VIDEO: Massive crowd gathers ahead of Vijay's TVK Maanadu in Madurai
Actor and TVK president Vijay is scheduled to address the cadres during the party's second State conference at an open ground in Parapathi of Madurai district of Tamil Nadu.
Why is today's Madurai conference significant for TVK?
This is the second large-scale state gathering of TVK since its launch, and it comes at a crucial time as the party gears up for its first-ever Tamil Nadu Assembly poll contest in 2026.
Vijay and his team are expected to use the event to consolidate support, energise cadres, and set the tone for a campaign that promises to challenge Tamil Nadu's traditional political order.
What is Vijay's political pitch?
At the launch of the party's exclusive membership app, 'Now TVK', on 13 August, Vijay compared the upcoming 2026 polls to two historic turning points in Tamil Nadu politics — 1967, when CN Annadurai's DMK rose to power, and 1977, when MG Ramachandran's AIADMK swept into office.
'In both these elections, newcomers opposed entrenched power and emerged victorious,' Vijay said, adding that his own party could script a similar chapter if it remains rooted in people's concerns. Quoting Annadurai, he urged TVK workers to 'go to people, live with them, learn from them and plan along with them.'
How does Vijay plan to reach voters?
The party's strategy has been branded as the 'Tamil Nadu in Victory Rally', under which cadres are tasked with reaching 'every town, street and house' to unite families as TVK members. The focus, Vijay has stressed, must be on grassroot-level engagement rather than mere political spectacle.
What controversies has Vijay raised recently?
The TVK leader has already sharpened his attack on the ruling MK Stalin-led DMK government, condemning the arrest of sanitation workers in Chennai. In a strongly worded post on X, Vijay called the action 'inhumane and anarchic,' describing it as an example of a 'fascist government' suppressing peaceful protests.
Can Vijay replicate the success of Tamil Nadu's past film stars in politics?
While Vijay draws frequent comparisons with leaders like Annadurai and MGR, analysts note a key difference: both those leaders had significant political experience before their decisive victories, whereas Vijay only formally entered politics in 2024.
Nonetheless, the scale of mobilisation around today's Madurai conference signals that his appeal remains strong among a section of the electorate.
What lies ahead?
With the 2026 Assembly elections still a year away, TVK has time to expand its organisational reach across the state. The Madurai conference is expected to provide a glimpse into the party's electoral narrative — a mix of anti-establishment rhetoric, grassroots mobilisation, and Vijay's star power.

TVK resolutions focus on caste killings, jobs, safety, environment
1 2 3 4 5 6 Madurai: Facing criticism for its silence after the recent caste killing of dalit youth Kavin Selvaganesh in Tirunelveli, TVK president Vijay brought the issue to the forefront at the party's second state-level conference in Madurai on Thursday. One of its key resolutions called on TN govt to enact a separate law to tackle caste killings. "Tamil Nadu, which once stood as a moral compass for social justice, now hangs its head in shame," the resolution said. "Even high court expressed concern over the rise in caste killings. Govt's refusal to enact a separate law, despite having the authority to do so, is unacceptable. TVK calls for immediate legislation to protect all communities and prevent such killings," it added. With more than four lakh govt posts lying vacant, the resolution said lakhs of youth are being denied fair employment. It urged DMK govt to abandon outsourcing and fill vacancies only through TNPSC and other recruitment boards, with priority for Tamil-medium graduates. Govt's failure to prevent violence against women and children, as well as unchecked drug peddling near schools and colleges, created a climate of fear and insecurity, said a resolution. TVK reiterated its opposition to the proposed airport at Parandur, saying the project threatened more than 5,700acres of fertile farmland and 13 water bodies crucial for drinking water and flood protection in Chennai and Kancheepuram. The party urged Union and state govts to find an alternative site. TVK demanded free and fair elections, criticising large-scale deletions in electoral rolls, particularly in Bihar, warning of "a similar special summary revision" in TN. The party further condemned Union and state govts' failure to protect TN fishermen and called for recovery or leasing of Katchatheevu islet (ceded by India to Sri Lanka in 1974) for 99 years to ensure a lasting solution. Parliament Session Over, Amit Shah Crafts BJP's Poll Push in South
New Delhi: The monsoon session of Parliament wrapped up, Union Home Minister Amit Shah has shifted focus to the southern battlegrounds of Kerala and Tamil Nadu, signalling the BJP's intent to expand its footprint in states where it has long remained a marginal force. On Thursday evening, Mr Shah landed in Kerala's Kochi to chair a key meeting of the BJP state leaders at the Renai Hotel, Palarivattom. The gathering, due on Friday morning, brings together senior leaders including Prakash Javadekar and state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar to chalk out strategies for the local body polls in November and the 2026 Assembly elections. This marks the first of Mr Shah's monthly reviews in Kerala, where the BJP has set itself the ambitious goal of winning around 20 per cent of local body wards, with a particular push in Thiruvananthapuram, Thrissur, and several municipalities. By projecting itself as a clean, development-driven alternative, the party is looking to erode both LDF and UDF vote shares, banking on the recent Lok Sabha momentum and narrow misses in the 2020 civic polls. From Kerala, Mr Shah will head to Tirunelveli in southern Tamil Nadu on Saturday to oversee booth-level mobilisation across the Kumari Mandalam, which covers five Lok Sabha constituencies including Tenkasi, Virudhunagar, Thoothukudi, and Kanyakumari. The meeting is particularly significant for state BJP president Nainar Nagendran who is from Tirunelveli. Mr Shah is also likely to visit Mr Nagendran's home for lunch, in a gesture aimed at rallying cadres and consolidating local support. The region is crucial for the BJP, which performed relatively better here in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, even finishing second in some constituencies. The visit also comes on the heels of actor Vijay's high-profile Madurai rally, where he took on both BJP and the DMK, underscoring the churn in Tamil Nadu's political landscape. Madurai and its surrounding districts form part of southern Tamil Nadu, where the BJP sees potential to grow, especially in constituencies where the AIADMK has weakened and local discontent with the DMK government is rising. The BJP leadership is hoping that a sustained southern push will allow it to consolidate the Hindu vote in southern Tamil Nadu, a region where it has pockets of influence but little statewide traction. Mr Shah's meetings will review booth-level preparedness, identify weak areas from the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, and push for early candidate identification to give the party a longer runway for its 2026 campaign. Party insiders say the Tirunelveli event is designed to energise cadres, particularly in districts where leaders have been pressing for greater organisational backing from Delhi. "There are around 8,000 booths here. In some constituencies, the BJP is as strong as the AIADMK. The Home Minister's visit is aimed at consolidating that base and sending a message of support from the top," a BJP leader said.

Seeman criticises TVK conference
Trichy: NTK chief Seeman on Thursday criticised the TVK conference in Madurai, saying the early arrival of cadres reflected the high level of unemployment among youths in the state. Speaking to reporters at Trichy airport, he said, "The conference may have its objectives, but people gathering there from day one only shows how many youths are unemployed." Seeman also accused the DMK of being selective in opposing the BJP. "They claim to differ with BJP policies, but what have they done for Tamil Nadu? Why didn't they raise these concerns when they were in alliance with the BJP?" he asked. On DMK's stand against the use of Sanskrit terms in Parliament, he said, "You did not oppose it during the Vajpayee regime. Why is it unacceptable now?" He also alleged that the law-and-order situation in the state was deteriorating. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
