How a viral post led to Juurnee, a travel site matching passengers with helpers

It started as a cry for help that went viral. Rachel Crampton was facing a 23-hour flight with three children under the age of five. Unable to recruit a family member or friend to help out, she took to social media and offered a sizeable cash payment – A$1,000 (about £560 at the time) – to someone who would accompany her on the epic London-to-Sydney flight.
Crampton, a Briton based in Sydney, was inundated with responses and found an 'amazing Aussie girl' living in London who was homesick but could not afford the flight back to Australia.
She has since turned that experience into a business which has just launched in the UK after success in Australia. Her website, Juurnee, matches those who want help on a flight with people willing to be their travel companion.
Those needing help could include a parent travelling solo with toddlers, an older person requiring some assistance, someone with a disability, an unaccompanied child, or a nervous flyer.
The companion receives a payment that will cover part, or all, of the cost of their flight.
At the time of writing there were 30 live requests for help on the site. These included a London-to-Switzerland return flight, where the full cost is offered to someone who can help an older passenger who uses a wheelchair; and a London-to-Sydney return trip, with 50% of the flight cost paid, for someone who can help a mother with her one-year-old (there is an option to help just one way).
Crampton says more than 12,000 people have signed up to be a companion and many are qualified teachers, nurses, midwives, childcare workers and others who have clearances to work with children, or qualifications to assist people with disabilities.
But she adds: 'You don't need to be a nanny or nurse – just a decent person willing to lend a hand.'
People seeking a companion can post their offer for free and don't pay for a successful match. They list the route, the date, the flight details and the sum they are willing to pay someone to travel with them.
They can choose their own payment amount, although the website recommends 50% to 100% of a companion's flight cost.
Companions sign up for free and can view the offers, but pay a £15-a-year subscription to be able to message people directly to offer their services. They buy their own flights, so, to that extent, the person who needs help is not responsible for them.
Once a companion has applied for an offer, the person requesting help has 14 days to accept and match with them. If selected, the companion will be put in touch with the individual needing help.
Crampton recommends companions get paid at the end of the trip, and that an escrow service is used to hold the payment from when the agreement is struck until 48 hours after landing. 'At the moment we are recommending our matched travellers use Escrow.com,' she adds.
There is no official 'contract' between the two parties provided by the site – for example, outlining what is expected of the companion – but Crampton says users are free to create one themselves. The website does provide a guide that covers different scenarios.
What if the companion doesn't turn up at the airport? 'We haven't had this situation crop up just yet,' says Crampton.
If, say, the companion rearranged their flight, they would not be paid their fee. 'Hopefully, they would inform Juurnee, or the person they were meant to be helping, in advance, and then we can find another companion,' she says.

Two Vietnamese tourists died at sea in Greece on Friday, the coastguard said, as gale-force winds confined many ferries to port. The raging winds have disrupted travel for tens of thousands of summer travellers, and also sparked fires. A coastguard spokeswoman said a man and woman had died at the Sarakiniko beach on the tourist island of Milos in the Cyclades, as firefighters battled blazes near Athens and the island of Cephalonia. "The man and woman were found unconscious in the sea and were taken to the local health centre," the spokeswoman said. "They were Vietnamese tourists on a cruise ship group. The woman fell in the water and the man apparently tried to save her," she said. The civil protection ministry said wind gusts would reach 88 kilometres (54 miles) an hour, especially in the southern Aegean and the Sea of Crete. Over 200 firefighters backed by three aircraft and five helicopters were battling a fire in Keratea, east of Athens, Costas Tsigkas, head of the association of Greek firefighter officers, told ERT state television. "It's a difficult fire...(owing) to wind gusts," he said, adding that a number of local communities had been evacuated. The Cephalonia fire was earlier placed under control, local officials said. National weather service EMY said the phenomenon would weaken after midnight. The coastguard said most ferries were unable to depart on schedule from Piraeus and other Athens ports, especially to the Cyclades or Dodecanese islands. Several planned ferries were cancelled while others were postponed. Maritime connections with the Saronic islands near Athens including Aegina, Hydra, Poros and Spetses and the Ionian Sea are unaffected, it said. The Athens National Observatory in a statement also warned there was a "very high potential for wind-driven forest fires", particularly in the east and south of the country. The mayor of Athens had shut down the National Garden on Thursday after a tree fell in one of the capital's busiest high streets, narrowly missing shoppers. Strong winds are common in Greece at this time of year.

Beaches, although fun, can become dangerous places if your child doesn't know how to stay safe in the sea. 3 3 The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) says that there are five key things for families to remember when they head to the beach. Following these instructions could save someone's life and it's important for your children to 1. Choose a lifeguarded beach Lifeguards are specially trained to keep beachgoers safe in the water. Last year, RNLI lifeguards helped 17,068 people on the beach who had gotten into difficulty in the sea. They patrol over 240 beaches in the UK and the Channel Islands, meaning that there will also be a beach nearby where they can help to keep you safe. Going to a beach without a lifeguard means that it will be much harder to get immediate help, should something go wrong. 2. Float to live If you are struggling in the water, kicking or trying too hard to tread water can lead to exhaustion. This heightens the risk of drowning. Instead, tilt your head back and submerge your ears while breathing normally. Use your hands to stay afloat and relax. It is essential that children learn this vital skill too, so practice in a pool with them before you head to the beach. 3. Know your flags The RNLI also warns that it is important to know what each flag being flown at the beach means. If you want to swim or body board, then you must stay between the red and yellow flags. You cannot swim if only a red flag is flying as this means the water is too dangerous. Beachgoers planning to use surfboards, paddleboards or non-powered craft must stay between the black-and-white chequered flags. Swimming in that zone is strictly banned. 4. Know the risks It is important to teach your children about the risks they might face in the sea. Rip currents, for example, can drag you out into deep water, which could put your life at risk. If you get caught in a current, do not try and swim against it. Instead, go with the current until it eases and then swim back via a different route. Also, check that the water temperature is safe to swim in. Entering cold water too slowly or swimming when the temperature is dangerous low could put you into cold water shock. This is often characterized by an involuntary gasp, an increased heart rate and rapid breathing, all of which could lead to drowning. Water below 15°C is generally considered to be too cold to swim in, as it causes your body to constrict blood vessels, which increases your heart rate and blood pressure. 5. Call 999 or 112 in an emergency In the event of an emergency, you must call 999 so that the emergency services can help you. Alternatively, the 112 number - which can be used in any European country - can be called, if you need help. Take your phone into the sea with you, in a waterproof pouch, so that you can call for help even in the water. Inflatables at the beach Jo Talbot, commercial director at the Royal Life Saving Society, has also warned against using inflatables at beaches. She says: "We wouldn't recommend people using inflatables at beaches. 'You could get caught by the wind and taken out of your depth, which would be extremely dangerous. Jo added that buoyancy aids, like armbands, are still not enough on their own to keep your child safe. She added: "They can help a child stay buoyant in the water. "But the parent needs to stay next to the child at all times, in case those aids come off and the child gets into difficulty and starts to sink."
