Gary Lineker signs new media deal ahead of the Club World Cup just weeks after former Match of the Day host's BBC exit
Gary Lineker has a struck a deal with a new broadcaster for the Club World Cup on the heels of leaving his role as Match of the Day host with the BBC last month.
The England legend had worked on the broadcaster's flagship football programme for 26 years, but called time on his tenure at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.
Lineker was initially earmarked to continue working with the BBC through to the 2026 World Cup, and had plans to front the organisation's coverage in one year's time, but announced with just days to go before his final programme that he would be stepping back for good after becoming embroiled in a controversial row over antisemitism.
The pundit had shared a social media post about Zionism which included a rat emoji -a visual slur which has links to Nazism's comparisons between Jewish people and vermin.
Lineker announced in his apology message that leaving the BBC for good was the 'responsible course of action', adding that he '(recognised) the error and upset that (he) had caused'.
The former Tottenham star also strenuously denied that he would ever 'consciously repost anything antisemitic'.
But just two weeks after the end of the season, Lineker has signed a new contract as part of his Goalhanger Podcasts media conglomerate.
As per a statement shared on Tuesday, Lineker has inked a deal for his The Rest is Football podcast to work closely with the tournament's broadcaster DAZN.
The podcast will feature 'licensed match footage within the show', with Lineker and co-hosts Micah Richards and Alan Shearer proving pre-match previews and other tailored content.
Pete Oliver, chief executive of growth markets at DAZN lauded the podcast as part of the announcement, stating that it was 'essential viewing and listening for fans who want insight, entertainment and personality.'
The deal, he added, is 'about connecting global football with the voices fans trust and love, and showing the tournament in a fresh, exciting, and authentically British way.'
Tony Pastor, Lineker's co-founder added: 'Partnering with DAZN to bring official match clips into the mix is the natural next step - adding energy, context, and taking the conversation to the next level.
'With over six million episode views and listens each month, and huge engagement across social, it's already the UK's most popular sports podcast.'
Lineker's latest news will come as a boost after it was revealed that one of the projects he had planned as part of his BBC farewell was abruptly cancelled.
Lineker was believed to be primed for a sit-down with Salah, but the interview was reportedly cancelled without warning amid fears that he would discuss the ongoing conflict in the Middle East with the Premier League title-winner.
A source shared that the interview as set to be shared across his final weekend, but the threat that Gaza might have 'come up naturally in conversation' saw it cancelled 'out of nowhere'.
The BBC were contacted for comment by Mail Sport and shared the following statement: 'The interview was cancelled because it planned to air after Gary's last Match of the Day.
'It would be wrong to suggest anything else.'

Michael Mosley's family reflect on one year since TV doctor's death
Mosley, who died aged 67 while on holiday with his wife Dr Clare Bailey Mosley on the Greek island of Symi last year, was known for popularising diets and fronting science programmes. His wife wrote on Instagram: 'It's hard to believe that a year has passed since we lost Michael. Not a day goes by without thinking of him – his warmth, his laughter, his endless curiosity about the world, and his deep love for our family. 'This past year has been the hardest of our lives. Navigating the loss of someone so central to our hearts and our home has changed everything. We have missed him in the big moments and the small ones. But we have also felt incredibly supported. 'The outpouring of love, stories and memories from so many of you has meant more than we can ever say. We have taken real comfort in knowing just how many lives Michael touched – not only through his work, but through his kindness, humour, and deep desire to help people live well for longer.' The message thanked 'everyone who has reached out, shared their grief, and carried us with their compassion, thank you. Your messages, letters and acts of remembrance have helped us through the darkest days.' It continued: 'We are trying, as a family to look forward. To carry on the work Michael was so passionate about. To live with purpose and joy, as he would have wanted us to.' 'With love and deepest gratitude, Clare and the Mosley family.' Last month, the family set up a research project to honour his memory, announcing that a new clinical research fellowship will be established in partnership with King's College London and the Chronic Disease Research Foundation (CDRF) to help improve the nation's metabolic health. The Mosleys have been working with King's College London and the CDRF, who will administer the Michael Mosley Memorial Research Fund, to appoint a dedicated research scientist. Mosley, known for fronting BBC and Channel 4 documentaries on health and diet, popularised the 5:2 diet, a form of intermittent fasting, through his book The Fast Diet. Michael Mosley died in 2024 (BBC/PA) His son Dr Jack Mosley, a GP registrar, who researched GLP-1 drug brands including Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound with his father, has also written a book titled Food Noise: How Weight Loss Medication And Smart Nutrition Can Silence Your Cravings. In December, a coroner said Mosley's death was 'indeterminate' and 'unascertainable', adding that it 'was most likely attributable either to heatstroke (accidental) or non-identified pathological cause'. Mosley had presented BBC Radio 4's Just One Thing, and the BBC series Trust Me, I'm A Doctor, which looked at healthcare in Britain. He would regularly push his body during various programmes, and in a 2014 documentary he ingested tapeworms for six weeks. In a 2015 programme he made two black puddings out of his own blood to showcase its nutritional value. The BBC honoured the doctor-turned-science broadcaster with a day dedicated to him in July 2024, when presenters and audiences where encouraged to do 'just one thing' to improve their wellbeing. His wife Clare accepted the Hall of Fame Award at the British Podcast Awards on his behalf in September 2024.

Trevoh Chalobah hoping his England career lasts longer than brother Nathaniel's
The Chelsea defender has received his maiden call-up for Thomas Tuchel's squad for forthcoming games against Andorra and Senegal following a successful season. He will be hoping to get on the pitch in the World Cup qualifier against the minnows in Barcelona on Saturday or the City Ground friendly against the African side three days later. His sibling Nathaniel, who currently plays for Sheffield Wednesday, won his one and only England cap in a Nations League win over Spain in 2018, appearing for six minutes and 54 seconds as a late substitute. And Trevoh is hoping that this is just the start for him. The 25-year-old said: 'When I found out I phoned my dad, spoke to my family, let them know, and they were over the moon for me also. And my older brother as well, Nathaniel. He was happy for me also. 'Obviously, him being here also, and to see his younger brother do the same, it was a very proud moment for him. And hopefully I can be here even more. 'It's been a journey for my parents. Obviously, they've seen the highs and lows, and they've been there every single step of the way. It's a good moment for them to share.' Nathaniel Chalobah, left, made his only appearance for England against Spain in 2018 (Nick Potts/PA) Chalobah is one of five Chelsea players in the squad and he knows boss Tuchel well as the German handed him his Stamford Bridge debut. It has been an impressive season for Chalobah as he starred on loan at Crystal Palace before returning to Chelsea to help the Blues to Conference League glory and Champions League qualification, with a trip to the United States for the Club World Cup still to come. He added: 'Individually for me, it's been a very good season. This has been one of my goals, and it's good to share with the Chelsea players. 'It just shows the quality that Chelsea produce and the players, it's good to be here with them also and share that moment. 'They've obviously eased me in here and helped me. As I said, it just shows the quality and the players Chelsea are producing this over the years, it's been amazing. 'I'm here, being called up to England, and it's going to keep carrying on hopefully.' While most of the England squad will be heading on holiday after the Senegal match, Chalobah and his Chelsea team-mates will be going to the US for the revamped Club World Cup. He said: 'This is the time after the internationals you probably want a holiday. But it's going to be physically tough, it's a different environment. 'But it's important, us as players want to be competing at the highest level and playing against very good teams. This is what footballers want to be doing, and hopefully getting a trophy.'
