Newcastle United Submit €80M Bid For Benjamin Sesko Amid Isak Uncertainty: Report
Newcastle bid €80 million for Šeško amid rumours that Isak may leave. Šeško prefers Manchester United, who might offer Rasmus Højlund in a player-plus-cash deal.
Newcastle United have made a formal move for RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Šeško, submitting a package worth €80 million as they brace for the possible departure of star forward Alexander Isak.
The offer, tabled within the past 24 hours, consists of €75 million upfront, with an additional €5 million in potential add-ons.
The Magpies are accelerating their search for a long-term No. 9 as Liverpool continue to circle around Isak with serious intent.
According to The Athletic, Newcastle have already rejected a £110 million bid from Liverpool for Isak, but the Premier League champions remain keen. Isak himself is understood to be open to a move this summer, adding urgency to Newcastle's plans to secure a replacement.
Sesko Weighing Newcastle vs. United — But Prefers Old Trafford
Benjamin Šeško, one of Europe's most coveted young forwards, is now at the center of a transfer tug-of-war between Newcastle and Manchester United. Both clubs have presented compelling cases to the 21-year-old Slovenian, with United long considering him a top target amid their persistent goal-scoring woes.
According to German journalist Guido Schäfer, the striker sees more long-term potential in United's evolving project under new manager Rúben Amorim, even in the absence of European football in 2025–26.
Arsenal had also monitored Šeško earlier in the window but shifted focus to Viktor Gyökeres, completing a €63.5m deal for Isak's fellow Swede last month.
United's Financial Flexibility: Buy Now, Balance Later
Despite needing to sell players this summer, Manchester United are in a position to buy before selling, provided that outgoing deals are completed before the end of the window.
With a third straight summer of goal-scoring concerns, Amorim has made it clear that bolstering the frontline is essential — and Šeško, with his blend of size, movement, and technical ability, fits the mold of a long-term No. 9.
A potential breakthrough could come via a player-plus-cash deal involving Rasmus Højlund, United's current striker. RB Leipzig are reportedly open to selling Šeško if United include Højlund in the offer, along with a financial sweetener.
Højlund, 22, joined United last summer amid high expectations but struggled in his second campaign, netting just four Premier League goals in 2024–25 after an encouraging 10-goal debut season.
While some at United remain confident in his long-term potential, Leipzig see an opportunity to acquire a talented young forward who could thrive in the Bundesliga's more developmental environment.
Newcastle's pursuit of Šeško is also shaped by the looming uncertainty around Alexander Isak's future. Despite rejecting Liverpool's massive bid, Newcastle may eventually be forced to part ways with the 25-year-old due to Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) and the financial opportunity such a sale presents.
Should Isak leave, Šeško is viewed as the primary successor. Newcastle have scouted the Leipzig forward extensively and are impressed by his physicality, finishing, and maturity at the top level — attributes that would fit seamlessly into Eddie Howe's system.

China-US tensions could bring more Chinese goods to Europe: ECB blog
Hit by higher US tariffs, Chinese exporters may redirect some of their goods from the United States to the euro area, and that could bring down headline harmonised index of consumer prices (HICP) inflation in the zone by around 0.15 percentage points in 2026, with smaller effects persisting into 2027, according to a blog by European Central Bank (ECB) experts. During the 2018 US-China trade war, such redirection resulted in euro area imports from China increasing by around 2-3 per cent between 2018 and 2019, they noted. Now, history could repeat. In a severe scenario in which US tariffs on Chinese goods escalate to an effective rate of around 135 per cent, the euro area could see imports from China rise by up to 10 per cent in 2026. Hit by higher US tariffs, Chinese exporters may redirect some of their goods from the US to the euro area, and that could bring down headline HICP inflation in the zone by around 0.15 pps in 2026, with smaller effects persisting into 2027, an European Central Bank blog said. Chinese authorities have pledged targeted support to help affected exporters redirect sales to domestic or third markets. A second estimate that uses general equilibrium models featuring production inter-linkages suggests a somewhat more moderate increase in euro area imports from China of 7-9 per cent, the blog said. Several factors suggest that the euro area could experience a larger redirection of Chinese exports this time than it did back in 2018. First, the composition of Chinese exports to the United States and to the euro area is similar, making the euro area a natural alternative. Second, established supply chain links, which have expanded since the last China-US trade war, and ongoing industrial upgrades in China facilitate the redirection of trade flows. Many euro area firms already rely on Chinese imports, making it easier to absorb redirected goods. More broadly, around three-fourths of all products imported by large euro area countries already have at least one Chinese supplier. Third, Chinese businesses have laid the groundwork to facilitate faster market entry. For example, they have almost tripled their presence with investments in European sales and distribution networks since 2017, the ECB blog noted. Fourth, the depreciation of the Chinese renminbi makes Chinese goods cheaper and more attractive for European importers. And fifth, while the profit margins of Chinese exporters have narrowed since the onset of the first trade conflict in 2018, many firms, especially those in final goods production, still have room to absorb the reduced profit margins, the blog said. In addition, Chinese authorities have pledged targeted support to help affected exporters redirect sales to domestic or third markets, which could allow for further price cuts, it noted. Calculations by the ECB experts indicate that lower Chinese import prices would reduce overall import prices by 1.6 per cent. But it will take some time for consumer prices to drop. The magnitude of the effect depends on several factors, including the strength of domestic demand, the scale of the shock itself and the potential policy responses that may offset the disinflationary impact, the blog added. Toronto Masters: Zverev Sets Up Popyrin Clash As Cerundolo Withdraws Midway Through Fixture
Alexander Zverev secured a 6-4, 1-0 victory as Francisco Cerundolo pulled out following an abdominal injury. Alexander Zverev moved into the quarterfinal of the ATP Toronto Masters with a triumph over Francisco Cerundolo on Sunday as the latter was forced to withdraw due to an injury. Zverev secured a 6-4, 1-0 victory as Cerundolo pulled out following an abdominal injury, and the German is in line to take on holder Alexei Popyrin in his upcoming test. Australia's Popyrin secured his ninth consecutive win in Canada by defeating ninth seed Holger Rune 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. The 26th-ranked Australian benefited from nearly 40 unforced errors made by his Danish opponent, who has occasionally received advice from Andre Agassi. Looking ahead to facing Popyrin, Zverev mentioned he would return to the practice court after his shortened victory but first paid tribute to Cerundolo. 'He's an incredible player, and we share a close personal relationship," Zverev said of Cerundolo. 'I know about abdominal injuries. 'You can't serve or accelerate on the forehand. He had tears in his eyes when he had to quit. He didn't want to disappoint the crowd. 'But they can last from a few days to a few months. I respect him – he beat me three times before tonight." Zverev, the 2017 champion, will be playing his fifth quarter-final in seven Canadian appearances. Earlier, Popyrin saved a break point with his sixth ace against Rune while serving for victory in the final game, finishing with a lob winner that left Rune flat-footed. 'This win means a lot," said Popyrin. 'I started the week not high on confidence but knew my game was there. 'I just let go of the pressure and it worked out for me," added Popyrin, who said dropping the first set was frustrating. 'I told myself to keep going and managed to play aggressively on the next break point that I got. From then on I felt much more comfortable." view comments First Published: August 03, 2025, 09:12 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. What Stephen A. Smith Had to Say About Luka Doncic's $165 Million Los Angeles Lakers Extension
Los Angeles Lakers star Luka Doncic's New Contract Gets Reaction from Stephen A. Smith (Image Credit: Getty Images) Luka Doncic 's three-year, $165 million extension with the Los Angeles Lakers sent shockwaves through the NBA world. But few reactions were as compelling—or as critical—as that of ESPN's Stephen A. Smith . Known for his sharp opinions and no-nonsense delivery, Smith offered a nuanced take on the Lakers' decision to secure their future around the 25-year-old Slovenian star. 'Foregone Conclusion'—But Pressure Comes Next Stephen A. Smith began by saying the extension was hardly a surprise. 'I think it was a foregone conclusion. I think anybody with sense knew it was going to come down to this,' he stated, pointing to the allure of the Lakers' legacy and the inevitability of locking in a superstar like Luka Doncic long-term. From Smith's perspective, the Lakers made the obvious choice to build their post-LeBron James era around a generational talent. For Doncic, it's an opportunity to step onto a global stage few franchises can offer. Yet, Stephen A. Smith was quick to caution that this extension comes with sky-high expectations. Wearing the purple and gold, he said, is about more than talent—it's about meeting the weight of legacy. Praise for Luka's Offseason Shape—But a Warning Follows Stephen A. gave credit where it's due, acknowledging Luka Doncic 's improved fitness. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Rajafair Knee Pain Treatments Might Surprise You Knee Pain Treatment | Search Ads Undo 'When you see him having lost this weight, you get excited,' he said. A leaner Luka brings not just better mobility, but the potential for increased defensive presence and off-ball movement. Still, Stephen A. Smith wasn't letting go of his signature skepticism: 'There's a difference between getting in shape in the offseason and staying in shape during the season… That's where it's going to really, really show.' He emphasized that Luka Doncic's ability to sustain this transformation over the full NBA grind remains unproven. The Hollywood appearances and magazine spreads may draw attention, but the real test will be consistency—something Smith feels Doncic hasn't mastered yet. A New Chapter in Lakers Leadership Beyond the stats, Smith's focus shifted to leadership and legacy. He reminded fans that being a Laker comes with intense media attention and constant comparisons to legends of the past. It's a stage that amplifies both greatness and shortcomings. Luka Doncic, Stephen A. Smith said, must now grow as a leader. This extension isn't just about points and highlights—it's about stepping into a role that demands responsibility, vocal leadership, and the maturity to guide a team through the highs and lows of a season. Stephen A. Smith's reaction to Luka Doncic's contract extension strikes a familiar balance: enthusiasm tempered with realism. While he sees tremendous potential in the deal, he's clear that the Lakers' gamble on Doncic will only pay off if the star embraces everything that comes with the jersey—from conditioning and defense to leadership and championship expectations.
