Kieran Tierney gives Arsenal final-day victory

Glasgow Times26-05-2025

No side in the competition had ever lost 30 in a season but Martin Odegaard's drilled finish into the corner in the 89th minute sent them back to the Championship with a final humiliation to go with their meagre 12-point tally, on the day that new boss Will Still was unveiled to home fans.
The outgoing manager of Lens in Ligue 1 watched his new team from the stands and will have been encouraged when Ross Stewart scored his first goal for the club to equalise against the side that a for a third year in a row finished second.
For Mikel Arteta, seated nearby as he served a one-match ban, he was left to reflect on a campaign in which his side fell 17 points short of last season's tally.
It will not have escaped Arteta that the 89 points the Gunners finished with 12 months ago would have been comfortably enough to win this season's title.
In the end, far too many drawn matches and poor discipline – no team in the league received more than Arsenal's six red cards – had cost them.
Raheem Sterling almost marked what was likely to be his final Arsenal appearance with a first league goal for the club after seven minutes, swinging a shot just wide after seven minutes. The Chelsea loanee's future remains uncertain but it appears unlikely to include another year at the Emirates.
Southampton wanted a penalty when Yuki Sugawara's drive was deflected behind off the arm of Declan Rice. Arsenal may have been fortunate that VAR concurred with referee Darren Bond's on-field decision of no hand ball.
Mikel Merino then headed Gabrielle Martinelli's cross against the bar as visiting fans were taunted with chants of 'Tottenham Hotspur, they've won more than you.'
A wonderful first touch from Martinelli saw him bring down a high ball over the top before bringing an equally impressive save from former teammate Aaron Ramsdale, then from the resulting corner Oleksandr Zinchenko shot inches wide.
Arsenal's pressure was mounting and a minute later they broke through. Ben White's low cross from the right was beautifully pitched, and there at the near post sweeping across the ball from five yards out was Tierney who tapped in his first league goal since Boxing Day 2021 to the delight of travelling fans.
There had been no great gulf between the teams in the first half despite the chasm that divided them in the table, and so Saints' equaliser 10 minutes after the break was far from undeserved.
Mateus Fernandes' corner was delivered into a crowded six-yard box where Stewart rose powerfully above two defenders to head the ball back over his own shoulder and in past the dive of David Raya.
A wonderful block from Charlie Taylor denied Zinchenko as he unleashed a bullet from 12 yards, Bukayo Saka was denied a final-day goal by the offside flag, but Arsenal would have the final say, Odegaard sidestepping Will Smallbone and lashing in the winner to send his side out with a win.

Next Rangers manager: Why intellectual Russell Martin would be 'positive thing' for Ibrox club

Scotland goalkeeper Angus Gunn has endorsed former teammate Russell Martin as a good fit for Rangers after it emerged that the 39-year-old is close to being appointed as the Ibrox club's new head coach. Reports emerged on Tuesday lunchtime that Rangers are poised to appoint Martin as their next manager. The ex-Scotland internationalist - who had a brief spell on loan in Govan - has always been one of chief candidates since Philippe Clement was sacked back in February and with the search nearing its conclusion following last week's takeover and new sporting director Kevin Thelwell taking office on Monday, it appears an appointment is imminent. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Thelwell and new chairman Andrew Cavenagh have been tasked with landing their next boss and Martin, who has been out of the dugout since being sacked by Southampton last December, is understood to have been in competition with former Real Madrid assistant boss Davide Ancelotti for the role. Russell Martin has emerged as the leading candidate for Rangers' managerial vacancy. | Getty Images Should the appointment come to fruition, one of his former teammates in Gunn believes "intellectual" Martin has the tools to succeed at Rangers. The pair played together at Norwich in 2017 and the centre-half's leadership skills stood out for the goalkeeper. 'There were a few other players in that dressing room – Steven Naismith was there as well – and you can tell on the pitch when you're playing with players,' said Gunn. 'They kind of start coaching whilst they're still playing, if you like, sort of organising on the pitch. 'Russell was one of them, but it wasn't just on the pitch, it was off the pitch as well, where he had close relationships with everyone. Even though he wasn't a regular playing in the team, he was always on hand and always upbeat and a good person to go to. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'He helped me massively' 'Obviously, I only worked with him as a player at Norwich but he's a very intellectual guy. I went in there as a young goalkeeper and he helped me massively, even though he wasn't in the team every week and playing regularly. He was the captain of the club and he had good relationships with everyone in the dressing room. 'Obviously, watching what he's done at Southampton, I thought he'd done incredibly well there and probably was unfortunate to lose his job there because it's always difficult for teams coming up from the Championship to even compete with some of the Premier League teams,' said the goalkeeper. 'With the way he wants to play and his philosophy, I really hope whatever he goes on to do in his career is successful. Obviously he had a spell at Rangers, so he kind of knows the club a little bit. I think it would be a really good thing for Rangers. Angus Gunn played briefly with Russell Martin at Norwich City. | Getty Images "As a manager, he showed what he can do, not only with Southampton but with Swansea as well. He took a team that wasn't expected to do much quite far into the Championship as well. I think it will be a positive thing for Rangers. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Gunn played against Martin's Southampton team two years ago en route to the Saints' promotion from the Championship and he recalled: "They were a tough team. I think we had a couple of good games against them. One was 4-3, one was 0-0, so quite contrasting. "We've seen the evolution of their team throughout the season. I think when we first played them, they were quite open. Then, when we played them again, they were a little bit pragmatic.

