Pierotti double lifts Lecce to win over Parma and out of Serie A drop zone

Yahoo31-01-2025

Santiago Pierotti scored twice in the second half and Lecce won at Parma 3-1 to move out the Serie A relegation zone on Friday for the first time since early November.
The win followed two heavy defeats for Marco Giampaolo's side and lifted it from 18th to 13th place in the 20-team table.
Lecce showed admirable resilience after seeing a goal disallowed from Nikola Krstović in the 24th minute and then going behind to another video-assisted decision, this time a penalty award that was dispatched by Emanuele Valeri.
But Krstović got the goal his hard work deserved two minutes later and then his assist allowed Argentina-born striker Pierotti to put the visitors ahead after 63 minutes.
A second half substitute, Pierotti made sure of all three points — and only Lecce's second win since mid-December — with a clinching goal in the third minute of stoppage time.
The result extended Parma's grim run of just one league win in its last nine matches. It dropped to 18th.

Man City signs left back Aït-Nouri from Wolves ahead of Club World Cup

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester City signed Algeria left back Rayan Aït-Nouri from Wolverhampton for a reported fee of 37 million euros ($42 million) on Monday. City has been deploying center backs Nathan Ake and, more recently, Josko Gvardiol at left back in recent seasons but now has a specialist option in Aït-Nouri, who is a very attacking full back. Advertisement The 23-year-old Aït-Nouri joined Wolves from French team Angers in 2020. His contract at City runs to 2030 and he will be available for the new-look, 32-team Club World Cup, which starts on Saturday. City is in the same group as Juventus, Al Ain and Wydad Casablanca and its first match is on June 18. ___ AP soccer:

Cavaliers' Darius Garland has surgery on the injured left big toe that hampered him during playoffs

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio (AP) — Cavaliers guard Darius Garland had surgery Monday on the injured left big toe that hampered him during Cleveland's exit from the playoffs. The Cavaliers said the procedure was performed by Dr. Nicholas Strasser at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, in consultation with team physician Dr. James Rosneck and Dr. Bob Anderson. The All-Star guard missed the final two games of the regular season and four games during the playoffs with the injury, which was described as a sprain. 'Definitely wasn't myself. It was pretty uncomfortable but trying to do everything to win the game. It was frustrating because I wasn't 100 percent,' Garland said after the Cavaliers lost to the Indiana Pacers in five games in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Garland is expected to send 4 to 5 months going through a progression of treatment and rehabilitation before resuming basketball activities by the start of training camp. Garland averaged 20.6 points and 6.7 assists during the regular season to help the Cavs finish atop the Eastern Conference.
