£10,000 reward for information about alleged murder of newborn found in canal
The body was discovered in the Wyrley and Essington Canal at Rough Wood Country Park, near Willenhall in the West Midlands, in May 2021, and despite police investigations and appeals, the baby's mother has still not been identified.
West Midlands Police is treating the newborn's death as murder and independent charity Crimestoppers is offering a £10,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the offences linked to the baby boy's death.
Detective Superintendent Jim Munro said in a statement at the scene that officers believe the baby was full-term and light-skinned and urged his parents to come forward.
He said: 'What we are doing today is, we are coming back to the scene and we are asking for information in relation to the identity of that baby's parents or directly appealing to the parents to come forward and give us information to explain what happened to the baby.'
He added: 'Four years on, loyalties may have changed, information may have come to hand to people. We ask those people to come forward and provide us with that information.
'I urge people to think of their consciences, think of what information may have come to their notice, whether that be at the time and they didn't feel the need to come forward, or now four years on, to help us understand what happened to that poor baby.'
At the time, officers said the baby was 'probably not alive' when he was put into the canal and may have been in the water for up to four days before being discovered by a passer-by in a stretch of canal off Hunts Lane.
Mr Munro said the baby boy deserves justice and his 'short life and tragic death must not be forgotten'.
Alan Edwards, West Midlands regional manager at Crimestoppers, said: 'This is a particularly sad and tragic case that has deeply affected the local community.
'We urgently need information that can help bring justice for this little boy and support for his mother.
'We believe someone out there knows something and we want to encourage them to come forward anonymously.
'The £10,000 reward is offered to prompt anyone with information to speak up, no matter how small the detail.'

Public parole hearing for one of killers of Stephen Lawrence delayed
The public parole hearing for one of the killers of Stephen Lawrence has been delayed. David Norris was due to make a bid for freedom on Wednesday and Thursday but the hearing has been adjourned because unspecified information has not been made available to the panel that is due to hear the case. Norris was jailed for life with a minimum term of 14 years and three months in 2012, after he and Gary Dobson were convicted of murder in 2011 nearly 20 years after Stephen's racist killing. A spokesperson for the Parole Board said: 'The hearing has had to be adjourned due to information directed by the panel not being made available for the case. 'Without all proper information, the panel cannot consider a parole review. 'The panel's priority must be to ensure the relevant information is available, so that they can thoroughly review the potential risks and ensure public protection.' A new date will be set for the public hearing once the information has been provided. Stephen was on his way to catch a bus with his friend Duwayne Brooks in Eltham, south-east London, in April 1993, when he was set upon and killed by a gang of five or six attackers who used a racist term before they struck. Incompetence and allegations of corruption, centred around Norris's drug dealer father Clifford Norris, dogged the investigation into Stephen's death for years. There was also outrage when it emerged that undercover officers from the Metropolitan Police had spied on justice campaigners supporting the family. In 1999 a public inquiry into the case found that the force was institutionally racist, a conclusion repeated by Baroness Casey in 2023 in her review following the rape and murder of Sarah Everard by a serving officer. Parole hearings are normally held in private, but a public hearing was allowed in Norris's case after an application by the media that was backed by Stephen's parents. In a document outlining the decision, it was revealed that Norris now accepts that he was present at the scene of the murder, but claims that he punched Stephen and was not the person who stabbed him. The other suspects in the case were Jamie and Neil Acourt, who have since been convicted of unrelated drugs offences, and Luke Knight. A sixth suspect, Matthew White, died in 2021. The College of Policing is leading a review of the most recent stage of the investigation into Stephen's death after Dobson and Norris were convicted.

Four arrests after ‘large altercation' in York city centre
Four arrests have been made after a 'large altercation' in York city centre, police said. Officers were called to the incident in Low Ousegate at 7.45pm on Saturday (July 26). North Yorkshire Police said four arrests were made for 'various offences' including affray and assault of an emergency worker. Three of the four people have since been bailed with conditions which prevent them from entering York city centre, the force said. Senior commander for York, Superintendent Ed Haywood-Noble, said: 'We are committed to tackling all types of unacceptable and criminal behaviour in our city centre at night. 'York has a vibrant hospitality scene. The vast majority of people are using the city's bars without issue or incident and those who are intent on committing crime in York are not welcome.'
