DBKL aims for 70% of residents to use public transport by 2040

The Kuala Lumpur Local Plan has a strong focus on the city's public transport network, said mayor Maimunah Sharif.
KUALA LUMPUR : The Kuala Lumpur Local Plan (PTKL) aims for 70% of the public to be using public transport by 2040, says city mayor Maimunah Sharif.
This is in conjunction with PTKL 2040's primary goal of shaping Kuala Lumpur into an all-inclusive 'green' city. In particular, DBKL aims to implement an efficient, low-carbon mobility system city-wide.
With 191 initiatives outlined in the plan, PTKL's 'City for All' theme places a heavy focus on sustainability, with the development and maintenance of green spaces a key concept in its spatial planning.
During a press briefing, Maimunah said DBKL might provide incentives to increase population density around transit zones where LRT or MRT stations are located.
'This is common in Japan, where people work, live, and play around transit zones. This helps lessen congestion and steers us in the direction of a low-carbon city,' she said.
Much of PTKL 2040's zoning revolves around coordinating with the framework of Kuala Lumpur's railway systems, especially the upcoming MRT3 network.
PTKL aims to create a transport network that allows the public to go from place to place with a walking distance of less than 400m.
There have been various public concerns regarding the accessibility of Kuala Lumpur's public transport system in recent years.
Transport think tank My Mobility Vision identified first- and last-mile connectivity as one of the primary issues steering the public towards private vehicle use.
Last month, deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the use of public transport in Malaysia was still low at around 25%.
Zahid suggested that this could be improved with a shift in user attitudes through a combination of reliable public transport systems and comprehensive awareness campaigns.

Ringgit ends lower amid profit-taking

KUALA LUMPUR : The ringgit closed lower today, snapping three consecutive days of gains as profit-taking emerged, with traders opting to lock in earlier gains. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the ringgit recorded a sharp rise earlier in the day, reaching as high as RM4.1860 during the morning session, before the US dollar–ringgit pair climbed to RM4.2088 later in the day. He noted that the US dollar/ringgit had crossed the psychological threshold of RM4.20, but profit-taking activities may have emerged as traders sought to lock in gains. 'At the current juncture, enthusiasm for an interest rate cut by the US Federal Reserve (Fed) has gained momentum, and it is taking a toll on the US dollar. 'The impression that the Fed might be behind the curve in managing the monetary policy could also have contributed to the weakness in the US dollar,' he told Bernama. At 6pm, the local note slipped to 4.2090/4.2145 from yesterday's close of 4.2040/4.2085. At the close, the ringgit ended mostly lower against major currencies, except the euro, against which it appreciated to 4.9170/4.9234 from 4.9305/4.9357. It fell versus the Japanese yen to 2.8703/2.8742 from yesterday's close of 2.8554/2.8586 and decreased vis-a-vis the British pound to 5.7146/5.7220 from 5.7078/5.7139. The ringgit traded mostly higher against regional peers. It strengthened versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2849/3.2895 from 3.2864/3.2902 at yesterday's close, rose versus the Thai baht to 13.0004/13.0238 from 13.0276/13.0476, and was higher against the Philippine peso to 7.39/7.41 from 7.41/7.42. However, the local note depreciated against the Indonesian rupiah to 261.1/261.6 from 259.4/259.8.

Tabung Haji calls RM20m rebranding allegation ‘false and slanderous'

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 — Lembaga Tabung Haji (TH) has dismissed claims that it spent RM20 million on a rebranding exercise, calling the allegation 'false and slanderous'. In a statement today, TH said such claims were inaccurate and stressed that strengthening its brand remains important even after 60 years of operations. 'TH has enhanced its brand several times before. These efforts are a crucial investment to shift mindsets and encourage Muslims to save systematically to meet Haj requirements,' it said. TH clarified that the actual budget for brand rejuvenation is only RM2 million per year over a three-year period. The exercise includes extensive market surveys and engagement with depositors to better understand their needs. The statement noted that demographic changes among Malaysia's Muslims have had a significant impact. TH has 9.6 million depositors — around 50 per cent of the country's Muslim population — with over 80 per cent of transactions now conducted digitally. More than 53 per cent of depositors have savings of less than RM1,300, far from sufficient for Haj preparations. 'The cost of performing the Haj for a low-income (B40) pilgrim in 2025 is RM15,000,' it added. TH said it plans campaigns to encourage early, consistent, and systematic savings to help Muslims build enough funds for haj while ensuring sustainable investments for the institution. The board of directors will also review its strategy to remain competitive, provide top-quality service, and attract more Malaysians — especially young people — to become depositors.

China's top diplomat to visit India for border talks

BEIJING, Aug 16 — China's top diplomat will visit India next week for talks about their shared boundary, Beijing's foreign ministry said today, as the two countries eye resuming border trade five years after halting it. 'From August 18 to 20... (Chinese foreign minister) Wang Yi will upon invitation visit India and hold the 24th special representatives meeting on the China-India border issue,' a spokesperson said in a statement. Past trade between the neighbours across icy and high-altitude Himalayan border passes was usually small in volume, but any resumption is significant for its symbolism. It stopped following a deadly 2020 clash between border troops. Indian media had reported earlier in the week that China's Wang was expected for talks in New Delhi on Monday. His Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar visited Beijing in July. The two major economic powers have long competed for strategic influence across South Asia. However, caught in global trade and geopolitical turbulence triggered by US President Donald Trump's tariff regime, they have moved to mend ties. In recent weeks, Chinese and Indian officials have said the two countries were discussing resuming border trade. Agreements to resume direct flights and issue tourist visas also have been seen as part of an effort to rebuild their relationship. — AFP
