Novak Djokovic sparks US Open injury fears as he pulls out of Cincinnati Open in shock announcement

Daily Mail3 days ago
Tennis fans are preparing to flock to Flushing Meadows in a few weeks time for the 2025 edition of the US Open. But recent news could have some worried about the absence of a former champion.
On Monday, the organizers of the Cincinnati Open confirmed that Novak Djokovic would be withdrawing from the tournament.
The Cincinnati Open is the final ATP 1000 event before the US Open starts in New York City in about three weeks.
The 38-year-old Djokovic has made the semifinals at all three grand slam tournaments in 2025 - but hasn't reached the final since Wimbledon in 2024 and hasn't won since the US Open in 2023.
Djokovic was a seven-seed in Melbourne when he fell to second-seed Alexander Zverev of Germany.
He followed that up with back-to-back defeats to world No. 1 Jannik Sinner at Roland Garros and at Wimbledon. After losing in France to Carlos Alcaraz, Sinner would take Wimbledon off the Spaniard.
Djokovic lost his Wimbledon semifinal in straight sets - 3-6, 3-6, 4-6 - and appeared hampered by an awkward fall he took on the grass toward the end of his quarterfinal win over Flavio Cobolli.

Djokovic, already the most prolific grand slam men's champion in history, admitted that his age is getting to him.
'I guess playing best-of-five, particularly this year, has been a real struggle for me physically,' Djokovic said after Wimbledon.
'The longer the tournament goes, the worse the condition gets. I reach the final stages, I reach the semis of every Slam this year, but I have to play Sinner or [Carlos] Alcaraz. These guys are fit, young, sharp.
'I feel like I'm going into the match with tank half empty. It's just not possible to win a match like that.'
So while the decision to skip the tournament in Ohio may raise some concern, it could also serve as a smart decision to give the Serbian star more rest before the final major of the year.
Djokovic will hope to win a fifth title in Flushing Meadows - having previously done so in 2011, 2015, 2018, and 2023.
The Serbian beat Rafael Nadal in 2011, Roger Federer in 2015, Juan Martin del Potro in 2018, and Daniil Medvedev in 2023.

Emma Raducanu's reason for axing countless coaches as Rafael Nadal's former ally appointed

Emma Raducanu will be without a full-time coach as she attempts to revive her career on the WTA Tour, but the British No. 1 has added Rafael Nadal's former mentor, Francisco Roig, to her team British tennis star Emma Raducanu has appointed Rafael Nadal's former mentor, Francisco Roig, to join her coaching carousel. The move follows Raducanu's candid admission about her high turnover of coaches, suggesting her relentless questioning might be overwhelming for some. ‌ The young tennis sensation has had a revolving door of coaches in recent years, including Nigel Sears, Vladimir Platenik, Nick Cavaday, Sebastian Sachs and US Open ally Andrew Richardson. Speaking to BBC Radio 4 in 2023, the Grand Slam winner confessed her "challenging" nature and constant probing could be why she has seen so many mentors come and go. ‌ "I ask my coaches a lot of questions," she said, via the Daily Express."On certain occasions, they haven't been able to keep up with the questions I've asked, and maybe that's why it ended. ‌ "It's something I've always done. I keep provoking and asking questions to coaches and challenging their thinking as well. I'm not someone that you can just tell me what to do and I'll do it, I need to understand why and then I'll do it." Fresh from her exit at the Canadian Open, where she was bested by American Amanda Anisimova, Raducanu is set to compete in the Cincinnati Open. This tournament will serve as her final tune-up before the US Open later in August, with Roig now part of her entourage. Mark Petchey has been assisting Raducanu on a casual basis since March, but with his media duties during the US hardcourt season, Raducanu will turn to Nadal's former mentor for support. The duo, who discussed plans at Wimbledon, are now focused on boosting Raducanu's rankings in time to secure seeding for the year's fourth and final Grand Slam. Raducanu's quest for a stable coaching relationship has been challenging as she has cycled through seven significant coaching partnerships since her 2021 US Open triumph. Nonetheless, her recent performances under Petchey's guidance, particularly her fierce match against Aryna Sabalenka at Wimbledon, have shown progress. Despite a commendable showing against the world No. 1 and exiting the tournament, Raducanu's efforts indicated a successful upturn in form. However, Petchey himself acknowledged in July that he couldn't commit to a full-time coaching position due to his television work. ‌ "I think at the moment we are a bit more short-term," he said. "Our situation is a little fluid at the moment. I am going to help her this week as much as I can. I have some other commitments I can't get out of. "We are very aware she needs a second coach to come on board and maybe just one coach, not me, as well. All I am trying to do is facilitate the best possible environment for Emma to produce the tennis she can. "Whether that involves me or does not involve me is not a question that I'm worried about. We are just trying to find something that will be stable or good for her." ‌ Raducanu will hope Roig's guidance benefits her game on court. The Spanish coach certainly understands what it takes to achieve greatness, having worked alongside 22-time Grand Slam champion Nadal for most of his illustrious career. Speaking previously to L'Equipe in 2022 about his approach with the tennis legend, Roig, whose partnership with Matteo Berrettini was short-lived, revealed that pushing through adversity was a key element of his support for Nadal: "There were many periods when he couldn't work as hard as he would have liked because of physical problems. "There were many periods when he couldn't work as hard as he would have liked because of physical problems. The more time passed, the more demanding he became of himself in training. Quality eventually took precedence over volume, but it was rare to see him finish sessions satisfied."

