US Bitcoin ETFs near record month after $1.5B inflows in 2 days

Crypto Insight5 days ago

Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States are heading for a record-breaking month, helping push Bitcoin to new all-time highs amid rising institutional demand.
The US-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded more than $1.5 billion in combined inflows over a two-day period, with $608 million on May 21 and $934 million on May 22, according to data from Sosovalue.
A repeat performance of the past two days' inflows would see monthly inflows surge to $6.68 billion, surpassing the monthly record of $6.49 billion from November 2024.
ETF inflows helped Bitcoin rise to a new all-time high of $112,000 on May 22 before retracing to above $110,700 on May 23, up over 19% in the past week, TradingView data shows.
The 'robust' ETF inflows and Bitcoin's rise to new all-time highs signal growing institutional demand and rising realized profits 'without increased sell pressure,' Nexo dispatch editor Stella Zlatareva told Cointelegraph.
'Institutional inflows, corporate balance sheet moves, and macro dislocation converge into a clear message: Bitcoin is no longer the alternative — it's becoming the benchmark,' she added.
Recent surges in ETF demand coincided with $1 billion worth of Bitcoin being withdrawn from Coinbase on May 9 — a move analysts view as a signal of increasing institutional appetite. Institutional inflows to push Bitcoin to $200,000 in 2025
The 'structural' inflows from institutions may help Bitcoin surpass the $200,000 'base case' before the end of 2025, according to Bitwise's head of European research, André Dragosch.
'So the base case is $200,000, conditional on the US government not stepping in. If they step in, it will move closer toward $500,000,' Dragosch told Cointelegraph, referring to the US government's proposition to make direct Bitcoin acquisitions through 'budget-neutral' strategies.
Bitwise's 'in-house prediction' for 2029 is a $1 million Bitcoin price target, as Bitcoin's market cap will surpass the market capitalization of gold, as the leading safe-haven asset, Dragosch explained.
However, gold's $22.3 trillion market capitalization is still over 10 times larger than Bitcoin's $2.2 trillion, which makes BTC the world's fifth-largest asset, according to CompaniesMarketCap data.

MARA's Bitcoin mining revenue hits record $752M as BTC price soars

MARA Holdings, formerly Marathon Digital Holdings, reached a new all-time high in Bitcoin mining revenue, fueled by its recent surge to a record price. The company's annualized mining revenue exceeded $752 million on May 27, according to data from CryptoQuant, making it the most profitable day in the company's history. Marathon is currently the world's largest publicly traded Bitcoin mining firm by market capitalization. 'Quarterly reports are slow. Onchain shows revenue in real time,' CryptoQuant founder and CEO Ki Young Ju wrote in a May 27 X post, confirming the milestone. Marathon's record revenue surge occurred days after Bitcoin rose to a new all-time high of $112,000 on May 22, a development attributed by some analysts to Japanese bond market turbulence, which saw bond yields rise to new highs amid economic turmoil in the country. The revenue surge comes two weeks after MARA's earnings report for Q1, which missed Wall Street estimates by 0.35%. The company's Bitcoin production fell 19% year-over-year, primarily due to the April 2024 Bitcoin halving, which cut block rewards in half from 6.25 to 3.125 BTC. Marathon is the world's largest Bitcoin mining firm with a $5.18 billion market capitalization, according to Companiesmarketcap data. MARA's Bitcoin holdings surpass $5 billion Despite the reduction in production, Marathon has continued to expand its Bitcoin holdings. As of May 27, MARA's Bitcoin holdings were 48,237 BTC worth over $5.28 billion, making the Bitcoin mining company the world's second-largest corporate Bitcoin holder with over 0.23% of the total supply, Bitbo data showed. The top spot still belongs to Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), which holds over $63 billion in Bitcoin. Despite the revenue surge, daily miner revenues averaged around $50 million, significantly below historic peaks of $80 million, signaling that there is still 'room to climb back to those previous highs,' noted macro researcher and CryptoQuant author Axel Adler, in a May 27 X post. Marathon adopted Bitcoin as a strategic treasury reserve asset in July 2024, when it added $124 million worth of BTC to its balance sheet. Source:

Nasdaq files for 21Shares Sui ETF, kicking off SEC review

Nasdaq has filed for crypto asset manager 21Shares to list a spot Sui exchange-traded fund (ETF) in the US, initiating the Securities and Exchange Commission's review process. The stock market's May 23 19b-4 filing, which asks the SEC to list the 21Shares SUI ETF, follows 21Shares' April 30 submission of its S-1 registration statement to the SEC, which asked the regulator to approve trading of the proposed fund. Both regulatory filings are needed for the Sui tracking fund to go live, with the 19b-4 filing kicking off the SEC's review process. The agency must decide whether to accept, reject or delay the application within 45 days and it can delay its decision multiple times, for a maximum review period of 240 days. The SEC must decide on 21Shares' application by Jan. 18, 2026, at the latest. 21Shares proposed BitGo and Coinbase Custody as the custodians to hold SUI on behalf of the trust; however, the filing did not include details on a management fee or ticker. Canary Capital is the only other asset manager that has submitted 19b-4 and S-1 filings to list a spot Sui ETF, filing the forms on April 8. 21Shares said in its 19b-4 filing that the SUI token powers the Sui network and serves four main purposes: it can be staked to earn rewards, used to pay gas fees, function as a liquid asset for Sui applications and serve as a governance token. The Sui ecosystem is largely focused on decentralized applications and has been dubbed a potential Solana killer. SUI is the 13th-largest cryptocurrency, but its $12.3 billion market cap remains a fraction of Solana's $92 billion market cap, according to CoinGecko. 21Shares aims to add to SUI offerings 21Shares already lists a Sui exchange-traded product in Europe, on the Euronext Paris and Euronext Amsterdam stock exchanges. Those listings have contributed to SUI-based exchange-traded products having $317.2 million in assets under management (AUM), according to a May 26 report from CoinShares. Flows into SUI ETPs increased by $2.9 million between May 16 and May 24, and only trails Bitcoin, Ether, Solana and XRP in terms of net assets. Source:

$3.3B in crypto tokens set to unlock in June

Digital assets worth $3.3 billion are set to enter circulation in June as vesting periods for several major projects expire. According to crypto vesting tracker Tokenomist, $3.3 billion in tokens will be released in June, a 32% decline in unlocked tokens month-on-month. In May, such tokens totaled $4.9 billion. Crypto projects allocate tokens for various purposes. For example, a company may promise tokens to team members to reward them for their contributions or sell them to early investors. However, projects usually lock the tokens for a specific period to prevent early holders from dumping before the project matures. The data shows that $1.4 billion in tokens will be released through a 'cliff unlock,' while $1.9 billion will be emitted through a 'linear unlock.' Cliff unlocks release a large portion or all of the vested tokens simultaneously, while linear unlocks emit crypto assets gradually. Among the largest token unlocks in June is Metars Genesis (MRS), a non-fungible token (NFT) project that will release $193 million worth of tokens on June 21 to fund an artificial intelligence partnership. Since March, MRS has released 10 million tokens per month, with nearly $1 billion in tokens unlocked so far. Sui is scheduled to unlock 44 million tokens worth about $160 million on June 1. The tokens will go to the Mysten Labs treasury, early contributors and the community reserve. The largest portion, valued at more than $70 million, is allocated to Series B investors. To date, Sui has unlocked 3.3 billion tokens valued at over $12 billion, roughly 33% of its total supply. Tokenomist data shows another 5.22 billion tokens worth nearly $20 billion remain without a scheduled release date. Projects scheduled to unlock tokens in June Other tokens, including Fasttoken, Aptos, LayerZero (ZRO), ZKsync and Arbitrum also have vesting periods set to expire in June. Fasttoken will release 20 million tokens worth $88 million allocated to its founders, while LayerZero is scheduled to unlock 25 million tokens worth $71 million to its core contributors and strategic partners. Aptos is expected to release 11.31 million tokens worth $61 million to its core contributors, foundation, community and investors. ZKsync will release over 760 million tokens worth $49 million to its investors and team members. Source:
