
The Grand Canyon's Dragon Bravo wildfire sheds light on water infrastructure
A chlorine gas leak had erupted from the park's water treatment facility as the building burned, forcing firefighters to pull back. The water treatment facility is part of a system that draws water from a fragile spring. It's the only water source and system for the park facilities on both rims, including visitor lodging and park service housing.
The fire also damaged some of the area's water pipes and equipment, leaving fire crews to rely on a fleet of large water trucks to haul in water and raising concerns about contamination risks to the water system itself.
By mid-August, Dragon Bravo was a 'megafire,' having burned over 140,000 acres, and was one of the largest fires in Arizona history. It had destroyed more than 70 structures, including the iconic Grand Canyon Lodge, and sent smoke across the region.
Wildfires like this are increasingly affecting water supplies across the U.S. and creating a compounding crisis that experts in water, utilities and emergency management are only beginning to wrestle with.
A pattern across the West
Before 2017, when the Tubbs Fire burned through neighborhoods on the edge of Santa Rosa, California, most research on the nexus of wildfire and water had focused on issues such as drought and how climate change effects ecosystems.
The Tubbs Fire destroyed thousands of buildings and also melted plastic water pipes. After the fire, a resident's complaint about the taste and odor of tap water led to the discovery that the fire's damage had introduced contaminants including benzene, a carcinogen, into parts of the public water system.
It quickly became obvious that the damage discovered at the Tubbs Fire was not unique.
Similar damage and pollutants were discovered in another California water system after the 2018 Camp Fire destroyed much of Paradise, a town of over 25,000 people.
The list of incidents goes on.
In southern Oregon, the 2020 Almeda Fire damaged water pipes in buildings, leaving water to flow freely. That contributed to low system pressure just when people fighting the fire needed the water.
In Colorado, the 2021 Marshall Fire burned through urban water lines, damaging six public drinking-water systems along with more than 1,000 structures in the Boulder suburbs. All six systems lost power, which in some cases led to a loss of water pressure, hampering firefighting.
As firefighters worked on the Marshall Fire, water system operators raced to keep water flowing and contaminants from being transported into the water systems. But tests still detected chemical contamination, including benzene, in parts of the systems a few weeks later.
Then, in January 2025, the Los Angeles fires supercharged concerns about water and wildfire. As firefighters raced to put out multiple fires, hydrants ran dry in some parts of the region, while others at higher elevations depressurized. Ultimately, over 16,000 structures were damaged, leading to insured losses estimated to be as high as US$45 billion.
Water infrastructure is not merely collateral damage during wildfires—it is now a central concern.
It also raises the question: What can residents, first responders and decision-makers reasonably expect from water systems that weren't designed with today's disasters in mind?
Addressing the growing fire and water challenge
While no two water systems or fires are the same, nearly every water system component, ranging from storage tanks to pipelines to treatment plants, is susceptible to damage.
The Grand Canyon's Roaring Springs system exemplifies the complexity and fragility of older systems. It supplies water to both rims of the park through a decades-old network of gravity-fed pipes and tunnels and includes the water treatment facility where firefighters were forced to retreat because of the chlorine leak.
Many water systems have vulnerable points within or near flammable wildlands, such as exposed pump houses that are crucial for pulling water from lower elevations to where it is needed.
In addition, hazardous materials such as chlorine or ammonia may be stored on-site and require special considerations in high fire risk areas. Staff capacity is often limited; some small utilities depend on a single operator, and budgets may be too constrained to modernize aging infrastructure or implement fire mitigation measures.
As climate change intensifies wildfire seasons, these vulnerabilities can become disaster risks that require making water infrastructure a more integral part of fighting and preparing for wildfires.
Ways to help everyone prepare
As a researcher with Arizona State University's Julie Ann Wrigley Global Futures Laboratory, I have been working with colleagues and fire and water systems experts on strategies to help communities and fire and water managers prepare.
Here are a few important lessons:
Prioritizing fire-resistant construction, better shielding of chemicals and, in some cases, decentralizing water systems can help protect critical facilities, particularly in high-risk zones. Having backup power supplies, mobile treatment systems and alternate water sources are essential to provide more security in the face of a wildfire.
Emergency command protocols and interagency coordination are most effective when they include water utilities as essential partners in all phases of emergency response, from planning to response to recovery. Fire crews and water operators can also benefit from joint training in emergency response, especially when system failure could hinder firefighting itself.
Longer term, protecting upstream watersheds from severe fire by thinning forests and using controlled burns, along with erosion control measures, can help maintain water quality and reduce water pollution in the aftermath of fires.
