
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh approves AMCA execution model through industry partnership
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the execution model for the under development indigenous fifth generation fighter jet, the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), with the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) to execute the programme through industry partnership. Speeding up the development and induction of AMCA has become critical since China has already fielded two fifth gen fighters and is set to supply 40 J-35s to Pakistan, and especially so after the military confrontation under Operation Sindoor.

The AMCA project, the country's only fifth gen fighter programme, received approval from the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) in March 2024 at an approximate cost of ₹15,000 Crore as a 25-tonne twin engine stealth aircraft
'The execution model approach provides equal opportunities to both private and public sectors on competitive basis. They can bid either independently or as joint venture or as consortia. The entity/bidder should be an Indian company compliant with the laws and regulations of the country,' a Defence Ministry statement said.
As reported by The Hindu earlier, the design of AMCA is ready and the first prototype is expected to roll out by 2028-29 and production is expected to begin from 2032-33. The target is to have the aircraft ready for induction in 2034.
This is an important step towards harnessing the indigenous expertise, capability and capacity to develop the AMCA prototype, which will be a major milestone towards Aatmanirbharta in the aerospace sector, the Ministry said adding that ADA will shortly issue an Expression of Interest (EoI) for the AMCA development phase.
AMCA will feature internal weapons bay and diverterless supersonic intake which has been developed in India for the first time with an internal carriage of 1,500 kg of payload and 5,500 kg of external payload with 6,500 kg of internal fuel. Officials had stated earlier that Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) will be the lead production agency with significant involvement of the private sector to speed up the project.
Two-phases development
Development of AMCA is planned to be carried out in two phases, a MK1 with the General Electric F-414 engine and a Mk2 with a more powerful engine planned to be co-developed in partnership with Saran of France for which discussions have been under way over the last few years. The F-414 engine is the same that will power the under-development Light Combat Aircraft (LCA)-Mk2 that was sanctioned in September 2022. A deal to licence-manufacture the F-414 in India by HAL is in advanced states of conclusion.
While the indigenous LCA programme is critical in addressing the falling fighter squadron strength of the Indian Air Force (IAF), the AMCA project is critical to maintain the technological edge and will be the mainstay of the IAF in future. China, which has made great progress in the development and deployment of FGFAs, has deployed its twin-engine J-20 FGFA in Tibet bordering India and recently unveiled an advanced prototypes of its fifth generation fighters.
A report to the US Congress on the military and security developments involving the PRC for 2024 noted that the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force and PLA Navy Aviation together constitute the largest aviation force in the Indo-Pacific region.
The PLAAF and PLAN Aviation continue to field greater numbers of fourth-generation aircraft (now more than 1,300 of 1,900 total fighters, not including trainers) and probably will become a majority fourth-generation force in the next several years, the report added. In addition, J35 and J-20 are being added at a phenomenal rate and flight testing of the latest jets indicates a fairly advanced state and that they have been under development for sometime.

Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan's interviews to news agencies Reuters and Bloomberg on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue security forum in Singapore shed new light on combat operations during Operation Sindoor, going beyond the media briefings by the Indian Armed Forces during the hostilities. First, General Chauhan's remark about initial losses in the air, without going into details or giving a count of aircraft lost, is the first official admission of fighter jets being downed in combat operations. Asked by Bloomberg if the Pakistani claim of downing six Indian jets was correct, the CDS said: 'Absolutely incorrect.' The remarks came exactly three weeks after India and Pakistan agreed on cessation of military strikes against each other. To be clear, at no point, during and after the hostilities, did the IAF ever deny losing any aircraft. On May 11, a day after the two militaries reached a truce, Air Marshal A K Bharti, Director of Air Operations, responding to a question at a media briefing, said he would not like to comment on whether India lost any aircraft and cited the prevailing combat situation. He said losses were part of any combat, and the Indian military had achieved all its selected objectives and all IAF pilots were back home. Air Marshal Bharti said the Pakistan Air Force lost 'a few' aircraft, apart from suffering massive damage to assets and air bases during retaliatory high-precision strikes by Indian Armed Forces during the operation. General Chauhan, while acknowledging Indian losses in the air, underlined that what was more important was why these losses (of aircraft) occurred, and what India did after that. He spoke of how 'we rectified tactics and then went back… in large numbers' to 'hit air bases deep inside Pakistan, penetrated all their air defences with impunity, carried out precision strikes'. He told Reuters that the IAF 'flew all types of aircraft with all types of ordnances on the 10th' of May, the day India struck air bases deep inside Pakistan, including the Nur Khan air base in Rawalpindi. He spoke on similar lines to Bloomberg: 'What is important is not the jet being down, but why they were being (downed),' General Chauhan said. 'The good part is that we were able to understand the tactical mistake which we made, remedy it, rectify it and then implement it again after two days… flew all our jets again, targeting at long range,' he said. Significantly, the CDS also told Reuters that although Pakistan is closely allied with China, there was no sign of any actual help from Beijing during the conflict. 'While this was unfolding from (April) 22nd onwards, we didn't find any unusual activity in the operational or tactical depth of our northern borders, and things were generally all right,' he said.

India to soon have 5th-generation indigenous stealth fighter jet AMCA
The government has approved the "execution model" for implementing a major indigenous project to develop India's fifth-generation, deep-penetration Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) for the Air Force, potentially making India the fourth country to possess such stealth fighter jets. AMCA is an ambitious next-generation project aimed at developing a fifth-generation stealth, multirole combat aircraft for both the Air Force and the Navy. The single-seat, twin-engine aircraft is designed for all-weather operations and is expected to have a maximum takeoff weight of around 25 tonnes. It will be capable of flying at altitudes of up to 55,000 feet.
