Anbumani can be PMK chief after 2026 polls, says Ramadoss
PMK's founder S Ramadoss on Thursday announced that he will decide on whom to have an alliance with and reiterated that he will continue to head the party until the 2026 assembly elections.
'I went to his place; he (Anbumani) came to mine, but in the end, the discussions ended in a stalemate. Now, it's either me or him,' Ramadoss told reporters at his residence in Villupuram.
'Until the 2026 assembly elections, I am the president of PMK,' Ramadoss said. 'I will decide on the alliance and the candidates and after 2026 Anbumani can take over. I will never expel him from the party.'
PMK, an influential party in Tamil Nadu with a 5% core vote bank from the Vanniyar community, is a key ally of the NDA. Over the decades, PMK has swung between the DMK and AIADMK. PMK has been in turmoil with the rift between the father and son.
Recently, Ramadoss said that he wanted to align with the AIADMK but Anbumani insisted that they remain with the BJP.
Ramadoss said that tensions with his son started seven years ago at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's swearing-in in Delhi when Anbumani told him that he would take care of the party. Ramadoss said that it was at that moment he learnt that Anbumani wanted to fully control the PMK, long before he was made its president in 2023.
Meanwhile, Anbumani did not react to his father's remarks on Thursday but released statements criticising the ruling DMK government in Tamil Nadu and offered condolences for the plane crash in Ahmedabad.
On June 5, Anbumani met his father at his residence but no truce seemed to have been called. After Anbumani left, RSS ideologue Gurumurthy and sidelined AIADMK leader and former Chennai mayor Saidai Duraisamy met senior Ramadoss. Last week, Ramadoss was in Chennai to meet Gurumurthy at his residence.
On May 29, senior Ramadoss told reporters that he regretted making Anbumani a Union minister (in the UPA-I government) when he was only 35-year-old. He also said that though he wanted to align with the AIADMK, Anbumani and his wife convinced him to stay with the BJP.
To be clear, Ramadoss was only confirming on record what has been known off the record ever since the AIADMK left the BJP in 2023 before patching up this April. After the split, those in the NDA including PMK stayed with the BJP with only the DMDK (Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam) taking the AIADMK's side.
According to Ramadoss, the PMK and AIADMK are natural allies and said that they would have won 10 seats together in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls which was swept by the ruling DMK-led coalition.
On April 11, the 85-year-old patriarch took over the party from his son and successor Anbumani. The father made himself president of the PMK once again and announced that Anbumani would be its working president on the day Union home minister Amit Shah arrived in Chennai.
On the following day, Shah announced that the BJP and AIADMK have patched up after 19 months and will fight the 2026 elections together.
Anbumani then challenged his father asserting that he continues to be the party chief since he was elected by PMK's general council. Anbumani's Rajya Sabha tenure ends in July. Senior Ramadoss accused his son of threatening PMK officer bearers against attending his meeting in which only 13 out of 220 party office bearers turned up on May 16.
Ramadoss and Anbumani have been sparring publicly since December 2024 after Anbumani objected to Ramadoss' decision to appoint his nephew, P Mukundan as the youth wing chief of PMK.

Jammu and Kashmir: Row erupts over BJP call to drop Urdu criteria from test
Row erupts over BJP call to drop Urdu criteria from test (Photo: PTI) SRINAGAR: Urdu is the latest flashpoint between political parties in Jammu and Kashmir. A day after J&K BJP brass sought LG Manoj Sinha's intervention for scrapping the mandatory Urdu test for recruitments to naib tehsildar (revenue official) post, opposition PDP on Friday pushed back and asked the Omar Abdullah govt not to bow to pressure, even as governing National Conference (NC) has kept mum so far, reports Naseer Ganai. "Urdu has been the official language of J&K for centuries. At least 70% of the population is familiar with the language in written and spoken form. All revenue records are preserved in this language. BJP's dislike for Urdu should be resisted by the NC govt," PDP spokesperson Naeem Akhtar said. Party MLA Waheed Parra said BJP's demand to remove Urdu from the revenue exam, if accepted, would risk erasing J&K's rich archive and cultural legacy. "Urdu is more than a language - it is a key part of J&K's heritage," he said. The controversy erupted after J&K Services Selection Board on June 9 issued an advertisement for 75 posts of naib tehsildar, specifying 'working knowledge of Urdu' as a mandatory requirement. BJP protested the move, saying it violated constitutional principles of equal opportunity and administrative impartiality and created an unfair barrier, putting aspirants from Jammu in a disadvantageous position as they usually studied Hindi and Punjabi languages. Party leaders said J&K had five official languages and giving preference to one of these in recruitment exams was discriminatory. NC has refrained from making an official statement on the controversy.

Uttar Pradesh blocks two Urs events citing law & order concerns
Representative image (ANI) AYODHYA : Local authorities in Ayodhya and Barabanki of BJP-governed UP have refused to allow two annual Urs ceremonies, citing concerns over potential breach of peace and law-and-order problems. The ceremonies have been held for years and the permission for the one in Ayodhya was denied following a complaint from VHP activists. The Ayodhya gathering has been organised at the shrine of Dada Miya in Khanpur Masodha area. The other relates to the Urs of Syed Shakeel Baba and has been held in Phoolpur area of Barabanki for the past 75 years. The VHP complaint claimed the Ayodhya gathering was being organised in the name of "Ghazi Baba" (a reference to Syed Salar Masood of Bahraich) instead of Dada Miya Urs. Salar Masood is believed to be the nephew of Mahmud of Ghazni and served as his military commander. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath recently declared that no event celebrating foreign aggressors should be allowed in the state. The permission granted under the name of "Urs Dada Miya" has been revoked as it was found that it was being organised under the name of Ghazi Baba, said Ayodhya circle officer Ashutosh Tiwari. For the Barabanki event, clearance was denied due to concerns of potential unrest. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "Some disputes have emerged that may lead to communal tension and unrest. In view of this, the administration has refused to grant permission for the Urs," Barabanki additional SP Vikas Tripathi said. Before this, the state had denied permission for Sambhal's Neja Mela, also held in the memory of Salar Masood. In Gorakhpur, the iconic Bale Miyan fair held in memory of Salar Masood-locally called Bale Miyan- was scheduled to begin on May 18 but the district administration did not grant security clearance, effectively stalling the event.

Ahmedabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a host of BJP leaders on Friday met the family members of former chief minister Vijay Rupani and offered their condolences. Rupani's wife Anjali, accompanied by their daughter Radhika, arrived on Friday from London. Their son Rushabh is expected to arrive in the early hours of Saturday after which it will be decided whether the last rites will be held in Gandhinagar or their hometown Rajkot, the family members said. Meanwhile, Rupani's sister provided her DNA samples to the authorities on Friday afternoon, so that the formalities required for the handover of his mortal remains could be completed. The PM later posted on his X handle, "I am not ready to accept that Rupani is no more with us."