Smaller and more isolated systems, particularly in tribal or low-income communities, often need assistance to plan or implement new measures. These systems may require technical assistance, and regional support hubs could support communities with additional resources, including personnel and equipment, so they can respond quickly when crises strike.
Looking ahead
The Dragon Bravo Fire isn't just a wildfire story, it's also a water story, and it signals a larger, emerging challenge across the West. As fire seasons expand in size and complexity, the overlap between fire and water will only grow.
The Grand Canyon fire offers a stark illustration of how wildfire can escalate into a multifaceted infrastructure crisis: Fire can damage water infrastructure, which in turn limits firefighting capabilities and stresses water supplies.

Californians brace for worst multiday heatwave of the year
Californians are bracing for the first major heatwave of the year, a multiday scorcher that could pose significant threats to public health and sharply heighten wildfire risks. After a notably cooler summer, temperatures are expected to spike across the American south-west starting on Wednesday and extending through the weekend, as severe conditions expand north along the coast into British Columbia by the end of the week. The extreme weather event will create a trio of compounding dangers, with a heightened chance of thunderstorms also predicted alongside the heat and fire risks. The National Weather Service has issued a swath of heat advisories, watches and warnings, along with red-flag alerts, warning the public to prepare. Temperatures could break local daily records in Los Angeles and across Arizona. The heat will also linger after the sun sets, offering little reprieve overnight. 'Widespread record warm overnight minimum temperatures' are possible through the west, according to climate scientist Daniel Swain, who shared an analysis of the upcoming event on his website. High nighttime temperatures will add challenges to containing fires that erupt and increase the dangers for people unable to access cooling. 'This heatwave may be most notable for sustained overnight warmth in some cases,' Swain said, 'with minimum temperatures not dropping below 70-80F.' August is typically hot across this region. But for Californians who haven't acclimated to high temperatures this year, the sharp shift could create health challenges. Those facing the greatest hazards will be outdoor workers, unhoused people and vulnerable populations, including children and seniors. Extreme heat, often called a 'silent killer', already ranks as the most lethal weather-related disaster in the US, and deaths are increasing. Fueled by the climate crisis, and often exacerbated by concrete cityscapes that cook when temperatures rise, heatwaves are getting longer, larger and more intense. Many areas that will be affected by this week's heat event were also already primed to burn, including across areas of Los Angeles and Ventura counties. An extreme lack of moisture across southern California this year has left hillsides parched, overgrown and prone to ignite. But the heat could further cure vegetation, setting the stage for rapid fire growth and extreme behavior, according to the NWS. 'California wildfire risk will likely reach its peak during this event between Thursday and Saturday,' Swain said. While these fires aren't expected to be amplified by strong gusty winds, developing thunderstorms could add erratic breezy conditions and lightning could ignite new blazes. To prepare for the added threats, California's governor Gavin Newsom has pre-deployed resources into high-risk areas, including 32 fire engines, nine water tenders, nine bulldozers, five helicopters, nine hand crews, 13 dispatchers and two incident management teams. It has already been a busy year of fire across the country, and more than 44,400 blazes have ignited, roughly 16% higher than the 10-year average. Canada's 'exceptional' drought hints at future climate, need for action: experts
Canada must prepare for more seasons marked by severe drought, experts say as this summer's bone-dry conditions tormented farmers, strained municipal water supply and fuelled one of the worst wildfire seasons on record. Seventy-one per cent of the country was either abnormally dry or under drought conditions as of the end of July, according to the federal government's drought monitor released last week. Drought-stricken communities across the country have urged residents to cut back on water and some have instituted outright bans on most outdoor water activities to help preserve their drinking water. What has stood out about this year is just how widespread those drought conditions have become, said John Pomeroy, one of Canada's leading hydrologists. The only other year in recent memory when drought was so widespread was 2023, he said. "It's a coast-to-coast-to-coast drought. So that's quite exceptional," said Pomeroy, the director of the Global Water Futures Observatories project at the University of Saskatchewan. He called the "bone-dry" conditions in typically wet Newfoundland and Nova Scotia "mind-boggling." As climate change, driven by the burning of fossil fuels, is expected to increase the likelihood and severity of drought, experts say Canada needs to accelerate the transition to clean energy while also increasing the country's resilience to these extremes. "This year is a sign, a signal of the types of conditions we will experience more frequently and that we need to be prepared for moving forward," said Ryan Ness, the director of adaptation research at the Canadian Climate Institute think tank. "Water efficiency is going to be critical -- making the best use out of the water that we have rather than, say, spraying it