Russell Martin has agreed a deal in principle to become the next head coach of Rangers with an appointment expected before the weekend. The Scotsman understands that, barring any last minute hitches, the former Scotland international will become Philippe Clement's successor following more positive talks over the last 24 hours. It will mark a return to Ibrox for the 39-year-old ex-defender, who spent six months on loan at Rangers from Norwich City in the second half of the 2017-18 season. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Martin has been one of the leading candidates throughout the recruitment process, which has accelerated this week following the completion of a takeover of the club by an American consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises. The search for a head coach has been spearheaded by newly-installed sporting director Kevin Thelwell and Greitar Steinsson, technical director for 49ers Enterprises. (Photo by Andrew Matthews/PA Wire) Davide Ancelotti had also been in the frame but talks between the new Rangers regime and the son of Carlo Ancelotti, who was his father's assistant at Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Napoli and Everton, appear to have broken down in recent days. Martin has been out of work since being sacked by Southampton in December. He led Saints to promotion via the Championship play-offs last May but managed only one victory and 13 defeats in 16 Premier League matches. He has also previously managed Swansea City and MK Dons, where he became renowned for a possession-based brand of football. Martin will sign a three-year deal until June 2028 with long term assistant boss Matty Gill joining him at Ibrox, while former Rangers full-back Maurice Ross is also reportedly lined up for a coaching role. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Many Rangers fans have expressed dismay over Martin's imminent arrival but he has been backed to be a success at Ibrox by his former Norwich manager, Chris Hughton. (Photo by) | Getty Images Speaking on talkSPORT, Hughton said: 'If I'm looking at Russell's managerial background, he is known of course, for playing a certain way, very expansive in the way that he wants to play, very much a passing game and progression through the thirds. 'But he's a strong personality also. He's had a few knockbacks in his football career so far. 'I think any knockbacks, he will look at very much as experience and look to improve in every aspect that he can. I saw him recently, and he was in good form and really looking forward to getting back into the game. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'I think he's had a few offers. So this is somebody that's still very respected in the game, and of course, the rollercoaster in management, there are always going to be ups and downs, but he's a very confident individual and very confident in what he wants to do on the football pitch. 'He was very much a leader in the changing room, vocal in the meetings that we had and, of course, he was my voice when it came to any sort of direction on the players. 'So no surprise to me that he eventually went into management. He always showed those characteristics. And he was somebody that, as he improved in his career as a player, is of course very much looking to improve the same way in management.'

Ally McCoist has told Rangers' new owners that a managerial appointment must be made as soon as possible after Russell Martin emerged as the leading candidate for the vacancy. Reports emerged on Tuesday that Rangers are poised to appoint Martin as their next manager. The ex-Scotland internationalist – who had a brief spell on loan in Govan – has always been on the radar since Philippe Clement was sacked back in February and an appointment now appears imminent. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Rangers fell under new ownership last week with a US consortium led by Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises, the investment arm of the San Francisco 49ers, taking control of the club. Russell Martin has emerged as the leading candidate for Rangers' managerial vacancy. | Getty Images Cavenagh, who has taken up the role of chairman, and newly appointed sporting director Kevin Thelwell are leading the managerial recruitment process but with only 19 days until Rangers return for pre-season training, and a Champions League second qualifying round tie set for mid-July, McCoist has urged the new board to get the new man in place pronto. The prospect of Martin's possible arrival has prompted a mixed reaction among Rangers fans with concerns raised over his performance with Southampton in the Premier League last season, where he oversaw just one victory and 13 defeats from 16 games before being sacked in December. Martin had previously led Southampton to promotion via the Championship play-offs following spells in charge of Swansea and MK Dons. McCoist was asked for his take on the potential arrival of Martin by talkSPORT host Alan Brazil. When put to him that Martin would be an "underwhelming" choice among Rangers fans, McCoist replied. "He [Russell Martin)] came up for a while - but that is the term that was used, underwhelming.
