Firefighters deal with ‘challenging night' ahead of July 12 Orange Order parades

Firefighters in Northern Ireland said they dealt with a challenging night as bonfires were lit ahead of the July 12 celebrations. Tens of thousands will take to the streets across the region for the traditional Orange Order parades on Saturday. The festivities will be spread across 19 main locations to mark the 334th anniversary of the Battle of the Boyne where the Protestant King William of Orange triumphed over the Catholic King James II. It comes after the burning of bonfires at an estimated 300 locations in loyalist neighbourhoods across the region on Thursday and Friday nights. While most of the bonfires passed off peacefully, there was condemnation after effigies of migrants in a boat were burned on a bonfire in Moygashel, Co Tyrone. Pictures of the Irish rap band Kneecap and Irish flags were also burned on other pyres. It was a challenging & extremely busy night for NIFRS. Between 6pm & 2am, we received 277 emergency calls. This resulted in our Firefighters attending 194 operational incidents, 72 of these incidents were bonfire related. Read our full statement: — Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (@NIFRSOFFICIAL) July 12, 2025 But the most contentious bonfire was located on a site containing asbestos and close to an electricity sub station off the Donegall Road in south Belfast. The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) said it dealt with 72 bonfire related incidents across the evening. One firefighter was attacked while attending a bonfire in Lisburn, Co Antrim. NIFRS area commander Andy Burns said: 'Between 6pm 11 July and 2am 12 July 2025, we received 277 emergency 999 calls. 'This resulted in our firefighters attending 194 operational incidents, 72 of which were bonfire related. Peak activity was between 10pm and 1am. 'During this period, the number of emergency calls received increased by 154% when compared to 2024. 'It was a challenging and extremely busy night for NIFRS with an increase in demand for our regional control centre and emergency response.' The spokesperson added: 'Disappointingly, a firefighter was attacked while attending a bonfire in Lisburn. They were not injured and remained on duty. 'This was an isolated incident and not reflective of the support shown to firefighters in carrying out their duties across the evening.' Of all the loyal order parades to take place on Saturday, around 30 have been officially categorised as sensitive by the Parades Commission. Locations of sensitive parades this year include Belfast, Coleraine, Keady, Dunloy, Rasharkin, Strabane, Newtownabbey, Maghera, Newtownbutler, Portadown, Glengormley and Bellaghy. More than 4,000 police officers and police staff will be working on July 12. On the 11th night, around 1,200 officers were deployed to monitor public safety at bonfires. The cost of policing parades and bonfires in Northern Ireland through spring and summer was £6.1 million last year, a figure that was up £1.5 million on the previous year. The bill, which covers the period April 1 to August 31, also includes the cost of policing republican commemorations around Easter and events to mark the mid-August anniversary of the introduction of internment without trial during the Troubles. The PSNI expects the costs in 2025 to be higher still. This is due to falling police numbers and the resultant increased reliance on paying overtime to ensure enough officers are on duty for the events. Chief Constable Jon Boutcher has urged mutual respect in the marking of events. He said: 'Our officers will be on the ground throughout the weekend, working in partnership with community leaders, event organisers, and local representatives to support lawful, peaceful, and family-friendly events. However where necessary, we will take firm and proportionate action to keep people safe. 'Our priority remains the safety and wellbeing of everyone.' On Sunday morning, an Orange Order parade has been permitted to pass Ardoyne shops in north Belfast restricted to one band and 50 members of the order. It is a return parade at a former flashpoint which traditionally took place on the evening of July 12 often resulting in violent scenes. Meanwhile, the traditional July 13 events organised by the Royal Black Preceptory in the village of Scarva, Co Armagh will take place on Monday. The event includes a parade as well as a sham fight between actors playing rival monarchs William and James.

