BJP demands rollback of Rs 250 garbage user fee in Bengaluru; calls it an excessive tax burden on residents.
BENGALURU: The BJP on Wednesday demanded the rollback of garbage user fee in the city. The Congress government has introduced Rs 250 fee for garbage management.
Speaking to reporters at BBMP, Opposition Leader R Ashoka criticized the government for burdening Bengaluru residents with excessive taxes.
'They (Congress) are devising a scheme to extract revenue from garbage. Congress has imposed the highest garbage tax in the country. While Kempegowda earned the title of Nadaprabhu for building the state, Congress leaders have earned the title of those who ruined it,' he said.
Previously, the city had a cess. Now, a user fee has been added alongside it. While the garbage tender is valued at Rs 147 crore, excessive fees are being collected from the public. With the user fee, the collection could reach Rs 500 to Rs 600 crore, he said.
'Either user fee or cess should be collected. The move will increase house rents, as well as rates for commercial buildings, marriage halls, hospitals, schools, and hotels. One tax will lead to an increase in all rates,' he said.
Ashoka accused the Congress of looting Bengaluru residents. 'They use the excuse of central government law, even though no central law mandates imposing two types of fees,' he said.
He urged the government to convene a meeting of Bengaluru MLAs to discuss this issue and alleged that such taxes are being collected to fund Congress's five guarantee schemes.

Bengaluru stampede: Sidda's political secretary sacked
Bengaluru: The political secretary of Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah, K Govindraju, has been sacked, and the state intelligence department head, Hemant Nimbalkar, has been transferred over the Bengaluru stampede that claimed 11 lives. PMK president Anbumani urges Stalin to order probe into ‘wage scam' in drainage board
TIRUNELVELI: PMK president Dr Anbumani Ramadoss on Friday urged CM MK Stalin to order an inquiry into the allegation of Rs 90 cr loot committed every year by officials and contractors of Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD ) Board who pay only 40% to 50% wages to workers. The TNIE carried a detailed report about the issue on Friday. In a post on his 'X' handle, Anbumani said it was condemnable that no action has been taken against those responsible for the scam, which has been going on for over 20 years. 'There is no greater crime or sin in the world than embezzling wages meant for contract workers. The Tamil Nadu government must order a fair inquiry into this scam. Those behind it must be identified,' he demanded. The PMK leader said, 'A total of 11,597 workers, including electricians, pumping operators, and maintenance assistants, are employed on a contract basis in the TWAD Board. Their wages are paid to the contractors, who then disburse it to the workers. The accusation is that contractors, who receive a minimum wage of Rs 15,401 or more per worker, pay only Rs 7,500 to Rs 9,800 and embezzle the remaining amount.'
