Mexican telecoms regulator fines Telcel $93 mln for monopolistic practices
The fine follows an investigation launched in 2021 by the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) at the request of a competitor over alleged monopolistic practices by Telcel in the national market for the distribution and commercialization of SIM cards through convenience store chains.
"Telcel denies having committed the practice referred to in the resolution," America Movil said in a statement, adding that Telcel will challenge the investigation and fine "through all available legal means."
"Telcel considers it is an arbitrary and disproportionate fine based on competitor's allegations and in a biased investigation, lacking evidence, carried out by the IFT's Investigation Authority," the parent company added.

Mormon missionary president is shot during violent home invasion in Mexico City
The president of a Mormon mission in Mexico City was shot at point-blank range during an early morning robbery attempt at his house. Ohio-born Tyler Wallis, 57, and his wife Elizabeth Wallis, 54, were at their home in Mexico's capital when an intruder broke in around 2am and attacked him. The burglar shot Wallis with a 9mm pistol just below the sternum and the bullet penetrated two inches without hitting any organs or arteries, family members shared in a Latter Day Saints Facebook group. 'An undeniable miracle that he is not dead,' they added. According to another relative, Elizabeth texted the family group chat immediately after the shooting, begging for prayers. Elizabeth was left unharmed in the violent robbery. Wallis was treated at a nearby medical center in Mexico City and is in stable condition, church spokesperson Sam Penrod said. 'The Church is cooperating with local authorities as they investigate the incident. All missionaries are safe,' an announcement the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints website reported. One of their daughters shared an update on Wallis's health: 'My dad is doing well - we appreciate all the prayers and rejoice in miracles,' their daughter Madeleine shared on Facebook. The post was flooded with comments promising to pray for Wallis. Wallis had moved to Mexico City less than two months ago and began serving as mission president on July 1. 'A new chapter of our life has begun,' Elizabeth said in a Facebook post announcing their move, adding, 'We are excited to serve the Lord in this capacity.' The couple are originally from Orlando, Florida, and have four children. Elizabeth works as a life coach for parents of children with anxiety. 'My husband and I raised our four children in 6 cities. I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I am a woman trying to reduce anxiety in the world,' she shared on her website. While Mexico City has become safer in recent years, there is still a high rate of robbery, according to data from Dow Jones. Violent robberies remain a risk in many neighborhoods close to central areas, especially in the central Cuauhtemoc borough.

Michelin-starred restaurant launches ‘water only' menu with bottles selling for eye-watering sum
A MICHELIN star restaurant has made a splash by introducing Britain's first water only menu, with some bottles costing up to £20. The French fine dining restaurant wanted to experiment with its epicurean menu after pitching the idea three years ago. 7 7 7 7 Owner of La Popote in Cheshire, Joseph Rawlins, 32, worked alongside one of only five water sommeliers in the country to put it together. Joe, who is also the headchef of La Popote, gave the go ahead for the project at the beginning of the year. Sommelier Doran Binder, 52, then spent the last seven months deciding on the best bottles to feature the water. On offer from their menu is a selection of seven premium waters from across Europe to choose from - and they come served in wine glasses. Four of these are still, including tap water, and four are sparkling. The selection has been handpicked from various countries, including France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Iceland, and the UK. At the cheaper end there is Doran's own Crag Spring Water, which costs £5. For those looking for something a bit more extravagant, at the high end there is the £19 Portuguese sparkling water - The Palace of Vidago. Joe said: "The restaurant scene has changed a lot over the years we have been getting fewer big tables more groups of twos and fours. "That means at least one person there will mostly likely be driving and not be drinking as such. The restaurant's wine prices range from £28 all the way to almost £400 per bottle. In December 2022, La Popote was awarded a Michelin Guide listing, after Joe and his partner Gaëlle Radigon, 37, took over the restaurant in 2019. As one of their valued suppliers to the restaurant, Doran then pitched the idea of a bottled water menue to Joe in June 2023 by inviting the couple for a water tasting. He had been providing his award winning Crag Spring Water to the restuarant since 2018. Joe said: "He had pitched the idea to us and we had a laugh about it as we were unsure what he meant by it at first. "He then invited us down for a water tasting and that's when we realised that water isn't just water and explained he thinks there is an exciting new market." Water has a taste through the number of total dissolved solids that is found in the liquid, according to Doran. This includes minerals absorbed naturally from the earth before the water is extracted from its source. 7 7 7 With Gaëlle now pregnant and breastfeeding, Joe says the idea of an alternative to alcohol made even more sense: 'There is a limit to what she can drink. "We thought there was space for it so why not?" So in January this year, they decided to go ahead with the idea. Joe added: "We have noticed in the last 18 months a lot of people don't drink as much and are looking for an alternative to alcohol." Across the the seven months of putting the menu together, it changed three times. The selection of waters include: Still Crag Spring Water (UK, £5) – Binder's own award-winning water with a creamy, silky mouthfeel Sparkling Crag Spring Water (UK, £5.50) Icelandic Glacier Water (Iceland, £12) – sharp, dry and metallic with super low TDS Brand 22 (Spain, £11) – still, high TDS with a smooth mouthfeel and delicate mineral taste Lauretana (Italy, £12) – sparkling, low TDS, sharp and dry with a metallic finish Vichy Celestins (France, £9) – sparkling, high TDS, delicate and sweet The Palace of Vidago (Portugal, £19) – sparkling, high TDS, delicate with a salty, mineral profile Doran also chose between hundred of bottles in order to make the perfect menu: "I had been working on a water menu for the last three or four years trying to get a restaurant to pick it up but it has been really difficult. "People thought it was a joke and a gimmick but it was exciting when La Popote took me on. "What I have done is put together a quality range of interesting water. "It is a selection showing off the different TDS water has to offer." As a non-drinker, Doran hopes the water menu willl elevate the dining experience for customers. And there are still hopes to grown and expand the menu in the future.

New Mexico State, Greg Heiar settle wrongful termination suit
August 16 - New Mexico State and former men's basketball head coach Greg Heiar settled a wrongful termination suit on Friday with the university agreeing to pay him $600,000. Heiar was fired on Feb. 14, 2023 - less than one year into a five-year contract with a $300,000 annual base salary. Heiar's dismissal came less than one week after New Mexico State cancelled the rest of the team's season and placed the coaching staff on paid leave while the school investigated a police report that accused three players of hazing and sexually assaulting one of their teammates. Those incidents reportedly occurred from July 2022 to Feb. 2023. On Nov. 19, 2022, New Mexico State forward Mike Peake shot and killed a New Mexico student in Albuquerque. While police ruled Peake acted in self-defense because he had been lured to the New Mexico campus by four students - including victim Brandon Travis - Heiar and members of his staff appeared to play roles in stunting the police's initial investigation. Heiar had his team board a bus to leave Albuquerque even though the police asked to interview three New Mexico State players. A member of Heiar's staff, Lorenzo Jenkins, was found in possession of Peake's gun while Peake's phone later was found with an unnamed NMSU administrator. Heiar's contract called for a $1.2 million buyout if fired without cause, but NMSU denied that buyout by claiming he was fired "with cause." Heiar, who currently serves as head coach for Trinity Valley (Tex.) Community College, claimed he was innocent. In the wake of the settlement, Heiar's attorneys sent a statement to KRQE-TV in Albuquerque. "On behalf of our client, Greg Heiar, we are pleased to announce that a settlement has been reached in the arbitration of Coach Heiar and New Mexico State University. Coach Heiar is pleased that this matter is now fully and finally resolved to our satisfaction, and excited to continue his coaching career.