Recently recaptured Ecuador drug lord ‘Fito' accepts US extradition request

Ecuador's most infamous drug lord has agreed to be extradited to the United States to face cocaine and weapons smuggling charges, a court in the capital Quito has said. The announcement on Friday is the latest chapter in the dramatic underworld tale of Adolfo Macias, alias 'Fito', who was recaptured in June after escaping from a maximum security prison 18 months ago in a jailbreak that triggered a bloody wave of gang violence. Macias, head of the 'Los Choneros' gang, is wanted in the US on charges of cocaine distribution, conspiracy and firearms-related crimes, including weapons smuggling. After Macias vanished from his prison cell in the southwestern port of Guayaquil in January 2024, authorities had been scouring the world for him, offering a $1m reward for information leading to his capture. But it emerged that the country's most wanted man was hiding out at a family member's mansion in his hometown. Ecuadorian security forces recaptured the drug kingpin last month at an underground bunker beneath a marble-walled house in the port city of Manta, some 260km (160 miles) southwest of the capital, Quito. The former taxi-driver-turned-crime-boss had been serving a 34-year sentence since 2011 for involvement in organised crime, drug trafficking and murder. In a country plagued by drug-related crime, Los Choneros members responded with violence as the manhunt began after their leader's escape – using car bombs, holding prison guards hostage and storming a television station during a live broadcast. President Daniel Noboa's right-wing government had recently declared, 'We will gladly send him and let him answer to the North American law.' Macias, dressed in an orange prison uniform, took part in a court hearing Friday via videolink from a high-security prison in Guayaquil. In response to a judge's question, he replied, 'Yes, I accept (extradition).' This would make Macias the first Ecuadorian extradited by his country since the measure was written into law last year, after a referendum in which Noboa sought the approval of measures to boost his war on criminal gangs. Ecuador, once a peaceful haven wedged between the world's two top cocaine exporters, Colombia and Peru, has seen violence erupt in recent years as rival gangs with ties to Mexican and Colombian cartels vie for control. These gang wars have largely played out inside the country's prisons, where Macias wielded immense control. He was the unofficial boss of his Guayaquil prison, where authorities found images glorifying him, weapons and US dollars. Videos of parties he held in the prison captured fireworks and a mariachi band. In one sequence, he appeared waving, laughing and petting a fighting rooster. Macias earned a law degree behind bars. By the time he escaped, he was considered a suspect in the assassination of presidential candidate and anticorruption crusader Fernando Villavicencio in 2023. Soon after Macias's prison break, Noboa declared Ecuador to be in a state of 'internal armed conflict' and ordered the military and tanks into the streets to 'neutralize' the gangs. Los Choneros has ties to Mexico's Sinaloa cartel, Colombia's Gulf Clan – the world's largest cocaine exporter – and Balkan mafias, according to the Ecuadorian Organized Crime Observatory. More than 70 percent of all cocaine produced in the world now passes through Ecuador's ports, according to government data. In 2024, the country seized a record 294 tonnes of drugs, mainly cocaine.

Woman charged in Seattle Safeway 'Monday Cheap Chicken' shooting

The Brief Army veteran Jesse Grant was shot in a Seattle Safeway parking lot after a dispute over some tossed chicken bones. The suspect, 31-year-old Charelle Dale, is charged with assault and firearm possession, with bail set at $350,000. Grant remains hospitalized, concerned about his family's well-being and medical expenses. SEATTLE - Turmoil outside a Seattle Safeway parking lot took a violent turn, leaving an Army veteran shot and hospitalized. The backstory Jesse Grant, a father of three, says he just got off work at a nearby business when he and his coworker bought Safeway's Monday Cheap Chicken deal, and were eating in a car parked outside the grocery chain. "I was throwing my chicken onto the ground outside my window so I wouldn't get any mess in my co-worker's car," Grant said. That's when he says another driver parked next to them and accused him of throwing chicken bones at her vehicle. "She opens up the car and steps onto some chicken and she's like, 'What the f***? Why is there some chicken on the ground?' And she looks over at me and she's like, 'Are you serious man? You're just throwing chicken onto the ground?' I'm like, 'who cares, leave me alone," Grant said. A police report states the argument escalated when the other driver, identified as 31-year-old Charelle Dale, took scissors and tried slashing Grant's coworker's tires. "I jump out of the car and tackle her to the ground and I put her into citizens arrest," Grant said. Cell phone video captured the chaos, moments before the shooting occurred. Grant says he didn't even realize there was a gun pointed at his head, which was in Dale's hand at the time. "I was in the military and I never got shot, but I get shot in Safeway over some chicken," Grant said. As security was on the phone with 911, Grant was shot in the leg. Then, another woman is seen running to the scene, believed to be Dale's girlfriend. Then, they both ran away on South Andover Street, then north of Rainier Avenue South. "If she's willing to shoot somebody over chicken, she's willing to shoot someone over anything," Grant said. Dale is being held on $350,000 bail, charged with second-degree assault and first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm in connection to the shooting. Dale is also accused in several other King County crimes, such as a Seattle armed robbery over an elderly man's Rolex, and using a car prowl victim's stolen credit cards at Bellevue Square Mall. She and her alleged accomplice, 28-year-old Deionte Hunter, have been charged in the crimes, which happened back in April. Meanwhile, Grant is still recovering in the hospital, worried about his family and mounting medical bills. "I have three children, I have a mother-in-law who lives in our house, so I have to get back to work as fast as possible."
