Coimbatore Corporation sends ₹9.89-crore proposal to State Government for aviary at VOC Zoo site
The 4.5-acre zoo, established in 1965, was closed in January 2022 after the Central Zoo Authority suspended its licence in 2018 due to poor upkeep.
The Corporation had initially planned to develop an open reading space at the site, with ₹75 lakh allocated in its 2024–25 budget. The plan has now been revised. Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabakaran said the proposal is likely to be sanctioned, with discussions ongoing with private partners.
In a parallel initiative, the Corporation also plans to convert the existing volleyball and kabaddi courts near VOC Park into indoor facilities. 'The basketball court in the area has already been upgraded. The project is estimated to cost ₹5 crore and will be implemented under the 'Namakku Naame' scheme using CSR funds, with support from District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar,' he said.

Maharashtra Set To Launch ‘Chhava Ride' App, Aims To Revolutionise Public Transport
The state-backed app promises affordable, safe, and reliable travel for commuters while creating job opportunities for Marathi youth In a groundbreaking move, the Maharashtra State Transport (ST) Corporation is set to launch its own passenger-friendly mobile application, 'Chhava Ride", aimed at transforming public transportation across the state. Announced by Transport Minister and ST Corporation Chairman Pratap Sarnaik, this state-backed app promises affordable, safe, and reliable travel for commuters while creating job opportunities for Marathi youth. The initiative aligns with the state and central government's aggregator policy, ensuring a modern, technology-driven approach to public transport. During a recent meeting at the Mantralaya, Minister Sarnaik revealed that the app, developed under the guidance of the Transport Department, will cater to buses, rickshaws, taxis, and e-buses. 'Our goal is to free passengers and drivers from the exploitative practices of private companies that prioritise profits over people," Sarnaik said. He emphasised that Chhava Ride will not only provide a trustworthy platform for commuters but also generate a new revenue stream for the ST Corporation, which has long been a symbol of reliability in Maharashtra. The app's name, Chhava Ride, was finalised after discussions involving options like Jai Maharashtra, Maha-Ride, Maha-Yatri, and Maha-Go. The name reflects a sense of pride and identity, resonating with the state's youth. With the final approval pending from Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar, the app is expected to be operational soon, bringing a seamless booking experience to millions. One of the app's standout features is its commitment to empowering local youth. MLA Pravin Darekar, who attended the meeting, announced that Mumbai Bank will offer financial support to unemployed Marathi youth looking to join the transport sector. Loans at a 10% interest rate will be provided for vehicle purchases, with subsidies from institutions like the Annasaheb Economic Development Corporation and OBC Corporation, effectively making these loans interest-free. 'This is a golden opportunity for our youth to build a sustainable livelihood," Darekar said. Unlike private ride-hailing apps, which often face criticism for high fares and driver exploitation, Chhava Ride will prioritise fair compensation for drivers and affordable fares for passengers. Sarnaik highlighted the ST Corporation's robust infrastructure, skilled workforce, and technological capabilities, which make it the ideal entity to run this app. 'We're not just launching an app; we're building a system that puts people first," he added. With its focus on safety, affordability, and local empowerment, Chhava Ride is poised to redefine public transportation in Maharashtra, offering a model that blends tradition with innovation. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Construction of sports centre at Anna Nagar makes good progress
Work on constructing a sports centre at Anna Nagar in Tiruchi is progressing at a brisk pace, with the authorities expecting to complete it within a few months. Following requests from residents, the civic body proposed developing sports infrastructure to promote sports and recreational activities in the city. The facility is being established on a 2.3-acre land belonging to Tiruchi Corporation near Uzhavar Santhai at Anna Nagar in Ward 28. A sum of ₹5.51 crore was sanctioned under the State Finance Commission Grant and the Corporation Funds to develop the sports complex. A tender was floated in November 2024, and the construction of the sports centre commenced in January. 'Most of the civil works have been completed, and work on setting up the indoor stadium and courts is underway. Over 50% of the work has been completed, and the pending works will be completed before November,' said a senior Corporation official. The new sports facility will feature an indoor badminton court, a tennis court, a swimming pool, a gazebo, recreational space, and a modern gym. Among civic amenities, the sports centre will have a kitchen-cum-dining hall with an in-house cook, an administrative block, separate accommodation, and changing rooms for sportspersons, sanitation complexes, CCTV cameras, and seating arrangements to view the sport. There would be parking facilities to accommodate 50 cars and two-wheelers. The sports complex will have training programmes for aspirants. The public will be offered a monthly membership programme to access the facility. Officials said the facility would boost the city's sports infrastructure and encourage a healthy lifestyle among citizens, particularly youth.

