REAL ID documents held up in mail according to Americans who enrolled before deadline

Fox News06-05-2025

The countdown is on. In just one day, Americans will no longer be able to travel with a standard driver's license as their ID. Instead, they will need a REAL ID, with a gold star showing in the upper right-hand corner.
Travelers will need to show their REAL ID or other forms of acceptable identification on domestic flights starting Wednesday, May 7.
The deadline has sparked panic among many Americans who have been rushing to obtain the new identification before their travels, with some still waiting to receive their REAL IDs in the mail.
Flyers who enrolled for a REAL ID will receive the identification via mail with the times varying by state.
The New York DMV said after passengers apply, they will receive a temporary document and "it takes about 2 weeks for your new Enhanced and REAL ID document to arrive in the mail."
In California, meanwhile, according to their DMV, "it typically takes 2 to 4 weeks to receive a physical REAL ID card in the mail after applying."
In the state of Michigan, the identification should arrive in the mail within two to three weeks, according to its DMV site.
Pennsylvania, for its part, said it will mail out a REAL ID within 15 business days if a person enrolls at a DMV; but if a traveler visits a PennDOT REAL ID Center, the person can "be verified in real time, and your REAL ID will be issued [the] same day."
Daniel Velez, a spokesperson for TSA New England, shared advice with Fox News Digital about what passengers should do if they're still waiting for their REAL IDs.
"Passengers who present a non-compliant state ID along with a state letter or receipt will still be subject to additional screening but should be able to proceed faster than those who only present a state letter or receipt," said Velez.
He added, "We strongly suggest (even if you have a receipt/letter from the DMV) that passengers bring another form of an acceptable ID such as a U.S. passport in order to proceed through security faster."
Velez said that if passengers do not have any acceptable ID, TSA "strongly suggest[s] they arrive to the airport 3 hours prior to their departure time."
"I tried calling, can't reach a person."
Other forms of identification that will be accepted in lieu of a REAL ID include a valid U.S. passport or passport card; DHS trusted traveler cards such as Global Entry; Department of Defense IDs; permanent resident cards; and border crossing cards.
In the "r/AskChicago" forum on Reddit, one person posted a note with the headline, "What to do if REAL ID is lost in mail."
The person wrote, "I went in to get my REAL ID driver's license on April 7, and the tracker on the secretary of state's website says it was mailed out on the 15th, but I still haven't received it. I tried calling, can't reach a person. I tried filling out their online form a few days ago and haven't gotten any sort of response."
The user asked, "I'm wondering if it's taken anyone else this long to get their ID."
Redditors took to the comments section to share their thoughts on the matter.
"It happened to me once. Waited for over a month and nothing showed up in my mail. Went to secretary of state and applied for another replacement, paid the fee," commented a Redditor.
One user said, "Went in for a corrected license on the 16th and just got it today. I noticed mail is running really slow lately."
Another person posted in the "r/Charlotte" forum, asking, "Should I be concerned I have yet to receive my REAL ID in the mail? It's been a month."
"I went on April 2nd. I have the temporary one they printed at the DMV, but I was just wondering how long it's taken others to get theirs in the mail before I spend a lot of time making calls trying to track it down," the person wrote.
Another user commented, "I still can't believe the deadline is really here after what feels like a decade of talks, lol."
"I would be concerned."
Said still another person, "You have a lot more faith in the DMV and USPS to be fast than I do."
One Redditor said, "Thousands of people are going each day. I'm guessing they're just overloaded, tbh. I decided to just use my passport until it dies down. Chaos out there."
"I mean, I expected it to take longer because they are getting slammed now, but I'm a little concerned," commented one person.
Another user added, "I went late last month and got my REAL ID in less than 2 weeks in the mail. My wife went earlier this month and got hers quickly also. So I would be concerned."