away to water lawns in urban areas." Canada is home to 20 per cent of the world's freshwater but less than half of it is naturally renewed through the hydrological cycle. It's otherwise tied up in glaciers and underground aquifers, or large lakes where replenishment is slow. More than half of the renewable freshwater, meanwhile, flows north to the Arctic Ocean and Hudson Bay, putting it out of reach to the vast majority of Canada's population. What remains, while still abundant, is "heavily used and often overly stressed," the federal government says. Climate change is adding to that stress, studies show. The threat of drought is likely to increase across many regions of the country, including the already drought-prone Prairies and interior British Columbia. It's also expected to lead to earlier and faster snowmelt, drying out basins that depend on that water. "Canada is often seen as a land of endless water, with countless lakes, rivers and water. But we should be careful," said University of Ottawa's Hossein Bonakdari, who has studied climate change and drought risks. Beyond the tap, this year's drought impacts are being felt in Canada's farm fields, its forests, and its depleted hydropower stations. Dry conditions have contributed to Canada's second-worst wildfire season on record, dating back to the early 1970s. The fires have burned through an area slightly larger than New Brunswick. In Manitoba, where large swathes of the province are under extreme drought, the major hydro utility says its system inflows are the lowest recorded in the past 40 years for this time of year. Manitoba Hydro says it can meet its energy demand under the lowest-recorded drought conditions, but it's too early to say how another year of drought may impact its finances. Last year, citing drought conditions, the provincial Crown corporation reported a $157-million loss in part because there was less of its energy to export and it had to import power to meet its requirements. In the fields, while most of the Prairies' spring-planted crops are forecasted by Agriculture Canada to have solid yields this year, the drought has been ruinous in some hard-hit areas. Some rural municipalities have declared agricultural disasters and famers have had to sell their herds or haul in water to satiate thirsty livestock in some drought-stricken areas, said David Lee, the manager of the federal government's National Agriculture Climate Information Service. While some of those areas have seen conditions improve since the end of July, many of the crops are already too far along for recent rainfall to make a difference, he said. "It took a long time to get there; it's going to take a long time to go back out," Lee said of places afflicted by multi-year drought, such as northern Saskatchewan. There are many ways Canada can become more resilient to drought, said Ness, the adaptation director at the Canadian Climate Institute. Governments should support farmers to develop drought plans and incorporate water-efficient agriculture, he said. Communities should be adopting more wildfire prevention design guidelines. Wetlands must be protected, he said. Canada is also seeing a surge in energy-intensive artificial intelligence data centres that use significant amounts of waters for cooling. The recent drought conditions highlight the importance of carefully considering water availability in large industrial and infrastructure investment decisions, said Ness. Yet, "the most important thing that we need to do to mitigate this growing drought risk is reduce greenhouse gas emissions," he said. "We need to get on top of it as soon as possible by both preparing and adapting but also ultimately cutting off those emissions that are continuing to make the problem worse." Droughts can also worsen the impacts of extreme rainfall when it eventually hits, said Pomeroy, the hydrologist. Drought kills off vegetation and dries out soil, leading to less water absorption and more runoff, he said. "So that is unfortunately what they should already be thinking about preparing for in Eastern Canada, now is what comes next," said Pomeroy. Oregon crews race to douse fire in one of the world's tallest trees
Firefighters in Oregon are racing to save the Doerner Fir - one of the world's tallest and oldest trees - from a fire that has been burning since Saturday. The giant fir, more than 325ft (99m) tall and estimated to be over 450 years old, has already lost about 50ft to the blaze, which may jeopardise its standing in global height rankings, officials say. With more hot and dry weather forecast along Oregon's Coast Range, firefighters are struggling to put the fire out. Officials have discussed some unconventional ways to put out the blaze including building scaffolding to reach and suppress flames higher up the tree. The cause of the blaze remains unknown, though lightening has been ruled out. On Tuesday, an infrared drone found no active flames or smoke at the top of the tree, but it detected heat inside a cavity in the trunk some 280 ft high, federal Bureau of Land Management spokesperson Megan Harper told the BBC. Ms Harper told ABC News that the fire may impact the tree's standing in global height rankings. "We've lost about 50 ft of it, just from fire and pieces falling out," she said, noting that the 50 ft were lost through the top burning. "So I don't know where it'll stand after this, but it's still a magnificent tree." She also said there was not a risk of the tree fully burning down. "The tree is so big, it's got so much mass that it would take a while for it to burn all the way through the tree," she said. The Coos Forest Protective Association has said helicopter bucket drops have reduced fire activity near the top, while sprinklers and containment lines have been set up around the base.
