Monopoly on weapons: Government moves forward despite Shiite ministers' withdrawal

L'Orient-Le Jour10 hours ago
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam's Cabinet is moving ahead with the course it set on Tuesday. After setting a deadline for placing all weapons under the control of the state by the end of the year, the Cabinet on Thursday adopted the 'objectives' of the roadmap proposed by U.S. envoy Tom Barrack for restoring calm between Lebanon and Israel. The session was devoted to continuing the discussion on this issue.Information Minister Paul Morcos' emphasis at the end of the meeting on this phrasing suggests the government endorsed the U.S. plan's objectives but not its timeline, as the Cabinet had already established its own roadmap earlier in the week. These objectives notably include the disarmament of non-state factions, including Hezbollah, as well as the Israeli withdrawal from five remaining occupied points in southern Lebanon (see below, the...

UN Rights Chief: Israeli Plan for Gaza Takeover Must Be Halted Immediately

The Israeli government's plan for a full-scale military takeover of Gaza will cause more deaths and suffering and must be halted immediately, the United Nations Human Rights Chief Volker Turk said on Friday. The plan runs contrary to the ruling of the International Court of Justice that Israel must bring its occupation to an end as soon as possible, to the realisation of the agreed two-state solution and to the right of Palestinians to self-determination, Turk said in a statement. Israel's political-security cabinet approved a plan early on Friday to take control of Gaza City, as the country expands its military operations despite intensifying criticism at home and abroad over the devastating almost two-year-old war. Earlier Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Thursday that Israel intended to take military control of the entire Gaza Strip. "On all evidence to date, this further escalation will result in more massive forced displacement, more killing, more unbearable suffering, senseless destruction and atrocity crimes," Turk said. "Instead of intensifying this war, the Israeli Government should put all its efforts into saving the lives of Gaza's civilians by allowing the full, unfettered flow of humanitarian aid. The hostages must be immediately and unconditionally released by Palestinian armed groups."

Starmer calls Israeli escalation in Gaza ‘wrong', urges Netanyahu to reconsider

As we reported earlier, British Energy Minister Miatta Fahnbulleh said he hoped Israel would reconsider its decision to take control of Gaza City. Now, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is also weighing in, stating that Netanyahu's plan is 'wrong'. 'The Israeli Government's decision to further escalate its offensive in Gaza is wrong, and we urge it to reconsider immediately,' he said in a statement. 'This action will do nothing to bring an end to this conflict or to help secure the release of the hostages. It will only bring more bloodshed.'

Report: Berri convinced Hezbollah to take part in cabinet session

by Naharnet Newsdesk 6 hours Hezbollah was not in favor of participation in Thursday's cabinet session that approved the 'objectives' of the U.S. paper, but Speaker Nabih Berri insisted that Hezbollah and the Amal Movement take part in the meeting, pro-Hezbollah newspaper al-Akhbar reported on Friday. Berri argued that 'the current period is very sensitive and we should deal positively and give full time for discussions and negotiation,' the daily said. Al-Akhbar also quoted ministerial sources as saying that the Shiite Duo's ministers said during Thursday's session that 'the paper requires thorough examination and discussion.' 'The government already took a very major and dangerous decision without knowing its repercussions and risks for the country, so how are you asking us today to also blindly support something without looking into it very well?' the ministers added, according to the sources. The government on Tuesday took a historic decision to monopolize arms in the hands of the state before the year's end and on Thursday it approved the objectives of U.S. envoy Tom Barrack's paper, which focuses on the disarmament of Hezbollah and other armed groups in the country. The ministers of Hezbollah and the Amal Movement walked out of both sessions in protest.
