Sly Stone's Music Formed The Backdrop To Several Hip-Hop Classics
Sly Stone, a legendary musician who helped propel funk to its elevated heights in the realm of Black music, has died. Hip-Hop artists of various eras have sampled Sly Stone's work over the years, and we've got a playlist highlighting some of those audio classics. As Hip-Hop Wired reported earlier, Sly Stone, born Sylvester Stewart in Denton, Texas, passed away Monday (June 9) at the age of 82. After establishing his roots in the Bay Area as a musical prodigy, Stone ventured into becoming a front-facing artist with his Sly and The Stones in the 1960s with the late Cynthia Robinson, the trumpeter who was a founding member of Sly and the Family Stone, the band that catapulted Stone into the annals of music history. Alongside fun pioneers such asJames Brown and Parliament-Funkadelic, Stone and his band enjoyed a successful run of album releases extending into the late 1970s. Stone's life was captured in the 2023 biography, Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin), written with Ben Greenman, featuring a foreword from Ahmir 'Questlove' Thompson. Thompson also produced the stirring 2025 documentary centered on Stone's life and legacy, Sly Lives! (aka the Burden of Black Genius) . Hip-Hop artists such as LL Cool J, Queen Latifah, The Jungle Brothers, Public Enemy, and scores more dug into the crates to grab bits of Stone's music to form the backdrop of their works. Immigration raids confirmed in Orange County, congressman says ICE is ‘inciting fear'
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids took place in Orange County on Monday, officials confirmed. 'We are aware of ongoing immigration enforcement activity in the Santa Ana Civic Center area,' announced the Santa Ana Unified School District in an X post Monday evening. 'We do not condone actions that disrupt our community or separate families.' The Santa Ana Police Department and city officials also issued a joint statement on Instagram, acknowledging the ICE activity and stating that they are aware the news causes 'fear and uncertainty' for community members. L.A. Protests: Live Updates A spokesperson for the police department told KTLA that they were made aware of the ICE activity in their city because of 'social media posts.' SAPD, similar to most other police departments in Southern California, has reinstated its policy of not participating in immigration enforcement efforts. Although federal or law enforcement officials have not revealed the specifics of the ICE raids, Rep. Lou Correa (D-Orange County) said he received reports that individuals in his district were being arrested for 'doing nothing but standing outside and being profiled.' Upon landing in Washington, D.C. on Monday, Rep. Correa issued a statement about the raids, saying, 'It's unacceptable, and shocking, that this is happening in my hometown of Santa Ana.' 'It appears agents are picking up hard-working, law-abiding taxpayers. Why?' read Rep. Correa's press release, which also shared that the congressman would be immediately returning to O.C. 'Yesterday, everything was good and boring in Santa Ana. Everyone was going to church and going to the grocery store—it was a beautiful day. Today ICE is coming in to raid and disrupt our neighborhood? These are the parents whose children went to school with my kids. They take care of our elderly, mow our lawns, and are a part of the fourth largest economy in the world. This is inciting fear in our community,' continued the release. Rep. Correa also urged those who resist 'unjust, illegal activity' to do so peacefully, referring to the lessons taught by Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. Glendale terminates 'divisive' detainee holding contract with ICE 'You don't take on a tank or an M16 by walking into it—you do it in a smart, legal, and safe way. Our future depends on a strategic, effective response. One that protects our kids, their future, and their rights.' The congressman concluded his statement by asking the federal government to use restraint and 'common sense' to adhere to the Constitution and provide everyone with due process. In a Monday evening press conference with Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, she shared these values, saying, 'Stop the raids, and give the power back to our Governor.' SAUSD offered resources to the community, advising individuals to contact their local school or visit if they or someone they know needs support or information. 'We stand with our community – today and always.' The city of Santa Ana also provided resources, saying, 'If you or someone you know has questions or concerns, contact your local Congressional office and visit the City's Know Your Rights webpage at for resources and information.' Home of Seattle rapper Macklemore invaded, nanny maced: police
The Brief The home of Seattle rapper Macklemore was broken into and raided over the weekend while a nanny and three children were inside. The suspects allegedly sprayed the nanny with bear mace and stole valuables before fleeing the home. It's unclear if this incident is linked to other celebrity home break-ins in Seattle, with the investigation ongoing. SEATTLE - The home of Seattle rapper Macklemore was invaded over the weekend, Seattle police confirmed. A nanny looking over three children inside the home was maced and assaulted by two suspects, who ransacked the home of its valuables, according to the police report. What we know Two men allegedly entered Macklemore's residence through an unlocked patio door around 12:30 a.m. Saturday, and sprayed the nanny in the face with bear mace. The nanny told officers one of the suspects helped her clean the mace from her eyes before saying, "where are the jewels, bi—h?" Police say they then grabbed the nanny's arm as she led them around the house, where they raided various rooms and closets, getting away with numerous watches, jewelry and shoes they put into bags. At one point, the nanny said the men threw her to the ground and took her phone while assaulting her. She was able to escape after biting one of the suspect's hands, escaping through a bathroom, and fleeing to several neighbors' homes until someone allowed her inside to call police, according to the report. The incident happened after the nanny put three kids to sleep in their beds. The children were safely extracted after officers arrived and cleared the home. The nanny described the suspects as two Black males, one "taller one" and a "shorter one," wearing all black, face masks, gloves and tactical vests. This home invasion shares similarities to a series of other break-ins at the homes of several high-profile athletes in the Seattle area. Police recently arrested Earl Henderson Riley IV,the leader of a burglary ring that targeted pro athletes like Richard Sherman, Blake Snell and Luis Castillo. While the ringleader is in jail, his two accomplices remain on the loose, and court documents state they left behind bear spray in the home invasion of Seattle Mariners star Julio Rodriguez's home. What we don't know It's unclear if Seattle police believe this incident is related to the other series of celebrity home break-ins. The investigation is ongoing.
