2025 USC Football Predictions: Trojans Ranked 26th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136

This isn't your average college football ranking.
My Ultimate 136 is a set of rankings that is fluid, but it's my job to look ahead and make a claim for all FBS teams based on what I know and why I know it. Here are the three pressing questions I started by asking when putting together this list:
Who do I think is good?
Why do I think they're good?
What are the chances they will finish above or below my expectations?
Here is a look at where USC lands in my Ultimate 136.
USC ranking: 26
Last year's ranking: 17
Top player: WR Makai Lemon: Recorded 764 receiving yards along with 514 kick return yards, ranking 10th among all Big Ten players in all-purpose yards (1,278); his eight receptions of 30-plus yards ranked fifth in the Big Ten.

RJ's take: Lincoln Riley returns Jayden Maiava, who threw for 1,201 yards, 11 TDs and six INTs in four games last season. He bombarded Notre Dame for 360 passing yards and led a comeback win against Texas A&M in the Las Vegas Bowl.

USC's 4-5 start last year could've easily been a 9-0 start if just half-a-dozen plays went the other way. The Trojans could've been the team we talked about like we did Indiana, who made the CFP before USC did. And that, like everything you upload to the Internet, really is forever.
This season, the Trojans won't have to play against Ohio State, Penn State or the aforementioned Hoosiers. They go to Purdue, Illinois, Nebraska and Oregon for Big Ten games, so the travel across two time zones might cost them one or two games.

LA28 marks 3 years to Paralympics with new emblems
LA28 unveiled two new Paralympic emblems to mark three years out from the first Los Angeles Paralympic Games. One custom emblem — named Relentless Reinvention — has 'a pixelated kaleidoscope of ideas that converge to create a transformed and multifaceted version of oneself - one that pushes the boundaries of what seems possible and reaches again and again for greatness,' according to LA28. Another custom emblem — named Innovation Moonshot — tries 'as many keys as possible until one unlocks full potential and maximum creativity.' It 'recognizes Los Angeles as a global hub of innovation - a city that continues to redefine what's possible, making it a driving force for progress and transformation.' Back in 2020, LA28 launched an unprecedented logo design — one that allows for an infinite number of emblems. Each one has a foundation of a black L, 2 and 8 with an A of personal choice and design. On Aug. 15, 2028, the first Paralympics to be held in Los Angeles will begin with an Opening Ceremony at SoFi Stadium. While LA previously hosted the Olympics in 1932 and 1984, the Paralympic Games did not start regularly following the Olympics in the same host city until 1988. The LA Paralympics will feature 560 medal events across 23 sports, including the debut of Para climbing. The venue plan calls for all of the competition sites to be within a 35-miles radius. After the Opening Ceremony at SoFi Stadium, medal events will be held at LA venues including the Coliseum (track and field), Arena (wheelchair basketball) and USC's Galen Center (badminton and wheelchair rugby). Dodgers need to ensure former USC baseball star Lars Nootbaar doesn't cost them dearly
Lars Nootbaar was born and raised in Southern California. He played college baseball for USC, where he was an all-conference outfielder. Now, however, Nootbar spends his time in St. Louis, where he plays professional baseball for the Cardinals. Last week, Nootbar returned to Los Angeles as the Cardinals traveled to face the Dodgers, the team he grew up cheering for. In the first game of the series, the USC baseball alum made a massive play to help secure the win for his team. With St. Louis leading 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Dodgers had a runner on first base and nobody out. LA shortstop Mookie Betts hit a blooper that looked as though it was going to drop into right field for a base hit. However Nootbar ran in and made an impressive diving catch for the first out of the inning. Thanks to Nootbar's play, the Cardinals held on to win the game 3-2. St. Louis would go on to take two of three games at Dodger Stadium, making it a successful homecoming series for the former USC star. Now the Dodgers have a challenge in front of them: They trail the San Diego Padres by one game in the National League West. They are half a game behind the Chicago Cubs for home-field advantage in a potential wild card series. One game could be all that separates the Dodgers from multiple National League competitors. The Dodgers, who have just been swept by the neighboring Los Angeles Angels, need to get right and make sure Nootbaar's play doesn't become the difference between hosting a series and going on the road, or between a wild card bye and having to play an extra round of playoff baseball.

