Knicks should beg Tom Thibodeau for second chance in failed coach search
That was before we knew the team didn't have much of a plan at all -- and before the Eastern Conference was completely altered by Tyrese Haliburton's torn Achilles in the NBA Finals, which followed Jayson Tatum's torn Achilles against the Knicks in the East finals. Before the team inched towards the most uninspired decision to replace Thibodeau with Mike Brown, as ESPN's Shams Charania reported Wednesday.
Now, I'm thinking the Knicks might want to hit up old Tom to apologize for how things ended, beg him to take them back and pray he accepts.
Look, I'm obviously joking here (kinda). I still think Thibodeau was too rigid with his lineups and offensive schemes, and who knows what happened behind the scenes with players who might've needed a new voice. But my goodness, New York, at least have someone in mind who isn't already employed when you make the massive decision to fire your most winningest coach from the last 20 years.
Instead, what the Knicks did was target Jason Kidd -- apparently missing the memo that he already coaches the Dallas Mavericks -- and that failed attempt to lure him away led to a bizarre path of going after four more coaches from other teams. They even interviewed Dawn Staley, despite her having no apparent interest in leaving South Carolina. Now, they're about to land on Brown, who was clearly not their first option, and suddenly giving Thibs a call doesn't sound like such a bad idea after all.
To be clear, I have no problem with Brown. In fact, I like him. I think he's a fine coach who got a raw deal in Sacramento when the Kings fired him 31 games into his third year after leading them to back-to-back winning seasons and their first playoff appearance in 17 years. He's not necessarily a downgrade from Thibodeau. I'm just not sure he's much of an upgrade either -- if at all. Which makes this whole process incredibly flawed.
You don't fire the coach who just took you to the ECF to make a high-floor, low-ceiling hire. You only make that move if you plan to take a big swing on a young coach with loads of potential or someone who's already won. Sticking with the baseball analogy, the Knicks didn't strike out here, but hiring Brown is more like a bloop single.
After years of finally looking like a competent organization, everything about this search has been mind-boggling. The Knicks better hope Brown can reach his first ECF since his time with Lebron James in Cleveland, because anything short of that will make it hard to live down the decision to fire Thibodeau.
Damian Lillard landing spots
The Bucks' decision to waive and stretch Damian Lillard's contract in order to sign Myles Turner may very well turn out to be a mistake for Milwaukee, but there's no denying it'll help another team down the line at some point.
Lillard is now a free agent, and once he's done rehabbing his torn Achilles, he'll be able to join the team of his choice without having to worry about money due to the Bucks still paying him. But where will the nine-time All-Star go? FTW's Charles Curtis compiled a list of the top five landing spots, and while I hand't considered his top option, it makes so much sense: the Boston Celtics.
And the reason is very simple: "The timeline aligns perfectly: Jayson Tatum and Lillard can rehab their Achilles injuries and then contend again in 2026."

Ex-NBA star Danilo Gallinari's pregnant wife bitten by shark in Puerto Rico
The pregnant wife of former NBA star Danilo Gallinari revealed on Friday that she had been attacked by a shark in Puerto Rico. Eleonora Boi posted a photo of herself in a hospital bed with her tongue sticking out on her Instagram page with an explanation of the terrifying event. She's expecting her third child with the former New York Knicks forward. She described it as the 'worst day of my life.' 'I never thought I could get attacked by a shark and I was near the shore and on a super crowded beach. Thankfully me and my baby are fine,' she wrote, according to a translation. 'I was rushed to the rescue and the surgery to fix my poor bruised leg went well. Now I just have to recover from the great scare. . . .' She joked that the shark would be hearing from her lawyer and thanked her husband for his 'courage' during the situation. She reportedly suffered a wound on her thigh. Department of Natural and Environmental Resources biologist Nilda Jiménez told El Nuevo Dia that officials were investigating the type of shark that bit Boi. 3 Eleonora Boi poses for a selfie from her hospital bed after the Puerto Rico shark attack. Roman Anthony and the Red Sox walk off the Astros for third-straight win
But Criswell matched Brown, and the Red Sox' batters took care of the rest, thrilling the sellout crowd of 36,881 at Fenway Park. Anthony batted with runners on the corners and no outs in the bottom of the 10th. When Sousa offered a 96-mile-per-hour fastball over the heart of the plate, Anthony walloped it over the head of center fielder Chas McCormick for the first walk off of his career. Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up Advertisement The Red Sox are 60-51. The Astros are 62-48. First baseman Abraham Toro, playing the position that mostly clearly could have used an upgrade prior to the trade deadline Thursday, finished 0-for-3 as the No. 4 hitter. It was just the third time this season and first time in more than a month that Toro batted in that spot. 'There's a reason he's in there,' manager Alex Cora said before the game. 