The victim, identified only as 40-year-old Luicio N, was participating in the Enrique Estrada 2025 Fair when the balloon caught fire while still on the ground.
According to Riviera Maya News, Luicio helped two passengers escape the burning basket but became entangled in a rope attached to the balloon, which lifted off with him dangling beneath it.
Horrifying footage captured the balloon rising as flames engulfed its lower half, with thick black smoke trailing behind.
As the balloon floated higher, Luicio was seen clinging to a rope below the burning basket before finally falling to his death.
Rodrigo Reyes Mugüerza, secretary general of Zacatecas, confirmed the death and called it 'an unfortunate incident.' He added in a social media statement, 'Immediately, authorities rushed to the scene to provide care and support to the affected people.' Two injured passengers were treated for first-degree burns at a local hospital, according to the New York Post.
Authorities are now investigating the accident. 'We have asked the state attorney general's office to conduct the corresponding investigations to clarify the facts and determine responsibility,' Mugüerza said.
He urged municipal authorities to 'strengthen their verification mechanisms to avoid these types of risks during their activities and festivities.'
Witnesses online praised Luicio for his heroic actions. 'His final act was one of courage and sacrifice. May he rest in peace,' wrote one commenter, while another added, 'Luicio's final act of selflessness... speaks volumes about the strength of the human spirit'.
Though dramatic, fatal hot air balloon accidents are statistically rare. A study cited by Daily Mail from Gitnux notes a mortality rate of less than 0.01% per flight, with only 1–2 accidents per 100,000 journeys.

Karine Jean-Pierre net worth: What to know as ex-WH press secretary announces book on ‘broken' Biden administration
Karine Jean-Pierre, former president Joe Biden's longtime White House press secretary, has announced that she has left the Democratic Party. She also announced that she is writing a tell-all book about the 'broken' administration that she served. Jean-Pierre announced that her new book, titled 'Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines,' will be out on October 21. 'Jean-Pierre didn't come to her decision to be an Independent lightly,' Hachette Book Group said in a promotional release, according to the New York Post. 'She has served two American presidents, [Barack] Obama and Biden … She takes us through the three weeks that led to Biden's abandoning his bid for a second term and the betrayal by the Democratic Party that led to his decision.' 'In a hard-hitting yet hopeful critique, Jean-Pierre defines what it means to be part of the growing percentage of our fractured electorate that is Independent, why it can be worthwhile to carve a political space more loyal to personal beliefs than a party affiliation, and what questions you need to ask yourself to determine where you fit politically,' the tease added. Yahoo Finance reported in May 2022 that Jean-Pierre had an estimated net worth of $1-$2 million. She worked for years in prestigious political and government positions throughout her career. The 2021 Annual Report to Congress on White House Personnel revealed that as the deputy assistant to the president and principal deputy press secretary and senior adviser, her salary was $155,000 per year. She is believed to have gotten a raise after she took over Jen Psaki's assistant to the president and press secretary roles, according to the outlet. Jean-Pierre replaced Psaki as White House press secretary, becoming the first Black person and first openly LGBTQ person to hold the position. Biden said in a statement at the time, 'Karine not only brings the experience, talent and integrity needed for this difficult job, but she will continue to lead the way in communicating about the work of the Biden-Harris Administration on behalf of the American people.'

Jonathan Joss' husband reveals killer's disturbing 5-word comment after shooting, ‘He's laughing, saying…'
The husband of actor Jonathan Joss has opened up about the heartbreaking moment the King of the Hill star was shot, and the killer's disturbing five-word comment after opening fire. Tristan Kern de Gonzales told The Independent that the killer cackled and spewed a gay slur moments after he shot Joss in the head. Joss was fatally shot by a neighbor, who Gonzales said was homophobic, near his San Antonio, Texas, home. 'Everything was really close range. It was in the head,' Gonzales said of the moment Joss was shot by Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez. 'While I'm holding him, [the suspect] has the gun pointed over me, and he's laughing, saying, 'Oh, you love him? Joto,'' Gonzales added. ''Joto' is Spanish for f—t. I never knew the word until I came to Texas, and then I heard it a lot.' Alvarez was arrested just a block away. He has been charged with murder, but police said that the initial investigation found 'no evidence' indicating Joss was attacked because of his 'sexual orientation.' 'We take such allegations very seriously and have thoroughly reviewed all available information. Should any new evidence come to light, we will charge the suspect accordingly,' San Antonio police said in a statement, according to the New York Post. Gonzales previously said on social media that the attack took place shortly after he and Joss found the bones of their dead pet dog displayed on the property, which caused them 'severe emotional distress.' 'We began yelling and crying in response to the pain of what we saw,' Gonzales said. 'While we were doing this a man approached us. He started yelling violent homophobic slurs at us. He then raised a gun from his lap and fired.' 'He was murdered by someone who could not stand the sight of two men loving each other,' he added in the post.
