Macron calls for sanctions against Russia if diplomacy fails
Mr Emmanuel Macron said that he hoped Russia and Ukraine would resume contact 'in the coming days'.
WASHINGTON - French President Emmanuel Macron called on Aug 18 for stepping up sanctions against Russia if its leader Vladimir Putin does not move forward on peace with Ukraine.
'President Trump believes we can get an agreement and believes that President Putin also wants a peace accord,' Mr Macron told reporters after talks at the White House.
'But if at the end this process is met by refusal, we are also ready to say that we need to increase sanctions.'
He pointed to
recent secondary sanctions imposed by the Trump administration on India, which has emerged as a major buyer of Russian energy as Western nations cut back due to sanctions following Mr Putin's invasion of Ukraine.
The secondary sanctions on India have 'had a lot of effects,' Mr Macron said.
Mr Trump invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the White House three days after the
US president welcomed Mr Putin for talks in Alaska .
Over the weekend, Mr Trump publicly again pressured Ukraine to concede territory, siding with Mr Putin and not Mr Zelensky, who has insisted on defending all territory which Russia has taken by force.

Asked by reporters if Mr Trump had said that concessions were necessary before any US security guarantees to Ukraine, Mr Macron said, 'No, that wasn't discussed at all. We're well away from that.'
He said that Mr Trump and the European leaders also agreed that there can be no restrictions on the size of Ukraine's military in a future deal with Russia.
All the leaders meeting in Washington support a 'robust Ukrainian army that can resist any attempted attack.'
Mr Macron said that he hoped Russia and Ukraine would resume contact 'in the coming days' with a potential three-way summit involving Mr Trump, Mr Putin and Mr Zelensky 'in two to three weeks.'
However, Finnish president Alexander Stubb who was also at the White House with Mr Trump, Mr Macron and other European leaders, said Mr Putin was not trustworthy.
'Putin is rarely to be trusted. So now it remains to be seen whether he has the courage to come to this type of meeting. Does he have the courage to come to a trilateral meeting, or is he once again playing for time?' he said. AFP

SINGAPORE - The National Day Parade (NDP) in 2026 will be held at the National Stadium, Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing said on Aug 19. This means that more Singaporeans will be able to watch the parade, as the 55,000-seat stadium has a larger capacity than the Padang, which can accommodate 27,000 spectators. The NDP was last held at the new National Stadium in 2016 - the only time it was held there. It will also commemorate 50 years since the NDP was first held at the old National Stadium, said the Ministry of Defence (Mindef). To mark Singapore's 60th year of independence in 2025, some 27,000 people attended the National Day Parade at the Padang on Aug 9, while another 200,000 enjoyed the extended celebrations at Marina Bay . In July 2022, Mr Ng Eng Hen, who was Defence Minister then, hinted that future NDPs could be held at the National Stadium . Mr Chan, who was speaking at an NDP 2025 appreciation function held at the Surbana Jurong Campus in Cleantech Loop on Aug 19, said: 'We were last there almost 10 years back... During the appreciation function, Mr Chan gave out awards to 148 principal partners and 33 gold award recipients for their contributions to NDP 2025. Netanyahu's comment followed Israel's revocation of the visas of Australian diplomats to the Palestinian Authority on Monday, after a decision by Canberra to recognise a Palestinian state and cancel the visa of an Israeli lawmaker. "History will remember Albanese for what he is: A weak politician who betrayed Israel and abandoned Australia's Jews," Netanyahu said on the official prime minister's X account in English. The Israeli lawmaker had been due to meet with Australia's Jewish community, which has faced a sharp rise in antisemitic attacks since the beginning of Israel's war with Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza, almost two years ago. Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong on Monday called Israel's visa revocation counter-step an "unjustified reaction" and said Netanyahu's government was increasing Israel's diplomatic isolation. Malaysia scraps plans to buy Black Hawk helicopters derided by King as ‘flying coffins'

Malaysia has scrapped its plans to purchase four ageing Black Hawk helicopters after its King Sultan Ibrahim Iskandar alluded to them as 'flying coffins', according to media reports. Malaysian Armed Forces chief, General Mohd Nizam Jaffar, said it was the King's strongly worded take on the issue – delivered on the 60th anniversary of Malaysia's Special Service Regiment on Aug 16 – that tilted the balance. 'We will not propose (the procurement of) Black Hawk and have taken heed of His Majesty's concerns,' he was quoted as saying in a report that first appeared in the Malay-language daily Utusan Malaysia on Aug 19. According to p revious reports, Malaysia signed a deal in May 2023 to lease four Sikorsky UH-60A+ Black Hawk helicopters from local supplier Aerotree Defence and Services for RM187 million (S$57 million) over five years. Malaysia's Ministry of Defence issued a notice to cancel the order in November 2024, after Aerotree failed to deliver the first helicopter as agreed in October 2024, according to media reports. The ministry, however, later issued a new contract – published in August 2025 – that supposedly included the helicopters, Malaysian news outlet Malay Mail reported. Out of 88 that were acquired, only 40 of these Vietnam War-era warplanes were refurbished and put into service. The state news agency Bernama reported that the jets were later retired due to a high accident rate. 'Are we going to put our pilots in 'flying coffins'?' said Sultan Ibrahim on Aug 16, of the Black Hawk helicopters. He said purchasing snafus happen 'because the Defence Ministry is full of agents or former generals who have become salesmen'. 'We even have textile firms wanting to sell us drones,' he said. Sultan Ibrahim said the Defence Ministry should not 'waste time purchasing nonsense that does not fit the military's needs', and that there is a need to review its procurement process, 'in terms of pricing'. 'Several steps must be taken before determining the best acquisition method and expediting the process,' he was quoted as saying by the news outlet New Straits Times. He said those deciding on military acquisitions must be transparent and should not rely solely on agents and middlemen.