BrahMos, naval drills and a strategic pact: PM Modi pitches defence as the bedrock of India-Philippines deep mutual ties
Defence topped the agenda as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr met in New Delhi on Tuesday, confirming a major upgrade in their relationship to a Strategic Partnership. 'Strengthening defence relations are a symbol of deep mutual trust,' said Prime Minister Modi at Hyderabad House after their talks. For the first time, three Indian Navy ships are currently taking part in exercises in Philippine waters. This marks a significant expansion of India's security presence in the Indo-Pacific, and a tangible response to the region's growing tensions. Speaking earlier at Rashtrapati Bhavan, Marcos said, 'Indo Pacific is the correct evolution of Asia Pacific.' The phrase reflects a shift in Manila's foreign policy thinking, increasingly aligned with like-minded democracies in the region, including India. Live Events India-Philippines: More weapons, more collaboration Ahead of the visit, General Romeo Brawner, Chief of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, confirmed that Manila is eyeing more defence purchases from India. The BrahMos missile system , co-developed by India and Russia, is already on order, with two more sets expected to arrive in the Philippines over the next few years. Brawner pointed to India's quality and affordability as key reasons for expanding military cooperation. India has also offered a concessional Line of Credit to help fund future defence acquisitions. Talks between Modi and Marcos also covered expansion of joint training, naval asset acquisition, and maritime security exercises. India and the Philippines are due to conduct a joint naval patrol in the South China Sea this week, signalling stronger strategic alignment. Both sides continue to urge China to abide by the 2016 arbitral tribunal ruling that invalidated its broad claims in the region. Strategic partnership now official 'It is a matter of pleasure that today we have decided to elevate our relations to the status of a Strategic Partnership,' said Modi, calling the decision a major step forward. 'A comprehensive Action Plan has also been formulated to translate the potential of this partnership into results,' he added. President Marcos, who arrived on August 4 with First Lady Louise Araneta Marcos and several Cabinet ministers, received a ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan. 'A special welcome for a special partner!' the Ministry of External Affairs posted on X. A Guard of Honour was presented before formal discussions began. This is Marcos' first visit to India since taking office in 2022, and it coincides with the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two nations. Condolences, gratitude, and shared values In a personal note, Modi expressed appreciation for Manila's support following the recent terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. 'To strongly condemn the Pahalgam terrorist attack and for standing with us in our fight against terrorism, we express our gratitude to the Government of the Philippines and its President,' he said. The two leaders also discussed broader regional and global developments, agreeing on the importance of peaceful cooperation in a rapidly changing geopolitical climate. Development projects and digital push Alongside defence, India pledged to scale up development efforts under its Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) scheme. 'I am pleased to say that under the Development Partnership, we will increase the number of Quick Impact Projects in the Philippines,' Modi said. The projects target areas such as disaster management, agriculture, healthcare, and livelihood support, with six already underway under a 2023 MoU. Modi also confirmed India will help build a sovereign data cloud infrastructure in the Philippines to support digital independence and cybersecurity. 'And we will also cooperate in the development of sovereign data cloud infrastructure in the Philippines,' he added. Trade talks, tariffs, and new agreements Bilateral trade has crossed the 3 billion dollar mark for the first time, and both countries have now agreed to begin formal negotiations for a Preferential Trade Agreement. Trade, however, hasn't been smooth sailing. The US has imposed 25 percent tariffs on Indian goods and 19 percent on Philippine products. Delhi and Manila are now exploring joint approaches to navigate future global trade disruptions. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, six new agreements covering science and technology, law, and culture are expected to be signed during this visit. Historic visit, future goals Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, summed up the visit in a post on X: 'India and the Philippines share close bonds based on the foundation of our civilisational, historical and people-to-people connections. Comprehensive discussions aimed at further cementing our enduring friendship and strong bilateral relations lie ahead.' President Marcos' visit ends on August 8. The direction of travel is clear: deeper ties, shared risks, and a growing understanding that defence and diplomacy must now go hand in hand.
