
David Stratton, legendary film critic who championed Australian and international cinema
Stratton, who has died aged 85, had an incomparable passion for celluloid storytelling. As a seven-year-old boy in England watching his childhood hero Chips Rafferty wrangling cattle in The Overlanders, Stratton had little idea that Australian films would transform his life. He left England in 1963 as a '10-pound Pom' intent on exploring Rafferty's outback for himself, but, like the protagonist John Grant in Wake in Fright, one of Stratton's favourite films, he found it menacing and dark.
Instead, he was drawn to the Sydney film festival and the prospect of seeing films for free as a volunteer usher. Three years later, in 1966, he became its director and remained so for 18 years. Much to his father's disappointment, Stratton chose to make Australia his home and the support and promotion of the Australian film industry his life's work.
Since Australia had no recognised film industry at the time, Stratton's first task as festival director was to launch short film competitions and promote untapped talent. Entries were received from names now synonymous with some of the country's best and most successful movies. By the 1970s, federal funding was in place, and with it came the rise of Australian cinema's new wave. Stratton ensured that classics such as Picnic at Hanging Rock (he saw it 'dozens of times'), Mad Max and Newsfront received international exposure, thus drawing the world's spotlight to the unique qualities of Australian cinema and its stories.
In one memorable stunt at the opening night of the 1975 film Sunday Too Far Away, 40 sheep were brought in and a city street closed off so the film's star, Jack Thompson, could give a shearing demonstration.
'[Stratton] was a warrior in the cause of finding an audience for Australian films, which was, and remains, difficult,' the writer and broadcaster Phillip Adams said.
A fan of French cinema since his teens, Stratton was also keen to introduce Australian audiences to the diversity of world cinema.
'I still vividly remember seeing Truffaut's first feature, 400 Blows, for the first time and walking out of the cinema feeling I'd seen something extraordinary,' he said.
Programming a series of Soviet films for the festival in the late 1960s resulted in Stratton being put under surveillance by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (Asio), who photographed him outside the Soviet embassy in Canberra. When he became aware of it, Stratton declared it 'a complete and staggering waste of time and money'. He had been there getting a visa to attend the Moscow film festival.
In bringing international films to Australia – and with the emerging local film industry gaining momentum – Stratton found his focus turned to overthrowing what he called the country's 'draconian censorship' laws of the 1960s.
'It was films of real stature and real importance that were being attacked by the philistines at the film censorship board at the time,' he said. 'They were ignorant, stupid people.'
Stratton was most recognisable as the white-bearded, bespectacled and avuncular co-host of The Movie Show on SBS, which ran from 1986 to 2004, and then At The Movies for a further 10 years. The good-humoured repartee between the no-nonsense Stratton and his cheerful (and stylish) co-host Margaret Pomeranz as they sparred over their star ratings and favourite films won them a devoted audience and led the Guardian to label them 'the head and heart of Australian film culture.'
Their star ratings were divisive, with fans declaring themselves either 'a David' or 'a Margaret'. One director not happy with Stratton's review of his film, Romper Stomper, was Geoffrey Wright, who called him a 'pompous windbag' and, two years later, flung a glass of wine over the critic.
David James Stratton was born on 10 September 1939 in Melksham, England, the oldest son of Wilfred and Kathleen Stratton. During the second world war, his parents were absent, his father posted overseas and his mother volunteering with the Red Cross. His grandmother became his primary carer, and every afternoon she would take David to the cinema to see a matinee. He left school in Salisbury at 16, spending his time with local film societies when not working in the family grocery business, Stratton Sons & Mead, established in 1830.
In the 2017 documentary of his life, Stratton became emotional talking about the 'fractious relationship' he had with his father, who had groomed his son to take over the family business and could not understand his interest in films.
Stratton's younger brother, Roger, said the relationship between David and his father was difficult in part 'because my brother didn't know him for the first five or six years of his life because when he came back from the war, he was a stranger'.
From 1984 to 2003, Stratton wrote reviews for the US entertainment magazine Variety, earning a reputation as their fastest critic. He had been reviewing films since he was a boy and continued to do this for every film he saw throughout his life, recording typed or handwritten details on cards filed in wooden drawers.
He was a member of the international jury at the Berlin, Montreal, Chicago and Venice film festivals and served twice as president of the international film critics jury at Cannes.
