Electricity Ministry and Gulf Air Group sign renewable energy framework

Minister Humaidan highlighted the private sector's role in advancing renewable energy objectives and leveraging opportunities provided by the national renewable energy plan. He commended GFG for supporting national efforts to optimise energy use and adopting advanced technologies to achieve its aspirations in this field.
Taqi underscored that the strategic partnership with the Ministry of Electricity and Water Affairs aligns with the group's ongoing efforts to support Bahrain's transition to a low-carbon, sustainable economy. He reiterated the group's commitment to national directives promoting renewable energy and supporting initiatives for sustainable development.
The Chairman noted that this commitment aligns with Bahrain's goals to reduce carbon emissions by 30% by 2035 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2060, contributing to a greener and more sustainable future for the Kingdom.
The framework aims to provide technical support and consultancy from the Ministry of Electricity and Water Affairs to GFG for integrating renewable energy solutions and enhancing energy efficiency across its buildings and facilities.

This important announcement was made on the occasion of the signing of an MoU between Bahrain Airport Company (BAC), the operator and managing body of Bahrain International Airport, and Artelia Airports. The MoU outlines cooperation in the field of Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer (ORAT) and aims to strengthen the consulting capabilities of both parties in the aviation sector. The signing took place during the Paris Air Show 2025, held from June 16 to 22. The MOU was signed in the presence of His Excellency Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications. It was signed by Gulf Air Group (GFG) Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Jeffrey Goh on behalf of BAC and Executive Director of Artelia Airports, Mr. Philippe Martinet. The MOU aims to develop new business opportunities and cooperate in providing specialized consultancy services in the field of ORAT, by integrating the technical and operational expertise of both parties. It focuses on adopting an integrated approach that ensures early stakeholder engagement, risk identification and management, and enhancing operational efficiency and sustainability, thereby ensuring the airport's full readiness before the commencement of operational activities. Private sector power shift cuts costs
Handing electricity production over to the private sector has helped cut running costs and sharpen output, Electricity and Water Affairs Minister, His Excellency Yasser Humaidan, told Parliament. He said this approach lifts a weight off public finances, as the government no longer has to foot the bill for new power stations, an outlay that would otherwise run into large sums. 'The move towards independent power production began over two decades ago,' he said. 'It's worked well. Costs have dropped, and efficiency has improved, thanks to modern technology and a flexible way of meeting growing demand.' Humaidan said that generating one kilowatt-hour of electricity costs 21.7 fils, while transmission and distribution add another 7.5 fils. Electricity subsidies last year stood at BD161 million, he said, with BD105 million going to the first tier of household bills.
