UFC on ESPN 68 loses welterweight bout 10 days out from event
Eleven days out from its next event, the UFC is in search of a welterweight fill-in.
UFC on ESPN 68 takes place May 31 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. One fighter that won't be competing on the card is Jeremiah Wells, who withdrew from his fight vs. Andreas Gustafsson.
Two people with knowledge of the situation recently informed MMA Junkie of the change, but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement. Octagon Update first reported the news Tuesday.
It's unclear why Wells (12-4-1 MMA, 4-2 UFC) withdrew from the bout. Prior to its cancellation, Wells lost back-to-back fights to Carlston Harris and Max Griffin. He has not competed since February 2024.
Sweden's Gustafsson (11-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC) impressed the UFC brass on Dana White's Contender Series in 2024 when he mutilated and finished Pat Pytlik inside two rounds. All but one of Gustafsson's wins have come inside the distance and he currently rides a three-fight winning streak.
With the change, the UFC on ESPN 68 lineup includes:

UFC on ESPN 72 video: Christian Leroy Duncan spins, TKOs Eryk Anders in first
Christian Leroy Duncan was relentless to the finish 😤 #UFCVegas106 Christian Leroy Duncan was simply too dynamic for Eryk Anders. In the main card opener of UFC on ESPN 72, Duncan (12-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) found a way to take out a very durable Anders (17-9 MMA, 9-9 UFC) in the opening round of their middleweight bout. The official stoppage time of the TKO was 3:53. Duncan was relentless from the start. He came forward, offering a variety of striking techniques to keep Anders guessing. It wasn't all clean, though. Duncan poked Anders in the eye accidentally and landed an inside leg kick a little too inside. Neither foul stopped Duncan from putting heavy pressure on Anders. A spinning back elbow connected to rock Anders, and Duncan swarmed with punches to put the finishing touches on the opening-round TKO. Check out video of the finish below (via X): With the win, Duncan makes it two in a row. In his first appearance of the year, he won a unanimous decision over Andrey Pulyaev. For Anders, the result halted his momentum of back-to-back wins over Jamie Pickett and former champ Chris Weidman. Up-to-the-minute UFC on ESPN 72 results:

UFC Vegas 109: Elijah Smith scores brutal slam KO, sends opponent Toshiomi Kazama to the hospital
Elijah Smith and gravity combined for the most brutal knockout of UFC Vegas 109. Facing Toshiomi Kazama in the prelims, the bantamweight scored the 15th slam knockout in UFC history on Saturday, picking up his opponent and slamming him down head first onto the floor. Kazama appeared unconscious after the impact, but Smith still two more hard punches to the head before referee Chris Tognoni stepped in to end the fight. Kazama remained motionless for multiple minutes after. Kazama was still down when the official result was announced, but managed to leave the Octagon under his own power after that. Per the UFC broadcast, Kazama was taken to the trauma center of the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada for treatment. Smith had been the biggest favorite on the card, but he was actually closer to disaster than the end made it seem. As ESPN's Daniel Cormier noted, Kazama had him in a triangle hold before the slam, which is how he won his previous fight against Charalampos Grigoriou. If the slam landed wrongly, he risked going even deeper into the triangle. "I want to pray for my opponent. Hopefully he makes it home safe," Smith said in his postfight interview. "I knew I had to slam him correctly. Unfortunately I had to slam him on his dome piece ... I hope the slam gets in that [Performance of the Night] conversation." The win improves Smith's record to 9-1, with two wins in his first two UFC appearances. He repeatedly shouted out Rampage Jackson after the finish, and impressed a number of UFC veterans with the effort.
