Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis shifts to Varsha bungalow

Indian Express30-04-2025

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday moved into Varsha bungalow in Malabar Hills. The decision to move into Varsha, officially designated as CM's bungalow, comes five months after Fadnavis took charge as the CM on December 5, 2024.
'The decision to shift to Varsha bungalow came on an auspicious day, Akshay Tritiya, as per Hindu almanac,' said an official.
In his first term as CM, Fadnavis had occupied Varsha for the entire five-year period—2014 to 2019. Post 2019 Assembly polls, when the undivided Shiv Sena forged an alliance with Congress and NCP, leaving BJP, Fadnavis was relegated to the role of Opposition leader. He had then left Varsha and shifted to Sagar bungalow, thus paving way for then Maha Vikas Aghadi CM Uddhav Thackeray to occupy the bungalow.
However, after MVA was dislodged and Mahayuti came to power during 2022-24, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde stayed in Varsha. Whereas Fadnavis as Deputy CM continued to live in Sagar.
Earlier, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut had alleged Shinde had planted horns of buffaloes sacrificed in Kamakhya in Varsha. Therefore, he alleged that Fadnavis was not shifting to Varsha.
However, Fadnavis had rubbished Raut's charges. The CM said, 'My daughter Divija is in Class X. It was her wish that we should shift to Varsha after her exams. It was just a matter of few months, so why disturb the set-up.'
Whether it was a decision taken mindfully or sheer coincidence, Class X results were announced Wednesday.
Chief Minister's wife Amruta Fadnavis took to social media X to announce, 'Our minds are filled with joy. Our daughter Divija secured 92.6 per cent in Class X.'

38 Arrested Over 'Beef Head' Incident In Assam's Dhubri, CM Vows Strict Action Against Culprits

Last Updated: The trouble began on June 7, a day after Eid al-Adha, when a cow's severed head was discovered in front of a Hanuman temple. In response to the rising communal tensions following reports of desecration of a Hindu temple in Assam's Dhubri district, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the police have arrested 38 people. The police have arrested 38 people in an overnight crackdown after the 'beef head" incident, Sarma said in a post on X. The Assam Chief Minister also issued shoot-at-sight orders in the state's Dhubri district, which borders Bangladesh. During a visit to violence-hit areas, Sarma said the act of throwing a cow's head near a temple should never have occurred and vowed strict action against those responsible. In a post on X, Sharma wrote, 'I visited Dhubri and directed law enforcement officers to follow ZERO tolerance against elements who desecrate our temples, Naamghars and sacred spaces. The incident of throwing beef at the town's Hanuman Mandir should have NEVER happened, and those involved WON'T BE SPARED." He also held a high-level meeting in Dhubri with DGP Harmeet Singh, Additional Chief Secretary Ajay Tiwari, and other senior officials of the state administration. The Chief Minister stated that Dhubri's law and order situation had been deteriorating for over a week. The trouble began on June 7, a day after Eid al-Adha, when a cow's severed head was discovered in front of a Hanuman temple, prompting calls for peace from both Hindu and Muslim communities. Unfortunately, similar incidents, including stone-pelting, recurred the following day. Sarma also revealed that provocative posters were put up a day before Bakrid by an organisation called 'Nabin Bangla,' which expressed intentions to merge Dhubri with Bangladesh. 'Such elements are clearly trying to disrupt peace," the CM said. He said that if required, he would guard the Hanuman Temple for the whole night. 'We cannot allow a section of the community to create such disturbances. Our government will not tolerate this and allow Dhubri to go out of our hands," Sarma asserted. Dhubri District Commissioner Dibakar Nath stated that the situation in Dhubri town is currently under control. 'We've revoked yesterday's order, and shops and markets have reopened," he told PTI. Veerappa Moily writes cautionary letter to CM

Bengaluru: Senior Congress leader Veerappa Moily has written a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, urging swift and measured action in response to a tragic stampede that marred celebrations of RCB IPL-2025 victory. The letter blends praise for the Chief Minister's leadership with pointed recommendations and calls for steps to restore Bengaluru's reputation as a cricketing hub while addressing the incident's fallout. Moily begins by commending Siddaramaiah's tenure, crediting his visionary approach and focus on public welfare for the Congress party's rise to power. He also acknowledges the strategic contributions of Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee. However, the tone shifts to concern as Moily addresses the recent stampede, describing it as a shocking event that has rattled the government, Bengaluru's residents, and cricket fans worldwide. According to the letter, Bengaluru city is long celebrated for producing talented cricketers and hosting vibrant matches. But now, the city faces scrutiny at state, national, and international levels. Moily warns that the incident threatens to undo decades of goodwill and calls for careful administrative measures to prevent further damage. The senior leader notes that Siddaramaiah has already initiated inquiries, including probes by the District Collector, a retired High Court judge, and the CID, alongside disciplinary actions against officials. While these steps show responsiveness, Moily cautions against hasty or overly harsh measures, which could tarnish the government's reputation. Instead, he recommends a single, thorough investigation led by a retired judge to deliver a prompt report and restore confidence among the public and cricket fans. Moily emphasises the need for compassion, urging the Chief Minister to prioritise support for the victims' families and the injured, beyond mere financial compensation. Building trust among those affected is described as a key responsibility for the government, according to Veerappa Moily. Criticising the government's hasty announcement of compensation for victims, Moily stated, 'Providing compensation is not enough; showing compassion to the victims' relatives and the injured, and instilling confidence in them, should be a priority for the government.' He also addresses rumours of relocating future cricket matches, calling them 'unhealthy' and urging assurances to ensure Bengaluru remains a safe venue for sports events. Veerappa Moily suggested, 'Instead of multiple inquiries, a single investigation by a retired judge should be conducted promptly, and a report should be submitted to restore confidence among the public and cricket fans. Creating such a systematic and safe environment is an urgent task that your leadership must undertake swiftly.' In closing, Moily expresses confidence in Siddaramaiah's leadership to act swiftly, balancing the need for government stability with the creation of a safe environment for cricket enthusiasts. His message is clearly about decisive, thoughtful actions to restore Bengaluru's reputation and ensure such tragedies are not repeated. For the Karnataka government, Moily's letter serves as both a call to action and a reminder of the delicate balance between swift response and measured governance. With Bengaluru's cricketing legacy at stake, all eyes are on the Chief Minister to steer the state through this challenging moment.