No, your Costco card does not count as REAL ID, TSA says

The Transportation Security Administration wants to make something very clear: you can't use your Costco membership card as a form of identification. On June 4, the TSA attempted to dispel rumors on social media that using a Costco card is equivalent to using a REAL ID to get through airport security. According to reports, the rumor has been seen on Reddit posts and blog posts. TSA spokesperson Lorie Dankers said presenting your Costco card to TSA will just lead to delays. "Let me tell you something about that. Whoever wrote that story is recycling old material,' Dankers told SF Gate. "Essentially, what the process they're describing is … let's say you lost your ID and only had a Costco card in your pocket. That would help establish a baseline identity for you. The TSA officer would use that as a starting point to confirm your identity, but they would still have to go through our identity verification process.' Here is the type of ID you're supposed to have at the airport. The REAL ID Act, passed in 2005, sets security standards for issuing sources of identification, such as driver's licenses. Congress passed the REAL ID Act in response to the September 11 attacks. Texas began issuing REAL ID-compliant cards on October 10, 2016. These cards are marked with a gold circle with an inset star located in the upper right-hand corner. If you look at your current Texas driver's license, it should have a gold star at the top-right corner of the ID. Your current Texas driver's license or ID is REAL ID-compliant if it has a gold star in the top right corner. If it doesn't, you'll see the gold star on your next renewal or request a replacement card. If you plan to fly domestically, the deadline to be REAL ID ready was May 7, 2025. On June 4, the TSA shared a post on X, advising people not to attempt to use a Costco membership card of any kind to bypass airport security. A Costco membership card will not count as a REAL ID. According to you can apply for a new REAL ID-compliant Texas driver's license or ID in person at a Texas DPS office. You may be eligible to renew your existing Texas driver's license or ID online. You can still use your current, unexpired Texas driver's license or ID to drive and for non-federal ID purposes. When it's time to renew your driver's license or ID, you'll get a REAL ID-compliant one. REAL IDs work for domestic travel, but can't replace a passport for international flights. Passports are still required for venturing beyond U.S. borders. This article originally appeared on Austin American-Statesman: No, your Costco card does not count as REAL ID, TSA says

Travelers Plan To Spend $4,600 On Vacations This Summer, Up 16% From 2024

This summer, 53% of Americans plan to take leisure summer vacations, up from 48% in 2024, according to a new report from Deloitte. Deloitte conducted two rounds of the survey, one in late March before President Donald Trump's new tariffs were announced, and one in mid-April after the tariffs were set. While plans in some areas remained the same, like how many trips Americans planned to take and how long those trips were going to be, the second round of surveys found that Americans were planning to spend less on their vacations in light of recession fears. Don't Miss: Maker of the $60,000 foldable home has 3 factory buildings, 600+ houses built, and big plans to solve housing — Maximize saving for your retirement and cut down on taxes: . Initially, the annual summer travel budget was expected to grow 21% year over year, to $4,967. In the second round, however, travelers said they only planned to spend $4,606 on vacations, up 13% from last year. Additionally, planned spending on marquee trips, those that are either bucket list items or intended to mark a specific occasion, shrank from $3,987 per trip to $3,417, just a 1% increase from last year. "We still see a strong summer travel season, but perhaps with a more frugal approach," Deloitte's transportation, hospitality and services sector leader, Kate Ferrara, told CNBC, Trending: Invest where it hurts — and help millions heal:. Those surveyed reported that they planned to alter trip length, in-destination spending, lodging type, and airfare class to make their trips more budget-friendly. For example, the average number of trips respondents have planned this summer is 3.1, but quick getaways of three nights or less comprise a large number of those planned vacations. In the same vein, 24% of travelers plan to stay with family or friends while on vacation, and 19% plan to drive to their destinations rather than take a flight. "The root of all of our hacks for saving this summer is flexibility," lead economist at travel site Hopper Hailey Berg told CNBC. Planned travel spending is also not equal across all income levels and generations, Deloitte found. Those who make over $100,000 now account for 49% of vacationers, up from 44% in 2024. Middle-income earners, who make between $50,000 and $100,000 each year, have shrunk from 37% of vacationers to 33%, while those who make under $50,000 have stayed largely the same, declining just 1% from 19% to 18%. Millennials and Gen Xers make up roughly the same share of summer travelers as last year, 29% and 24% respectively, while the number of Gen Zers has increased as boomers begin to slow down, according to the survey. Average American only gets this much time a month to themselves

