at a blistering pace from her in the early stages, Steyn kept her composure, and once she reclaimed the lead, she held that position all the way to the 'down run' finish line at the People's Park in Durban. The result confirmed Steyn's status as the dominant force in ultra marathon running in South African with her third consecutive title, her maiden win came in 2019. She crossed the line in five hours, 51 and 19 seconds (5:51:10). While the latter stages of the race became somewhat of a grind for her. Steyn did seem to have her struggles but she managed her fatigue once again. Alexandra Morozova finished in second (5:55:56) and provided a serious challenge, but did not have the legs to catch Steyn ultimately. Steyn started at a steady pace, and was content to let Elizabeth Mukoloma lead the way in the early on. Earlier, in a first for the Comrades Marathon, the elites went off 15 minutes ahead of the rest of the field in what was an attempt to alleviate some of the congestion of runners at the start.

Gerda Steyn wins her fourth Comrades Marathon
Gerda Steyn laboured more than in previous victories but continued her dominance of the South African ultra-marathon running and the Comrades Marathon clinching her fourth win in the 2025 race. At on stage near the end the gap between Steyn and second-placed Aleksandra Morozova of Russia was less than three minutes approaching the finish. Steyn dug deep and ran into the People's Park finish strongly to take the win in an unconfirmed time of 5hrs 51min 19sec, well off her 5:44.54 in her 2022 win in the last down run in 2023. The 2025 race would always have slower times given it was run over 89.98km, about 2km more than the last down run in 2023 won by Dijana because of a finish at the People's Park outside Moses Mabhida Stadium due to renovations to the 2010 Fifa World Cup semifinal venue. However, Steyn did grimace and show unusual signs of strain in the last 10km coming into Durban. The women's race best time record-holder added to her wins in 2019, 2023 and 2024.
