Viewers left 'in tears' over disturbing documentary about 'most evil reality show ever'

BBC viewers have been left horrified after discovering the grim details of a one-off reality show that saw its star locked up alone in a room for a whole year, in a documentary called The Contestant. In 1998, budding comedian Tomoaki Hamatsu auditioned for the Japanese reality show named Susunu!Denpa Shonen or, Do not proceed, Crazy Youth.
The challenge he was tasked with was to temporarily cut himself off from the rest of the world and spend all of his time entering mail-in-sweepstakes until he won ¥1 million, which equates to around £6,000. Despite being given the choice to call it quits whenever he wanted to, he decided to soldier on for months, determined to complete the task at hand, which he carried out while being completely naked.
For almost a year, Hamatsu survived off winnings from magazine competitions, having to earn essential items like food, clothing and toilet paper too. However, the contestant thought his actions were going to be aired at a later time but it turned out the TV network was airing the footage live to around 17 million viewers a week in a segment named A Life in Prizes.
This was cruelly revealed to him after being surprised by an enthusiastic studio audience at the end of the show when he was taken into what he believed was another apartment, with the walls falling apart around him, the Metro reports.
At the time, he also picked up the nickname Nasubi, which he still uses today, after his genitals were covered up by an eggplant in the show, which translates to Nasubi in Japanese.
The Contestant documentary recounts what happened on the show and the details which Hamatsu was not informed of as well as an investigation of the 'ethical concerns of reality entertainment in the 21st century'. It was added onto BBC iPlayer this week.
However, after tuning in, viewers have branded what happened at the time as truly 'evil'.
Taking to X to share their horror, one viewer wrote: "Watched The Contestant and can't believe something this deceptive and cruel was allowed. He was completely humiliated for trash reality TV."
Another chimed in: "I'm horrified by all of this. This isn't fun or funny."
A third echoed: "That producer is evil."
A fourth remarked that the show was "absurdly cruel" while others said they'd been left "in tears" after watching it.
Somebody else wrote: "This is all very bizarre. I can't believe people watched this poor guy on TV. "
Speaking to Time s in a recent interview, Nasubi said that 25 years after the experience, he is trying to move forward with his life despite still holding so much 'hatred' towards the producer who led the show.
He said: "I've realised that I cannot change the past but by changing how I think about who I am today I can always change the future.
"When you put energy into other people rather than just focusing on yourself you become stronger than you could ever imagine."

Kat Slater star Jessie Wallace has revealed she was overcome with emotion after learning of Michelle Ryan's return to EastEnders. The actress, now 41, has reprised her role as Zoe Slater, Kat's on-screen daughter, two decades after her dramatic exit from Albert Square. In a behind-the-scenes video shared by the official EastEnders Instagram page, Jessie admitted she cried upon hearing that Michelle was reprising her role. She said: 'So, Michelle is back after 20 years. I've missed her tremendously, I've missed her, working with her, the whole Kat and Zoe thing, you know, going back to, 'You ain't my mother,' 'Yes I am.' 'And when I found out Michelle was coming back, I cried. 'And then when we met up, I cried because I've missed you.' Zoe made a bombshell return to the BBC soap on Monday night's episode, after her return was kept under wraps. Viewers will see Zoe in two further episodes this week but she will be back full-time this summer, as her mother Kat prepares to tie the knot with Alfie Moon for the third time. Zoe had been seen as a mystery figure throughout Monday's episode, with her face finally revealed during its closing moments. The episode hadn't been released on BBC iPlayer at 6am that morning, meaning all viewers had to tune into the evening broadcast, where Zoe's return was unveiled. 'She has her defences up, but this week you will see that she needs help, but whether she is willing to accept it is another story.' It comes after MailOnline revealed in February that, despite multiple attempts from bosses over the years, Michelle had refused to return to EastEnders. A source told MailOnline: 'Bosses reached out to Michelle several times over the years, they would love to have her back. For example, as the soap was approaching its big 30th anniversary, it was a gentle approach asking if she would consider a return in the lead up to it all. 'This was at the very early stages of their plans but Michelle refused and there was a lot of disappointment amongst bosses. The moment is still considered one of the most iconic in EastEnders' 40-year history 'It's always been quite baffling why she wouldn't want to reprise a character who is still very much adored by the fans. It's been 20 years since she left Albert Square but still people are talking about her character.' During her time on the show, Michelle was involved in one of EastEnders' biggest storylines with it revealed that Kat Slater (Jessie Wallace) was in fact Zoe's mother and not her sister, with explosive scenes seeing her yell: 'You ain't my mother!', only for Kat to reply: 'Yes I am!' Back in 2001, EastEnders' leopard-print-loving Kat Slater, who had been sexually abused by her uncle, finally revealed to her 'sister' Zoe that she was, in fact, her mother. It remains one of the most famous and iconic moments in EastEnders' 40-year history - a scene that has been mimicked by soap fans worldwide. The unforgettable storyline catapulted Michelle, then 16, to superstardom, and in 2005, she walked away from Walford for the final time, five years after arriving in EastEnders with the rest of the Slater clan. When Michelle shared an album of throw-back snaps of her on set 20 years ago to Instagram, her fans flocked to her comments as they were convinced she would make a return. Hugh Bonneville to reprise role as Ian Fletcher in BBC football comedy
The six-part show, Twenty Twenty Six, is a follow-up to comedy series W1A, which followed Ian as the head of values at the BBC. Bonneville, 61, will reprise the character as he takes on a new title, the BBC's director of integrity for the 2026 World Cup. Bonneville's character will join the Twenty Twenty Six Oversight Team in Miami, with a cast including The Day Of The Jackal's Nick Blood, Fresh Off The Boat star Chelsey Crisp and Designated Survivor's Paulo Costanzo. Stephen Kunken, best known for playing Ari Spyros in Billions, also joins the cast alongside The Inbetweeners' Belinda Stewart-Wilson. Director John Morton said: 'I wasn't sure what Ian Fletcher had been up to recently. The last I heard he was still recovering from a serious mindfulness course in Somerset. So, it's great to hear that he's made it back and has re-emerged in his natural habitat at the centre of a well-known institution, but now on the world stage and facing his biggest opportunity yet to get things right. 'I'm thrilled and hugely grateful to the BBC for giving me the chance to follow him again, this time all the way to Miami, and I literally can't wait to see what happens.' The character was first introduced in 2011 series Twenty Twelve, which followed an organising committee for the London Olympic Games. Bonneville was nominated for four TV Bafta awards and the original series took the Best Situation Comedy award in 2013. The series also starred The Crown's Olivia Colman, who won the 2013 Bafta for Best Female Performance in a Comedy. Bonneville is known for playing Robert Crawley, the Earl of Grantham, in period drama Downton Abbey, and has also starred in the Paddington films as Henry Brown. Executive producer Paul Schlesinger said: 'It's 15 years since Ian Fletcher's journey started with the run-up to the London Olympics and we are delighted the BBC has given John another chance to capture the universal comedy of people trying to organise something really big in a room, but this time with an outstanding international cast.' Twenty Twenty Six will consist of six 30-minute episodes and will be available to watch on BBC One and iPlayer.
