Reese McGuire made an immediate impact for the Chicago Cubs in his first game with the club.
The former Boston Red Sox catch hit two home runs — including one in his first at-bat — to propel Chicago to an 11-8 comeback win over the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday after being recalled from Triple-A Iowa earlier in the day.

It marked the first time McGuire played in an MLB game since July 2024 while he was with the Red Sox.
'I'm just thankful for this opportunity to be back here,' an emotional McGuire told Marquee Sports Network's Taylor McGregor after the game. 'What a team to be a part of, and that was a fun game. I worked really hard to get back here."
McGuire's first home run came in his first at-bat. The second came in the eighth inning which tied the game at 8-8 en route to the comeback victory. He originally wasn't in Sunday's starting lineup, but a late scratch of Carson Kelly due to illness.
The veteran catcher spent three seasons with the Red Sox before he was designated for assignment last June. In 161 games for Boston, he batted .264 with a .315 on-base percentage, seven home runs, 20 doubles and 46 RBI.

McGuire signed a minor league deal with the Cubs in January. He was released on May 16 but returned to the Windy City and assigned to Triple-A last week.

The Red Sox and Yankees went down different roads, and the rivalry has suffered for it

They have left the Red Sox behind. Advertisement Why? The Yankees are a sharply focused organization that has deftly blended a high payroll with a productive farm system. If they go on to win the American League East this season it would be for the third time in four years. It's a testament to stability. General manager Brian Cashman has been in charge of baseball operations since 1998. They've missed the playoffs five times in his tenure. The Sox have missed the playoffs five times since 2019. Cashman's chief lieutenants — Jean Afterman, Mike Fishman, Tim Naehring, Damon Oppenheimer, and Kevin Reese — have all been in the front office for at least 18 years. The Yankees have the requisite number of analysts, scientists, and researchers but Cashman also values the advice of former general managers Omar Minaya and Brian Sabean, who are on the payroll. Aaron Boone is the third manager since 1996. Joe Torre held the job for 12 years, Joe Girardi for 10 years, and now Boone is in his eighth season. The Red Sox thrived with chaos and change for a while. Terry Francona won two championships working with Theo Epstein during a long stretch together. Ben Cherington made the right hire at the right time when he picked John Farrell to manage the 2013 team. Dave Dombrowski hired Alex Cora to manage the 2018 team and they presided over a powerhouse. Injured Red Sox slugger tries to rally team with bizarre mustache sacrifice vs. Yankees

Alex Bregman may not be available to play for the Boston Red Sox right now, but that didn't stop him from trying to inspire an offensive rally Friday night. It was with his mustache, not his bat. Baseball players are some of the most superstitious athletes in the world, and Bregman illustrated that during a game against the New York Yankees on the road. The Red Sox entered the game having lost six of their previous nine games, and they found themselves in a hole after Walker Buehler gave up seven runs in the first two innings of the game. Bregman tried to rally his teammates by heading into the clubhouse and returning to the dugout with a clean shave. He shaved off his mustache in the middle of the game in hopes it would be a spark for his squad. Bregman, who is dealing with a quad injury that has him on the 10-day IL, seemed to help in some respect. The Red Sox got on the board with a home run from rookie Marcelo Mayer, who was recently called up from Triple-A, and they scored three more runs in the sixth inning to make it 8-4. In the top of the seventh inning, Rafael Devers, labeled a Yankees killer in his Red Sox career, launched a two-run homer to cut the lead to 9-6 in favor of the home team. Bregman's quick action to shave off his 'stache wasn't the magic potion needed for an all-time comeback. Yankees closer Devin Williams shut the door on Boston's comeback hopes in the top of the ninth inning to come away with the first victory in this weekend series. Boston was supposed to be a team poised for the playoffs in 2025, but injuries and inconsistent play have them five games under .500. They sit fourth in the AL East, while the Yankees are five games ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays in first place in the division. Bregman, though, has enjoyed his new home in Boston, joining the Red Sox this offseason after nine seasons with the Houston Astros. Bregman is slashing .299/.385/.553 with a .938 OPS, 11 homers, 17 doubles and 35 RBIs in 51 games this season. But it isn't offense that has been hurting the Red Sox. It's pitching. Starting pitching, to be exact. Boston starters have a combined 4.53 ERA in 65 games this season, and the team has a 4.06 ERA overall, 21st in the league. Ace starter Garrett Crochet has been as advertised with a 1.98 ERA and 101 strikeouts entering his start against New York Saturday night in the Bronx.
