Scientists Say A Major Earthquake Fault Line Is Waking Up
High up in Canada's Yukon Territory, a seismic gun is being cocked and aimed at the little community of Dawson City—population 1,600. If a new study in the journal Geophysical Research Letters is correct, that town or one of many others in the region could be rocked by a major earthquake pretty much at any moment. The source of the danger is a 1,000 km (620 mi.) formation known as the Tintina fault that cuts northwest across the Yukon and terminates in Alaska. It has been mostly still for the past 12,000 years but appears to be getting ready to lurch to life.
'Over the past couple of decades there have been a few small earthquakes of magnitude 3 to 4 detected along the Tintina Fault, but nothing to suggest it is capable of large ruptures,' said Theron Finley, a recent PhD graduate at Canada's University of Victoria and the lead author of the study, in a statement. That's not the full story, though, Finley says. What the last few decades suggest and what the geological record now shows are two different things—and according to the paper, Tintina is a lot more menacing than it seems.
What caught the interest of Finley and his colleagues is a 130-km (80 mi.) segment of the fault that runs near Dawson City, with surface features suggesting that numerous large earthquakes occurred in relatively recent geological history—during the Quaternary Period, which runs from 2.6 million years ago to the present. To get a better understanding, the researchers used an existing library of high-resolution imagery from airplanes, satellites, and drones, some of them captured by lidar—which uses pulsed laser emissions to produce 3D maps of the surface. This allowed them to study that stretch of the fault in unprecedented detail—and find a number of geological secrets hiding in plain sight.
At one point in the Tintina segment, they discovered a fault scarp—or a ridged crack in the surface—where the land broke and shifted by 1,000 m (3,280 ft.). That is a clear fingerprint of an earthquake, one that, according to the rounding and wear and sloping of the scarp, occurred about 2.6 million years ago. At another spot they found another scarp, misaligned by a more modest 75 m (250 ft.), that they estimate to have been caused by a smaller but still considerable quake that occurred about 132,000 years ago. No evidence of significant quakes turned up at any time in the past 12,000 years, meaning Tintina has been relatively stable throughout the entirety of the Holocene Epoch, which runs from 11,700 years ago to the present.
But for modern day folks living in Dawson and elsewhere, that recent period of quiescence is actually bad news. Just because a fault isn't causing quakes doesn't mean it isn't on the move. Finley and his colleagues estimate that Tintina is moving and accumulating strain on the order of 0.2 mm to 0.8 mm a year. Over the course of 12,000 years, those millimeters add up, and when the strain is suddenly released—which it ultimately must be—the result will not be pretty.
"We determined that future earthquakes on the Tintina fault could exceed magnitude 7.5,' said Finley in a statement. 'Based on the data, we think that the fault may be at a relatively late stage of a seismic cycle, having accrued a slip deficit, or build-up of strain, of six metres [20 ft] in the last 12,000 years. If this were to be released, it would cause a significant earthquake.'
The estimated 7.5 magnitude of the quake would put it on a scale with some of history's bigger temblors, including China's 1976 Tangshan event which claimed an estimated 240,000 to 650,000 lives; and the 2020 Haiti quake, which killed 300,000. The Yukon Territory is much more sparsely populated than Tangshen or Haiti, meaning fewer casualties. Still, there would quite likely be deaths, along with damage to local highways, mines, and other infrastructure. The area is also prone to landslides which could be triggered by a quake.
'Our results,' the researchers wrote, 'have significant implications for seismic hazard in the Yukon Territory and neighboring Alaska. If 12,000 years have elapsed since the last major earthquake, the fault may be at an advanced stage of strain accumulation.'
It is impossible to know exactly when that strain will be released, of course—one of the things that makes seismology such a confounding science. The best the scientists can do is warn locals of the long term risks and leave them to prepare go bags, survival kits, and evacuation plans. The Earth will quake at will; we can only react.

Scientists Reveal Secrets to Getting Your Cat to Love You

A study published in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior presented 413 participants with a questionnaire based on the Cat/Dog-Owner Relationship Scale, or C/DORS, which measures the quality of the bond between felines and their owners—the first of its kind conducted in Spain. Results found the quality of an owner-cat relationship is related to factors such as lifestyle, breed, time spent alone, type of housing, behavioral problems and the number of cats living together. Thirteen of the 22 variables affected the relationship between cats and humans, while nine did not. Owners, or future pet parents, should consider the following factors when wanting to strengthen their bond with their cats, according to the study. Owners who understand their cat's vocalizations and signals tend to report stronger bonds. Learning a cat's signals can help identify signs of pain, fear, stress and more. Purebred vs. Mixed Breeds The study found purebred cats have a more positive relationship than non-pedigree felines, also known as mixed breeds, due to their predictable behaviors from selective breeding practices and tracing their ancestry. They tend to be more interactive. However, mixed-breed cats are adaptable and low-maintenance. They are often considered more independent than purebreds. Acquisition of Cats Owners who adopted or picked up felines as strays resulted in a "superior level of owner-rated attachment" when compared to those who purchased cats. The authors believe this could be due to a strong emotional connection adopters feel. They take on a humanitarian responsibility. While those who purchase cats, usually from breeders or pet shops, generally seek a specific breed, age, size or temperament. Behavioral Issues A cat's behavior, when moderate or severe, can erode a bond with an owner. Problematic behaviors might include aggression, house soiling or activity throughout the night. The impact depends on how the owner perceives the behavior. Time Spent Together To strengthen the bond with your cat, consider the amount of time spent together. The study found that cats who are left alone for less than four hours have a higher-quality relationship with their humans. Home Impacts Based on the study's answers, cats who live in apartments have a higher quality relationship with their humans. This may be due to proximity, more shared space and frequent interaction—like sleeping in their owner's bed. Apartment-living cats also have a stronger bond because owners tend to purchase more toys, spend more time together, allow them to use household objects and even celebrate their birthdays. Multi-cat homes can also positively impact the relationship between them and their owners. Felines might feel less alone. Owners of more than one cat tend to be more invested, understanding their signals and communication. There tends to be more interaction and higher engagement. Owners should be aware of the potential anxiety and stress cats might experience when living with other pets. The study did not find a significant impact of indoor versus outdoor cats on the relationship between them and humans. Improving Bonds While the overall relationship between owners and cats from this population remained strong, with an average score of 78.78 out of 100 on relationship quality, there is always room for improvement. The study noted some factors, including a cat's breed, are unable to be changed once adopted or brought home. However, owners can increase bonding time, learn the way felines communicate and how to correctly deal with unwanted cat behaviors before they lead to a strain on the relationship.