'It's not to hit a grand slam. Hopefully he does, but with the guy that we're facing, it makes sense for him to hit there.' Advertisement Toro wound up faring poorly against Brown. He popped out to strand a runner on first in the first inning, struck out on a knuckle-curve in the dirt in the fourth, and flied out on the first pitch he saw in the sixth, leaving Jarren Duran on second. In his first major league start of the season — after making 18 last year and spending most of this season with Triple A Worcester — Criswell cruised for seven innings, allowing one run, seven hits, and two walks. Christian Walker tagged Criswell for a home run in the second inning, but Criswell, in what is expected to be a one-off spot start that resulted from the Red Sox wanting to give ace Garrett Crochet extra rest, did well to hold the Astros down from there. Aiding Criswell's effort: three Houston outs on the bases. Jesús Sánchez and Jose Altuve each committed a baserunning blunder, and Cam Smith was doubled off first base after right fielder Wilyer Abreu made an impressive running catch. Additionally, Altuve grounded into a double play, erasing Jeremy Peña, who led off the game with a single. The Sox, meanwhile, were stifled by righthander Hunter Brown, who didn't crack until the seventh inning. His only run allowed came after a walk (Trevor Story) and hit by pitch (Masataka Yoshida), then a sacrifice bunt by Carlos Narváez. Wilyer Abreu's sacrifice fly to left was enough to scratch across the Sox' first run. The Astros arrived at Fenway Park looking much different than they had in the past but in pretty much the same spot: atop the AL West. Even without longtime lineup staples Alex Bregman, who signed with the Red Sox in February, and Kyle Tucker, who was traded to the Cubs in December, Houston has remained a force in pursuit of what would be a fifth consecutive division title (and eighth in nine years). Advertisement 'They pitch. They've been pitching for a while. Similar to Tampa, similar to Milwaukee,' said Red Sox manager Alex Cora, the Astros' bench coach in 2017. 'Very proud of [manager] Joe [Espada], what he's done this year with the group that he has. They pitch, man. When you pitch at this level, you have a shot. That's the reason they always have a shot.' Newcomers Helsley, Rogers and Mullins join Mets in the thick of a pennant race
NEW YORK (AP) — Pitchers Ryan Helsley and Tyler Rogers and outfielder Cedric Mullins jumped into a pennant race Friday when they joined the National League-East leading New York Mets in search of the franchise's first championship since 1986. 'Everybody's very excited — they're matching my excitement to be here,' Rogers said before the Mets opened a three-game series against San Francisco. The Giants traded Rogers to New York for José Buttó and a pair of prospects Wednesday. The Mets, who fell to the eventual World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in last year's NLCS, entered Friday with a half-game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies. 'From looking across the dugout a week ago, this is a team where you're like, man, this team is the complete package,' Rogers said as the teams met for the second straight weekend. 'So I'm very excited to be a part of it. Whatever they need from me, hopefully I can give it to them.' Helsley, who had 21 saves for the St. Louis Cardinals before being acquired for a trio of prospects Wednesday, and Rogers, a side-armer whose 392 appearances since 2019 are tied for the fourth-most in the majors, are expected to fortify a bullpen that was beginning to show vulnerability ahead of All-Star closer Edwin Díaz. 'At first I was kind of surprised, honestly, having Díaz here,' Helsley said. 'But in the playoffs, you'll take as many good arms as you can get.' Helsley said he was looking forward to serving as a set-up man for the Mets, whose bullpen ERA of 3.80 ranks 11th in the majors. New York made 36 transactions last month involving 18 relievers, including left-hander Gregory Soto, who was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles on July 25. 'If I need to throw the sixth, seventh, eighth — whenever it's going to be, I'm glad to do so,' Helsley said. Mullins, who was acquired from the Orioles on Thursday for three pitching prospects, didn't start Friday's game after arriving at Citi Field less than three hours before first pitch. He is expected to become the starter in center field, where the slumping Tyrone Taylor and converted infielder Jeff McNeil have been splitting time while Jose Siri recovers from a broken leg. Mullins, who won the Silver Slugger with the Orioles after going 30/30 in 2021, robbed the Toronto Blue Jays of a pair of homers during his final series with Baltimore earlier this week. 'I'm just trying to be myself and bring the type of game I know I can bring,' Mullins said. 'Bunch of different stuff — using my legs, running, stealing bases, playing solid defense, showing a little bit of power here and there, bunts. Just a little bit of everything.' The trades were the first as professionals for Helsley, Rogers and Mullins. 'It's pretty crazy,' Helsley said. 'I probably equate it to like the first day of school ... where everything's so new.' Rogers and Buttó, who signed with the Mets as an international free agent in 2017, are likely to make their debuts this weekend for their new clubs against their old ones. Both players flew to New York with their former teams. 'Baseball's funny that way, isn't it?' said Rogers, who was traded the same day his twin, Taylor, was sent from the Cincinnati Reds to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Taylor Rogers was dealt to the Chicago Cubs on Thursday. 'Being traded is new and then to go out there and pitch for a new team for the first time ever is going to be weird. And then to look up and see the Giants uniform in the batter's box is going to be something.' New York aired a tribute video to Butto before the first pitch of Friday's game. 'I was talking to José today, I said the timing of this might not be the greatest thing in the world,' Giants manager Bob Melvin said. 'But I think a day removed from it, I think he understands it's a business as well and he knows he's going to get a very good opportunity here.' ___ AP MLB:
