Controversy erupts as JB car washes get accused of prioritising Singaporean customers
Photo: Depositphotos/ noname3132 (for illustration purposes only) MALAYSIA: A car wash centre in Johor Bahru has come under fire after a Malaysian man claimed he was turned away in favour of Singaporean customers, sparking public outrage and prompting swift enforcement action by local authorities. According to China Press, the incident came to light when the Malaysian man shared his experience on social media. He alleged that a foreign employee at a car wash in the city told him that the service was exclusively for vehicles with Singaporean registration plates. The car wash operator later clarified that the time slot in question had been pre-booked by Singaporean customers but netizens continued expressing concern over the apparent preference given to foreigners over locals. Johor Bahru authorities have since ordered four car wash operations to shut down for operating without proper licences. Some merchants told local reporters that they had never heard of such discriminatory practices and insisted that locals still frequented these establishments. Others, particularly those in the food and beverage sector, alleged that it was not uncommon for car wash employees to flag down Singapore-registered vehicles from the roadside while ignoring Malaysian cars. See also Mural mural on the wall A manager at one of the affected car wash centres denied any form of discrimination, explaining that while both local and foreign vehicles were welcome, Singaporean customers tended to be more generous with tips. Another car wash owner in the area also rebutted claims of selective service. She noted that most of her Singaporean clients paid in Malaysian ringgit, with no added profit for the business. When asked if she was aware of any centres exclusively serving foreign cars, she said she wasn't. Amid the growing concerns, Johor politicians have directed local councils to revoke the operating licences of any businesses found to be discriminating against Malaysian customers and have stressed that the state will never tolerate those who prioritise foreigners over locals in pursuit of greater profits. Despite the controversy, several car wash workers near KSL City maintained that their services are fair and inclusive. One employee said they treated all customers equally and served them on a first-come, first-served basis, regardless of the origin of their vehicle. 'Most of our customers may be Singaporean, but that doesn't mean we give them special treatment,' said one worker. Investigations are ongoing. Grab posts US$20M profit in Q2, rebounding from US$68M loss as revenue beats forecasts
Depositphotos/Piter2121 Grab Holdings rebounded from a US$68 million (S$88.24 million) loss in the same period last year with this year's US$20 million profit. The company's second quarter (Q2) revenue of US$819 million beat analysts' expectations of US$811.3 million, Reuters reported, citing LSEG data. This came as consumer spending rose across its ride-hailing and food delivery services despite global economic uncertainty. Grab CFO Peter Oey told Reuters that affordability has been key in driving the business' growth. 'What we're seeing is that the more you make our products more affordable, it drives that growth, and it also shields us from some of the macro that you're seeing across the globe,' he said. The company said it's been working to attract price-sensitive consumers to its ride-hailing service while expanding its driver pool to meet rising demand. The company also highlighted strong growth in Indonesia, a market it once called underpenetrated, and is looking to tap into the country's large population to expand its share. Mr Oey said Indonesia is already profitable and that the company plans to double down on investing there. When Reuters asked about the company acquiring smaller Indonesian rival GoTo, Mr Oey reiterated it is not in discussions with the latter. In a stock exchange filing in early June, Grab denied media reports of a possible merger with the Indonesian tech firm, stating: 'The parties are not involved in any discussions at this time and Grab has not entered into any definitive agreements.' /TISG Read also: Grab rolls out first EV fleet of seven-seater BYD M6 MPVs for KLIA transport services Featured image by Depositphotos (for illustration purposes only) () => { const trigger = if ('IntersectionObserver' in window && trigger) { const observer = new IntersectionObserver((entries, observer) => { => { if ( { lazyLoader(); // You should define lazyLoader() elsewhere or inline here // Run once } }); }, { rootMargin: '800px', threshold: 0.1 }); } else { // Fallback setTimeout(lazyLoader, 3000); } });

To that end, the committee will oversee work in four key areas. The first is the near-term deployment of AVs, incorporating feedback from residents. The second is regulations, liability and enforcement, to ensure that there is safety and accountability in the AV sector. The third is industry and jobs, to grow local AV capabilities, create new jobs and "bring workers along" as AVs reshape transportation in Singapore. The fourth is technology and safety, to ensure that the AV sector has robust cybersecurity and data policies. Thursday's announcement came after Mr Siow, who is also Senior Minister of State for Finance, said last month that he expected to see "many" AVs on Singapore's roads in the next five years. Mr Siow also announced last month that AVs will be trialled in Punggol later this year. Grab, meanwhile, started shuttling employees between its One-North office and One-North MRT station with an autonomous bus earlier this month. WeRide, an AV company that has been running a shuttle service at Resorts World Sentosa for a year, currently ferries about 100 passengers daily on a 1.2km route around Sentosa.