The average American would pay $2,521 for a day of peace and quiet - while parents would pay $1,147 more. That's according to a new survey of 2,000 Americans (30% of whom are parents), which explored the importance of quality time to recharge and the barriers to getting enough of it. Results showed the average respondent only gets 9.5 hours per month to themselves with the biggest barriers being family obligations (50%), work commitments (32%) and financial constraints (24%). Social obligations (22%) and guilt for finally getting free time (13%) were also listed as reasons respondents don't get the alone time they crave. A little over half of respondents (53%) said they need more alone time than they're currently getting. And the lengths respondents said they'll go to were surprising. Nearly 38% of respondents admit to lying to a partner, friends or family in order to get some time to themselves. The most common lie shared among participants was "I'm not feeling well" (54%), followed by "I have a lot of work to do" (40%), "I have a headache" (33%), "I have an appointment" (33%) and "My phone's about to die, so I can't talk" (32%). The survey, conducted by Talker Research on behalf of Apple Vacations, pinpointed the dollar amount people attribute to certain elements of relaxation and found the average parent polled values a lazy morning to themselves at $325. It's no wonder then that people would be willing to pay an average of $339.8 for just one extra hour of sleep. And the feeling extends to vacations, with 40% of respondents saying they've booked a trip specifically for peace and quiet. "In a world where silence feels like a luxury, it's clear people aren't just craving quiet," said Dana Studebaker, Vice President of Marketing, Consumer Brands, Apple Vacations. "They're willing to invest in it. Everyone deserves moments that are truly their own." How would respondents spend this precious, uninterrupted time alone? One in six said they'd be happy doing anything as long as it wasn't a chore or obligation. And one in eight said they'd want to binge TV or movies (13%) or spend the day at the beach (12%). Interestingly, two-thirds agreed (66%) that visiting family does not count as a restful vacation. "When people are willing to spend hundreds - or even thousands - just for a little peace and quiet, it says a lot about how rare true rest has become," added Michael Lowery, Head of Global Consumer Brands, Apple Vacations. "Sometimes the most valuable thing you can give yourself is time without expectation." Survey methodology: Talker Research surveyed 2,000 Americans (18+ who traveled in the past 12 months); the survey was commissioned by Apple Vacations and administered and conducted online by Talker Research between April 22 - April 28, 2025. We are sourcing from a non-probability frame and the two main sources we use are: Traditional online access panels - where respondents opt-in to take part in online market research for an incentiveProgrammatic - where respondents are online and are given the option to take part in a survey to receive a virtual incentive usually related to the online activity they are engaging in Those who did not fit the specified sample were terminated from the survey. As the survey is fielded, dynamic online sampling is used, adjusting targeting to achieve the quotas specified as part of the sampling plan. Regardless of which sources a respondent came from, they were directed to an Online Survey, where the survey was conducted in English; a link to the questionnaire can be shared upon request. Respondents were awarded points for completing the survey. These points have a small cash-equivalent monetary value. Cells are only reported on for analysis if they have a minimum of 80 respondents, and statistical significance is calculated at the 95% level. Data is not weighted, but quotas and other parameters are put in place to reach the desired sample. Interviews are excluded from the final analysis if they failed quality-checking measures. This includes: Speeders: Respondents who complete the survey in a time that is quicker than one-third of the median length of interview are disqualified as speedersOpen ends: All verbatim responses (full open-ended questions as well as other please specify options) are checked for inappropriate or irrelevant textBots: Captcha is enabled on surveys, which allows the research team to identify and disqualify botsDuplicates: Survey software has "deduping" based on digital fingerprinting, which ensures nobody is allowed to take the survey more than once It is worth noting that this survey was only available to individuals with internet access, and the results may not be generalizable to those without internet access.