Joel Klatt breaks down what he likes about the Oklahoma Sooners in 2025
FOX Sports college football color commentator and college football analyst Joel Klatt included the Oklahoma Sooners in his preseason Top 25 rankings a couple of weeks ago, ranking them 24th. On Wednesday, he dove further into why they could be a sleeper to contend for a spot in the College Football Playoff, but also why they may have trouble making a surprise run to the CFP. To put it simply, Klatt has some very strong likes when it comes to OU, but also some strong dislikes. Let's break down how the former Colorado quarterback feels about the Sooners heading into the 2025 season. Klatt Likes: New Offensive Pillars I love the additions on offense. John Mateer is a guy I'm very impressed with. I've talked about him at length this offseason. (Ben) Arbuckle, his offensive coordinator at Washington State, also joins him in Norman there. Their offense should be better. It was bad last year. The film was some of the worst that I've ever seen, to be honest with you. - Klatt, Joel Klatt Show Klatt called Oklahoma a playoff sleeper. Much of his optimism about the Sooners hinges on a significant improvement from the offense. Klatt is a believer in the Arbuckle-Mateer duo that came over to Oklahoma from Washington State. The Sooners finished 97th in the nation in scoring offense and were one of the worst offenses in the SEC last year. Oklahoma averaged just 13 points per game in conference play when you take the defensive touchdowns out of the equation. Along with Mateer, Oklahoma added one of the best running backs in the nation in Jaydn Ott, a number of playmakers at wide receiver and tight end, and veteran offensive linemen to provide better depth than what Oklahoma rolled into 2024 with. But a lot hinges on Mateer and Arbuckle producing at a similar level to what they did at Washington State. Mateer may not have the 4,000 total yards and 44 touchdowns, but if he comes anywhere close to that, the Sooners will have an offense that can contend in the SEC in 2025. Klatt Likes: Venables Calling The Defense Defense improved. The defense has steadily improved. Venables will be the play-caller on the defensive side for OU this year. I like that. I really like that. He's entering his fourth season. We've seen them have a double-digit win season under Venables. So, can it happen? Absolutely. Klatt, Joel Klatt Show Since the day Brent Venables was hired as Oklahoma's head coach, the Sooners were always going to run his defense, whether he was the one calling the plays or not. After all, Venables is one of the best defensive minds in college football and came back to Norman after calling and coordinating defenses for two national championship teams at Clemson. Ted Roof was the defensive coordinator and called the plays in 2022. He also held the position in 2023, but Venables was calling the plays that season. Venables turned play-calling duties over to Zac Alley last year, when he hired him to replace Roof as the DC in 2024. However, when Alley left after last season for the same role at West Virginia, Venables decided to take full control of the defense himself in his fourth season as the head coach in 2025, including the play-calling duties once again. Klatt Dislikes: The Schedule "Here's the problem. If they had a more favorable schedule, like Auburn's? I think I would probably pick them (as a CFP sleeper) right here," Klatt said. "But I can't, in good conscience, pick them with what their schedule is. They've had a losing record two of their first three years ... They went 2-6 in SEC play in their first year last year, with largely the same type of schedule and I think this one might even be more difficult. They're not making this jump ... Best-case is that they go into the Texas game undefeated, and then they still have to find, what, three or four more wins after that? I don't like it ... While I think they can improve, I don't think they'll make enough of an improvement, as it relates to their schedule, which we don't talk about enough, to go to the playoff." Klatt believes the schedule could hold Oklahoma back from reaching the College Football Playoff. The Sooners have a premier nonconference game against Michigan, before a very, very difficult conference slate that features Auburn, Texas, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri, and LSU. The Sooners hope they have the pieces in place to make a run at the CFP, a place they haven't been since 2019. With a new brain trust on offense, and a defense that returns solid production from a good unit a year ago, there's reason to believe that things will be better this fall. However, Oklahoma didn't get any favors at all from the SEC schedule-makers during their first two seasons in the league. How OU navigates their daunting schedule could ultimately tell the story of the 2025 team.
