New Cape Town hillclimb aims to dethrone famous Simola race
On 25 and 26 October 2025, vintage and modern race cars will roar up Philip Kgosana Drive in a battle for the inaugural 'King of the Mountain' crown.
Dubbed the Speed Classic Cape Town, the event is being hailed as a raw test of both driver skill and machine performance.
The 2.1km course – 200 metres longer than the famed Simola Hillclimb in Knysna – features a more technical layout that promises to push competitors to the limit.
Participation in the Speed Classic Cape Town won't be open to everyone. Entry is by invitation only (from selected applicants), with a curated grid of just 80 cars to ensure elite competition.
Entrants are selected by a committee, and applications are now open until 15 August. Drivers will be notified of the outcome of their application between 22 and 24 August.

The 2.1km course, will use the contour road that runs from Walmer Estate to the bottom of Vredehoek on the edge of the city.
Each car will launch every 30 seconds, as drivers vie for class honours and a place in the final King of the Mountain Shootout – a no-holds-barred dash to determine the event's fastest car-and-driver pairing.
Classic Car Saturday (25 October) will showcase vintage machinery in all its glory.

'I haven't been happy in the national team': Seoposenwe opens up about Banyana Banyana exit
Former Banyana Banyana forward Jermaine Seoposenwe has opened up about her decision to leave the national team. Seoposenwe announced her retirement from international soccer after the Women's Cup of Nations (Wafcon) in Morocco. She said the South African Football Association (Safa), the coaching and culture were the reasons for her unhappiness in the team, adding there were disputes when it came to negotiating prize monies for tournaments. 'It's definitely the association and treatment of us in many instances. I think I tried to wrap my head around it but it's difficult as a player, especially being overseas and in an environment where our directors and the club try to make everything as equal as possible. 'Every time we go to a major tournament, we have to fight about money and basically everything. Why do we have to fight? Why can't you plan out for the year? Fifa gives you a calendar of what we are going to do, why can't you budget for those Fifa dates? Why is it so impossible for you to do well by us?' She revealed that the squad received R15,000 bonuses for winning a match against a side not ranked in the top 20, while also getting daily allowances. She added the squad did not receive other necessities like dietitians and proper facilities. 'When you are treated the way you need to be treated, then come back to an environment that you aren't treated the way you want to be treated, it becomes difficult for you to do your job to your best of your abilities.' The 31-year-old was part of the squad that won the Wafcon tournament in 2022, gaining entry to the 2023 Fifa Women's World Cup in Australia where they were knocked out in the round of 16. She now plays for Mexican Liga MX Femenil club Monterrey. 'If you're happy in a certain environment, that's how I feel in Mexico with Rayados. I'm happy, vibrant, just a completely different person and then coming back to the national team ... seeing myself it's crazy to me sometimes, just to sit down with myself and know the difference in how I feel with my team in Mexico while I'm in the national team is not who I am.' Seoposenwe said she was not appreciated enough in the national team. 'I know what I can bring to the national team, I know what I mean to my teammates and the people of South Africa. I just felt like out of respect for everyone involved, within the national team and people of South Africa, and just the performances that I have given since I've got back, it's just not up to my standard. If I'm going to be this person, then what's the use?'

'COACHES WERE STRESSED'
A BT Football Academy team captain says he 'knew something was wrong' when cub coaches became visibly stressed out. Chad Harper is one of the lucky boys who recently returned from a tour to Spain where some of his teammates remain stranded after a fiasco that is affecting at least 19 more families. The group of 14 to 19-year-olds and their coaches had participated in the Donosti Cup 2025 in Spain. They were told the total fee was R48 500. This was meant to include everything: kits, bags, food, transport, accommodation, and flights. Everything went well, until the day they were set to return on 16 July, when they learned they were not going home because their return flights had not been booked. BT Academy has cited delayed visa appointments as the reason it failed to book return flights in time, leading to unaffordable prices and leaving the group of 38 stranded. Chad explained: 'Coaches had to buy supper with their own money and cook for us past 10pm. We ate and then went to sleep. 'The next day, the coaches were clearly stressed. As the team captain, they pulled me aside and explained that 'We might not be leaving tonight'. They didn't want to go into detail. My teammates were frustrated.' Eventually they were kicked out of the hotel. The coaches then approached the embassy. He added: 'One coach pulled me aside again, saying, 'We need to keep the kids calm.' I had to help keep up the morale of the team. Players started getting frustrated. Eventually, the coaches returned. 'On Thursday, a message went out to parents saying an additional R15 000 was needed for us to come home. That wasn't part of the contract. I was stressed, not just for myself but for the other kids.' BT have said: 'Please understand that we are working around the clock to find solutions to bring all players back home as soon as possible.'