He was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 2015, and in 2001 a Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters, France's highest cultural honour, for his services to cinema.
His 2008 autobiography, I Peed on Fellini, describes an unfortunate meeting with the famous Italian director after Stratton had drunk copious amounts of champagne. He wrote several books about his favourite movies, and in 1990 began teaching film history at the University of Sydney, where he received an honorary doctorate in 2006.
He was intensely private and lived in the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, for many years with his wife, Susie Craig. No further details of his family are available.

‘We thought with The Crown: 'Is anyone going to watch this?'' director Benjamin Caron on risk, realism
It's quite a schlep from Buckingham Palace to the mean streets of working-class Portland, Oregon, but it is one that Midlands-born film-maker Benjamin Caron and actor Vanessa Kirby have undertaken with their new thriller Night Always Comes, adapted from the taut novel by Willy Vlautin. Caron and Kirby met nearly a decade ago when he directed episodes of The Crown, in which she played the young Princess Margaret from behind a cloud of cigarette smoke. Now Kirby stars as a former sex worker called Lynette, toiling in multiple jobs and living with her disabled brother (Zach Gottsagen) and their wrecked, wayward mother (Jennifer Jason Leigh). They have cobbled together the funds to buy their dilapidated house at a snip, only for Lynette's mother to recklessly blow her half on a new car. Cue one manic night in which Lynette must make back the dough, by fair means or foul, or else be turfed out on to the streets. Caron cites the Safdie brothers' Uncut Gems and Good Time as an influence on his picture's breakneck momentum. But, along with films such as Late Shift, On Falling and the forthcoming Urchin, Night Always Comes surely belongs to a wave of neo-realism that reflects our ongoing cost of living crisis. 'The idea that you can work three jobs and still not be able to afford your own home is a universal modern tragedy,' says the affable 49-year-old director. 'Lynette's story represents millions of people who are just one or two pay-cheques away from collapse. Of course, the film is in the thriller genre but I also wanted to get across the idea that nurses or caregivers or whoever are being priced out of the very cities that they help to keep running.' The situation first struck him during a visit to Los Angeles. 'I remember being genuinely shocked by seeing the housing crisis there. People are like: 'Oh, they must be drug addicts.' It's very easy to throw labels like that around. But they can't all be addicts. People are not just falling into homelessness: they're being pushed.' Wealthy characters in Night Always Comes, such as the client who recoils in disgust when Lynette tells him of her straitened circumstances, are naturally insulated from economic turbulence. This is a film where it's poor versus poor all the way, and kindness is in short supply. 'It's a cliche,' says Caron, 'but desperate people do desperate things. And the film is full of desperate people. Everyone has their reasons for doing what they do.' Kirby is in every scene, her vitality and desperation propelling the movie in much the same way as, say, Gena Rowlands in Gloria or Mikey Madison in Anora. As Lynette, she lies and schemes, steals a car, loots a safe, and isn't above taking the nearest blunt instrument to anyone who crosses her. 'Being back with Vanessa was like reuniting with a dance partner,' says Caron, with a smile. 'It's been a while but you still know the moves.' Actors bring baggage, however. The casting of Kirby – privately educated and so often labelled 'posh' that she has even moaned about it in interviews – as a traumatised, penniless sex worker, appears to plunge the film into the territory of Frankie and Johnny, which starred Michelle Pfeiffer as a dowdy, unremarkable waitress. 'You're absolutely right,' Caron says, 'but, as an actor, you want to avoid being pigeonholed. The more you can jump off the cliff, the wider range of offers you'll get. Vanessa has this unpredictable energy. There's no safety net with her, no filter. She makes these wild decisions in real time, in the middle of everything.' Don't forget, he says, that even The Crown looked risky to begin with. 'There was a moment before it went out where we were all like: 'Is anyone going to watch this?'' Similar jitters surrounded another streaming hit that became one of Caron's springboards into cinema: Andor, the gritty Star Wars spin-off that revived interest in the franchise just as Disney was in the final stages of flogging a dead Wookiee. One outwardly unorthodox choice by Andor's writer and show-runner Tony Gilroy was to put Caron, a self-confessed lapsed Star Wars fan, in charge of several episodes, including the first season's finale. The lack of reverence that Caron brought to George Lucas's universe might have been one of the keys to the show's excellence. 'You can get too drawn into trying to please the fans,' he says. 'That's a dangerous trap.' His 2023 debut, Sharper, a deliciously slippery thriller starring Julianne Moore, spent just a week in US cinemas before streaming globally on Apple TV+. As a Netflix production, Night Always Comes will likewise have only the merest brush with the big screen. This can't be what he has been dreaming of all these years. 'Oh Ryan!' he cries, throwing his hands up. 'That's so sad! Don't say that. Look, I remember in the 1980s and 90s, you'd hear about a film in America and it would take six months until it reached the UK. There was this feverish anticipation: fomo, really. And it's true that doesn't exist in the same way. But I'm a romantic. I like to think the world sort of had a stroke during Covid, and everyone retreated into their rooms and drew the curtains. Slowly, they've been coming back, blinking into the daylight. Look at Barbie and Oppenheimer. Those are moments when the audience feels that connection of sitting in a cinema and having a shared experience. For those two hours, you can be sucked into this portal and taken on a journey. Whereas, at home, you're always going to be distracted.' Perhaps the message, then, is: death to Netflix? 'No, I love Netflix,' he says. 'They changed my career: I owe so much to those guys. With The Crown, I was working with the budget of a mid-sized movie, with actors who would normally be in films. And people have bigger screens now; it's not like in the 1980s. No director would say they wouldn't love viewers to sit in the cinema and watch what they've made. But you also want lots of people to see your work. And, hopefully, a few million might watch it.' In Caron's case, it seems, Netflix always comes to the rescue. Night Always Comes is on Netflix from 15 August.

Gluck's famous opera with acrobats? It's surprisingly bloodless
A female aerial artist wearing a striking red dress tumbles down from the ceiling on a rope, symbolising the descent of the ill-fated Eurydice into the underworld. This is how Yaron Lifschitz's modern staging of Gluck's popular 1762 opera Orpheus and Eurydice begins. The show's concept, combining opera with circus, is an intriguing one, but this production from Opera Queensland – with acrobats from the Brisbane-based Circa company – feels misconceived and oddly clinical. The subterranean afterlife into which Eurydice has fallen – having been killed by a snakebite – is visualised by Lifschitz (who also designs) as a place of almost antiseptic, white minimalism. When we meet her bereft lover Orpheus – who follows her into the underworld in an attempt to persuade Hades, king of the dead, to restore his beloved to life – he is seemingly in an asylum, resting on a white table-cum-bed. It looks like something Jasper Conran might have designed for a rehab centre for Hollywood A-listers. As the fine British countertenor Iestyn Davies (playing Orpheus in a white shirt and black business suit) begins to sing of his anguish, his words appear and evaporate in smoke on the wall behind him. It isn't long before Eurydice (sung beautifully by Australian/British soprano Samantha Clarke) is appearing inside a small greenhouse (which, one assumes, is supposed to be a symbol of confinement). As the opera unfolds, Gluck's splendid late-Baroque score and Ranieri de' Calzabigi's libretto are accompanied by a small army of gymnastic artists from Brisbane company Circa. When the chorus of Scottish Opera arrive they are clad in black boiler suits. The difficulty with all of this – from the circus performance to the modish graphics and consciously fashionable design – is that it fails to make the necessary emotional connection either with Gluck's opera or the ancient myth upon which it is based. The greenhouse, in particular, reminds one of the period in the 1990s and early-2000s when every other trendy live art show – usually by students or graduates of Dartington College of Arts – seemed to feature a small glasshouse. The great frustration of the production, which premiered in Brisbane in 2019, is that the tremendous capacities of the performers – from the lead singers, the chorus and the excellent Scottish Chamber Orchestra (under the baton of Laurence Cummings) to the circus artists – are never in doubt. However, as Circa's performers slide on silks in mid-air or turn themselves into a human staircase for Orpheus to climb, the music seems almost to be at the service of the circus work, much as Ravel's Bolero served the British ice skaters Torvill and Dean in the 1980s. When, at the end, Davies's Orpheus writes the words 'The triumph of love' in blood on the wall, it seems like a moment of self-parody, so anodyne and bloodless is Lifschitz's production. Truth to tell, the piece was cheered to the rafters by sections of the audience. Had we been in Vienna in 1913 (the year of Schoenberg's famous 'scandal concert'), I suspect booing might have ensued from those who were unimpressed.