Heung-Min Son admits LAFC ‘wasn't first choice' in debut press conference with club

Heung-min Son has revealed that Los Angeles FC (LAFC) was 'not his first choice' when seeking a new club, after he decided to leave Tottenham Hotspur after 10 years at the north London team. The former Spurs captain admitted during an introductory press conference on Wednesday (6 August) that he had been persuaded by LAFC general manager John Thorrington to join the team. 'When I talked to John after the season finished, he just changed my mind. He changed my heart. He changed my brain. He showed me the destination where I should be. Right now, I'm here. I'm more than happy.' Son, who announced he was leaving Spurs following 173 goals in 454 appearances on Saturday (2 August), said he will show the US 'something exciting', before joking: 'Are we calling it football or soccer now?'

Son Heung-min makes frank admission over record-breaking MLS move

Son Heung-min has completed a record-breaking transfer to Los Angeles FC, admitting the Major League Soccer club was not his initial preferred destination despite their successful persuasion. The 33-year-old's move, valued at over £20million, marks the highest transfer fee ever paid by an MLS club. During his 10-year tenure, Son scored 173 goals in 454 appearances, and recently captained the club to Europa League glory. Speaking at his introductory press conference in Los Angeles, the South Korea international confessed that LAFC had "changed his heart" regarding the move to the United States, where he has signed an initial two-year deal. The South Korea national team captain also admitted he "had to be persuaded of the merits" of the transfer. 'They've been absolutely working so hard to get me here to join LAFC,' Son said. 'If I'm honest it was not my first choice but John (Thorrington, LAFC general manager) was the first call when the season finished and John changed my mind, he changed my heart. 'I'm so happy to see all the Korean fans, I was at the game and I saw you supporting like crazy and I wanted to run on the pitch and show my performance. I'm here to win and I will perform. 'I will definitely show you something exciting in… are we calling it football or soccer? I will definitely show you some exciting football and we will have success.' Son added that the decision to leave Spurs had left him feeling 'very empty'. 'I felt like I gave it all, but I felt like I needed a new chapter and new challenge and I chose LAFC. I'm old but I still have good physicality, good legs and I still have good quality.' Earlier Son had issued a heartfelt message to Tottenham fans on making the 'hardest decision ever' to leave north London. 'How to find the right words for this? I don't know. I have been thinking for days. It's impossible. But here I go,' Son wrote. 'It's time for me to say goodbye to Tottenham Hotspur. My home for the past decade. 'When I arrived in 2015, I didn't speak English, I didn't know London, but you welcomed me with open arms, believed in me, and stood by me through every high and low. 'I was just a boy from Korea with big dreams who was supposed to have no chance. And now, 10 years later, North London is in my heart forever. 'I've made friends for life here, had the honour of becoming a godfather here, and had the privilege of captaining our special club here. I've poured my heart and soul into this club, which makes this the hardest decision ever. 'I thought if I was ever going to leave, it would have to be on my terms, on the best terms, when our mission had been accomplished together. With pride and honour.' Son joined Spurs in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen. Alongside old partner in crime Harry Kane, Son holds the record for the most goal involvements by a duo in the Premier League, with the pair assisting each other on a record 47 occasions in the competition. Son's performance helped turn Tottenham into title contenders when they finished second in the Premier League under Mauricio Pochettino in 2017, finishing as runners-up in the Champions League two years later. After Kane left for Bayern Munich, Son became Spurs captain under Ange Postecoglou, lifting the Europa League trophy in May – having come off the bench in the final against Manchester United, a 1-0 Spurs win, after an injury-affected campaign. The popular South Korean will renew acquaintances with Hugo Lloris and move to Los Angeles, which boasts one of the largest Korean populations in the world, ahead of next summer's World Cup in the United States.