Does sleeping on a problem really work?

Not only does your brain fill your slumber with dreams, it also goes right on solving the problems that plagued you during the day, often coming up with solutions by the time you wake up. The idea of sleeping on a problem and seeing if you can get some clarity in the morning is a common one, but is it scientifically sound? A growing body of research says yes. The latest piece of evidence that sleeping on a problem actually works comes courtesy of a small study recently published in the Journal of Neuroscience. A group of 25 people did a memorization task while wired up to an electroencephalograph (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) so the researchers could monitor which portions of their brains lit up as they worked. Everyone then took an afternoon nap, with brain sensors still in place. The researchers were looking for sleep spindles: bursts of activity that occur in the brain during a relatively light stage of sleep. The location of the spindles can provide a clue as to what kind of information the brain is consolidating and processing at any particular time. Spindle activity was especially high in the same areas of the brain that were used in the memorization task, and the greater the activity, the more people improved at the task when they tried it after the nap. 'Brain rhythms occur everywhere in the brain during sleep,' said Dara Manoach, professor of psychiatry at Harvard University Medical School and a coauthor of the study, in a statement that accompanied its release. 'But the rhythms in these regions increase after learning, presumably to stabilize and enhance memory.' Alyssa Sinclair, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, found something similar in a study published last year. After sleeping on a difficult task, people were more level-headed the next day. 'When we waited, when we let them sleep on it, they made somewhat more rational choices,' she says. 'They were no longer quite as drawn to evaluating events based solely on their first impressions.' This more measured take on things is due in large part to the region of the brain known as the hippocampus, which is responsible for processing short-term memories and, during sleep, for helping to determine which of those memories will be transferred to long-term storage and which will essentially be deleted. 'When we're asleep,' says Sinclair, 'the hippocampus is hard at work, consolidating those memories and experiences from throughout the day. It does this by replaying things that were important and pruning away the things that weren't.' Once it is done choosing the most relevant experiences, it transfers the keepers to the neocortex, where long-term memories are stored and integrated with existing memories. Those two brain regions do more than just file or trash information. They also analyze it—turning it this way and that and making connections that may not have been entirely obvious when we first encountered the information. It's during sleep that this process often takes place. 'Sleep is critical for problem-solving, creativity, and emotional regulation,' says Daniela Grimaldi, a research associate professor at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine. 'Deep sleep, also called slow-wave sleep…provides the optimal conditions for this memory transfer to occur efficiently, ensuring that important experiences and learning are preserved, while less critical information is filtered out.' 'Your mind engages in informational alchemy,' says Matthew Walker, professor of neuroscience at the University of California, Berkeley, and the author of the book Why We Sleep, 'reassembling memory fragments into a novel set of associations and colliding them with the back-catalogue of stored information.' Deep sleep is not the only phase that plays a role in problem-solving and memory consolidation. The lightest of the four phases of sleep, known as N1 (for non-rapid eye movement stage one), can also yield profound cognitive benefits. One 2023 study in Science Advances found that when people were presented with a complex math problem, they tripled their chances of solving it if they spent as little as 15 seconds in N1 sleep after being exposed to the problem. 'Our findings suggest that there is a creative sweet spot within the sleep-onset period,' the researchers wrote, 'and hitting it requires individuals balancing falling asleep easily against falling asleep too deeply.' The cognitive muscle work of creativity—of art and scientific research and philosophical insight—is all conducted by wide-awake thinkers. But when the lights go off and consciousness winks out, another, deeper process goes to work. 'Creative problem solving improves after a period of sleep,' says Sinclair, 'which helps us piece together those threads of what we've been thinking about, filter out irrelevant information, and come to a better conclusion when we wake up the next day.' It's possible to improve our chances of benefitting from all of that nocturnal work our brains are doing—if we know how. 'Dream memories vanish rapidly upon waking, making instant recording crucial,' says Walker. 'Keeping a dream journal or voice recorder bedside helps immensely. Upon waking, remain still with eyes closed for a moment, allowing dreams and insights to crystallize before the demands of daily life crowd them out.
